changing from electric to LP range: enough BTUs?

they say that 9,000 BTU burners used to be the standard on gas stoves, and anything over that is more powerful. i'm used to electric burners, so when i compare BTU output in ranges i'm looking to buy (GE, Kenmore, Frigidaire) i don't know what it really means in terms of cooking. is a combination of 18k, 11k, 9k and 5k burners better than one of 16k, 14k, 9.5k and 5k? it gets more confusing when you try to convert it to LP output.

can someone tell me what it's like to boil a big pot of water (6 or 8 quarts) on a 9k or 14k or 18k BTU burner? or stir fry vegetables? again, all i know is electric burners, and i'm satisfied with the speed of boiling, but not much else.

how much is enough. or too much, for typical home cooking? i sautee a lot.... my friend just bought a professional range top and said the high output burner was "scary!"

thank you
