tile in bathrooms - half pro, half DIY?

We just put four new bathrooms in our house. Our contract stipulated tile on floor, and on the walls and ceiling of the shower and tub areas but not the rest of the walls. Now that the shower tiles have been laid down, I realize I really want all the walls tiled 1/2 way up, all around the room in each of the bathrooms. GC says this will be pricey, mostly due to labor (I'm using a very simple white subway tile with no pattern or specialty accent pieces.) So I was thinking...is this something I could consider doing myself? Bear in mind that I've never laid tile and haven't got a clue how to begin. Also, is it a problem that the floor was done first? And...do you have any advice on where to get directions on how to tile bathroom walls? Thanks so much!
