Toshiba software updates -- should I?

Our Toshiba Satellite L305 laptop Service Station is sending a pop-up message recommending two updates:

ACPI Flash BIOS version 1.90

Toshiba Service Station

The laptop is working perfectly well just as it is.

Anybody know if I really need to download these updates?

Personally, I would leave them alone (especially the BIOS upgrade). You see too many people on the computer help forums with bad BIOS flashes (upgrades). One of the quickest known ways to turn a functioning laptop into a 7lb doorstop. After doing a bad BIOS flash, your only alternative is to send it in for an original BIOS flash which will cost you about $100. (my policy, "if it aint broke, dont try to fix it")
Service Station:(found this) Service Station is developed by TOSHIBA and is used by 3738 users of Software Informer. The most popular versions of this product among our users are: 1.0 and 1.1. The names of program executable files are ToshibaServiceStation.exe, TSS.exe.

I do not do the bios updates either unless something is happening that I think it might fix. Whether you do it or not is all up to you.

New bios may be in preperation to avoid win7 problems or some know hardware limitation or problems. I usually update bios's. I don't know for sure but Dell 'should' have a simple failsafe install method for it. That realtech driver update is very popular. My 1.5 yr old toshiba - toshiba just offered a dozen or more hardware driver updates, mostly dealing in advance for Win7 updates. Which by the way the amazon's and other big software sellers are offering upgrade pre-orders till July 11th or while supply lasts ... 50% off sale... $50 home premium and $100 dollars pro versions.

I may have discovered a bug in the new software. I was baking last night and selected Surround Bake. I set the temperature to 400Â°F and it showed "Preheating 250Â°F". At this point I changed my mind and hit cancel, opting instead for a Standard Bake at 400Â°F. After selecting standard bake and inputting the temp, it stopped showing "Preheating..." and the oven acted as though it was at full temperature when it wasn't. The bottom element clicked on and off as it would if it had achieved temp. After about 15 minutes of this activity, I opened the oven and thought no way is it 400Â°F. I canceled the Bake mode and selected Surround Convection at 400Â°. Now the oven showed "Preheating 250Â°F" like it did originally, but switching back to Bake again killed the preheat cycle. Going back to Surround Convection, I got the preheat indication again. Switching to Pure Convection the preheat designation disappeared again. There seems to be a problem with the programming logic. Unless you leave it in the initial mode selected fully through the end of preheat, the oven seems to get confused. This could be the reason why some folks have said that the oven is 50-100Â° off, or that things take forever to bake. Does anyone know of a way to "reboot" the computer without running outside the flip the circuit breaker?

I don't know of any software on the market, but you should look into creating the interface he's looking for yourself. The hospital I work at now has an online job database that the HR staff can add, edit and delete jobs from without talking to me. You just create forms like the forum ones and have the information store in a database. The fun part is error checking. Oh yeah... lots of fun. RitaWeeda, You can set Firefox not to automatically install updates. Current versions ... Options \ General, scroll down to Firefox Updates section and select "Check for updates but let you choose to install them" It may be under a different menu structure if you're on an older version. It may still advise that an update is available but won't automatically install it. You can check manually check for updates by clicking on Help / About Firefox. It will check from there if any updates are available, advise you accordingly, and offer to fetch and install. I've been using Firefox since the 0.xx versions.

Thank you for your replies. I did not do either of the updates. This laptop works great and fast and since it ain't broke I don't want to do anything that might break it. :)

You can check what the Bios update fixes before deciding what to do.

Yes you should check what problems the BIOS upgrade fixes and see if that is a specific problem you are encountering. If you do not have the indicated problem, stay away. I have yet to do a BIOS upgrade on any laptop I have had in the last 10 or more years. I am not saying that is right, just that I have yet to do or need one.
