The mshtml.hlp file doesn't actually exist.

You may be able to fix the problem by reinstalling IE7 if that's what you use.

it seems to be related to having OE6 and IE7 and with xp sp2.

this is a work around.
Right-click the embedded image as you normally would, but instead of choosing Save as..., choose Copy. Then open MS Paint, go to the Edit menu and select Paste. That should paste the image into Paint, and then you can save it. (You could probably use any photo program)

Best fix quit using IE and move to firefox problem solved.

I went to a different Microsoft site and, using the Contact Us feature, wrote and reported the problem. I assured them it was a Windows issue, that the problem occurred sometime after I'd done an update, and that I wasn't going to pay for them to correct a problem they created.

Try deleting IE's cache from Tools, Internet Options, click the Delete
Files button under Temporary Internet Files.
Go back to the site where you were saving the 'pics' from and try right
clicking them and choose 'Save Image As'

These were pictures on websites? not in email? this problem is normally in email pictures and it is a pretty old bug, have you done all your IE updates?

As Randy said don't bother trying to find the file because it does not exist, MS knows this and has some articles about it but no fix listed that I have found other than uninstalling IE7.

This was a picture from a website sent in an e-mail. I use OE6. I have IE7 on my computer but never use it except for MS updates. All MS updates are current, including SP3. As I understand what I've read, with SP3 I can no longer uninstall IE7, is this correct? By the way, I do frequent clean-ups of temp files, etc. In fact, had just done maintenance on the computer, including error checking and defrag.

Now here's the strange part. I have exactly the same setup on my newer laptop, also running XP, but do not have this trouble. I just saved both a jpg and a gif from e-mails to check this, and it worked perfectly. Could the sending person's e-mail program affect this in any way, because these were different e-mails. I think I'll forward the one in question to myself and download it onto the laptop and see what happens with it.

yes it seems to be specific to when an email has been forwarded several times and the picture is an embedded picture taken from a website. Which is why I did ask if this was a picture that came to you in an email. That makes much more sense, I thought by the way you said it originally you were on a website trying to save a picture which should not cause that problem.

you can forward the mail to another mail account like gmail or yahoo and you should be able to save the picture from that mail account, it is specific to OE6
And it does appear to be random but seems to be more on pcs that put IE7 on right when it came out rather than those that got a later version.

If you did not specifically uninstall IE7 prior to installing sp3 as the instructions said to then no you can not now uninstall IE7 with out first uninstalling sp3. Had you reverted back to IE6 then done the sp3 install, replaced IE7 then you would be able to uninstall it or repair it. That is why they put out so many warnings about that.
But IE8 is in beta and should be out soon in final. Beta seems to be doing pretty well.

It does make more sense that it came in an email.

Thanks for all the good information, folks. I should have Googled (yeah, I know, it's not a verb) the file name before I did anything else.

By the way, evidently I had uninstalled IE7 prior to installing SP3 (I was one who had the problem with the endless rebooting--HP with AMD processor)and then reinstalled IE7 after SP3. Anyway, I was able to uninstall IE7 and revert to IE6 on that machine.
