In the midst of kitchen remodel and ordering all new appliances. My husband loves the KitchenAid 30-Inch 5-Burner Double Oven Gas Range

I love the idea of using the smaller oven for our everyday single item cooking. Does it really save a lot of energy? Im confused as to why this stove isnt on the ENERGY STAR list.....

Im confused as to why this stove isnt on the ENERGY STAR list.....Domestic/consumer ranges are not subject to Energy Star rating.

You may want to peruse the link if you haven't done much shopping for cooking appliances for a long time. The overall lack of performance you should be concerned with might surprise you. Hi - We looked at both and went with the Electrolux Icon double set and absolutely love them. We've been in our kitchen since March, so it's not forever, but they've been a dream. Cook really well and I really like the controls. Easy to figure out - and I didn't expect how much I'd like that they fade out when you're not using it so it's a clean front except the clock. The gliding racks are fantastic - don't know who's had problems with them (read one who cleaned the gliders with something which had an affect on them?) But that was one of my KEY decisions. All three racks in both ovens glide - as opposed to the one in the KA Architect II. I asked and you can pay extra to get the gliders for the other racks but if I was spending for a double set, why would I want to pay more! The only feedback I have (and I posted this elsewhere) is that we placed them above the Electrolux warming drawer for a full stack. That makes the controls slightly above my eye height - and I am 5' 11"! I don't use the top rack of the upper at all b/c even though it slides, I have to lift the food up to get it there. Even the mid is a little higher than usual but I'm tall and hubby is 6'2". My advice would just be to put them in a regular double oven cabinet - I would have liked them slightly lower. That said, my 9 yr is a budding chef and even she can reach the controls so it's not that huge of a deal. Pics below - I think you'll be really happy if you go with the Elux Icon set, but best of luck either way! Alexa P.S. Not sure if this is a remodel/new with cabinets or a replacement, but we put a "tray" cabinet in above the oven and it's fantastic.

wekick - that's sounds terrible! What bad luck or maybe just goes to show how things are made and how (little) companies care anymore. I am going to look into disputing the charges, but I may be out of luck since we purchased them in April, but didn't move into the house until the very end of May. I had KA's service guy out today who said that in order for KA to classify it as a lemon it has to have the same problem 3 times in one year. Of course, they are not the same problem, although one may be. He also said that there was a "bulletin" out about one of the issues, meaning that KA was aware of the issue. He said they won't recall unmless it's a safety issue, so I guess they just wait for the oven to konk out then take their sweet time fixing it. He had to order the correct parts so oven will be out of service for over a week. I also went in person to the appliance store...they didnt seem to care much either, but at least had to look like they cared since I was sitting right in front of them. I was putting pressure on them to put pressure on their KA rep to do something, so they are sending out their service manager to take a look, and document. Then I think I'll just keep going in there since I'm local, and they hopefully can't ignore me forever! Ginny20, I am going to try complaining to the big wigs, it can't hurt! One last thing to add, after the ovens were serviced the 1st time, out of the box, having NEVER worked, KA had the NERVE to send me a form letter stating, "How thankful you must be..." that the ovens were under warranty and that I should take this opportunity to extend my warranty. Give me a break! I would be thankful if the hunk of junk worked like it's supposed to! I saved that letter and will probably send a copy of it with me letter to reference how terrible their customer "NON service" is.

Here is my report as promised: I made my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe, and brought a batch of cookie dough balls to the store. The KA demo lady never did show up, so I just experimented on my own. First I turned the oven on regular bake at 350ÃÂº to see if I could hear the fan. The air conditioner fan in the store was very loud, and I could hear no oven fan at all on regular bake. I got impatient waiting for preheat, so turned the oven to convection bake. I could hear the convection fan, but it was very quiet, especially given the air conditioning noise. Convection bake preheat went much faster. Maybe ten to fifteen minutes. I proceeded to cook the two cookie sheets in the oven, on the 2nd and 4th racks. The recipe is normally 375ÃÂº for ten minutes, so I did 350ÃÂº for 9 minutes. I should also say that I used my regular flat, air insulated cookie sheets, which some say not to use with convection, as they keep the bottoms from browning as much as they would with a regular cookie sheet, which is supposedly not necessary with convection. The cookies came out perfectly, rose well, crunchy outside, chewy inside. The cool down fan continued after I turned the oven off. Still very quiet. However, the salesman told me that the demo oven is over four years old and that it was the oven that came out after that which had all the noise complaints. He also said that they had all been corrected in the factory for all new ovens, not by a complete redesign, but by whatever running corrections they are able to do as they go along. So I am still not 100% confident that I have heard the real thing. However, I am going to go ahead and order the oven, as the fan on this one was completely unobjectionable, at least so far as I could tell, and the cookies were excellent. Two other things the salesman suggested: Use the bottom oven preferentially when using only one oven, as it is further from the electronics and will improve the control board life span away from the heat. also, Never use the self clean, no matter what the oven, because the extreme heat is so bad for the electronics. He recommended instead heating a shallow, jelly roll type pan of water with baking soda on the bottom of the oven for an hour at 300ÃÂº, then wiping down the whole with a cloth. Not as effective as self-cleaning, but safer. That's all folks!

Had no idea that ovens arent Energy Star.....

So hoping someone has something positive to say about double ovens/ and convection ovens. Have never owned either....

Convection ovens are great - they provide more even heat than regular ovens for baking. Gas convection ovens are particularly good for roasting meats and poultry - moist heat that keeps the meat juicy on the inside and brown on the outside.

People generally like having two ovens but it's not clear how much room you have in the two ovens on a 30" range.

KA makes great refrigerators and DWs but their ranges and ovens don't get great reviews. You don't have to get all KA appliances - many people mix and match.

FWIW... That range is about $500 cheaper on ajmadison.com with free shipping and no sales tax. Sometimes on KA products it will say it cannot deliver to your area, but I hear if you call them they can.

We looked at this very range this afternoon. Came home and read the reviews and decided to wait awhile. GE is coming out this fall with a new one that looks promising but I will probably wait for reviews on it too before spending that kind of money.

We bought it at Lowes - and the guy that was helping us said he sold the same three Kitchen Aid appliances (fridge/range/dishwasher) to SIX different people just this week. The people he has sold this to in the past had no complaints, and many have come back in to say they were happy. In my opinion, you have to take those online reviews with a grain of salt. If someone has a bad experience, they are going to write a review - but not often will people who are happy write a review at all. The few negative comments didnt sound like major flaws to me. I went and looked at it again today - and yes, the ovens are smallish, but for what I cook - its perfect. We will use the top one more often Im sure. You do have to really bend down to use the bottom oven - but not really an issue for me...... IM happy with my choice.

As far as convection - I know nothing about it and it will definitely be trial and error for me to figure that out. With the oven I have now - it cooks faster and hotter, so Ive learned to make those adjustments. Itll be a new cooking adventure with this new stove. ANd its beautiful to look at as well..... We got an amazing deal at Lowes - the guy took a lot of $ off, plus with the rebate itll put it right about at the online prices we saw. And Lowes inspects it before they deliver it - which is great!

You may be right about the reviews but they still hold some credibility with me. Please let us know how you like it. I'm also looking at Kitchenaid dishwashers so us know about it too. Thanks.

I would agree with 'weissman' that for DW and a fridge, KA is probably as good as you can get. In those areas, Whirlpool Corp. (under any of their brand names) seems to excel. The cooking appliances though, may be another question.

Jenn-Air (Whirlpool Corp.) is pushing so hard to move their ranges that they're giving away the DW. Tempting as that is, I'm not convinced that I want to take a chance on one. I can just see the electronics on the front failing or frying in another year or two.

As far as double oven ranges, a single guy I know purchased a Kenmore Elite (prob mfg. by LG) 30" double oven range and liked it a lot. Said he used the smaller top oven almost exclusively. I haven't found many other friends who have gone that route, though.

And, from my observation, a 30" range just doesn't have the necessary surface area to adequately handle 5 burners. A nice idea, but it seems you'll need to use rather small pots and pans to avoid them all bumping each other.

So ive been searching reviews, consumer reports, various stores, epinions etc etc - and I have to say Ive read a lot more positive reviews than negative on this range.

I bought my Wife this exact range for Christmas. She really likes the small, upper oven. The lower oven, with convection, cooked a perfect turkey for Christmas dinner. We also use the griddle burner quite a bit. We're very happy with our purchase.

Asking ANYONE who has this type of oven.....I am concerned about the bending and lifting from the bottom oven. I am sure the top one will be used the most, but for that gigantic turkey or pot of beef bourguignon --- is it too low, too hard to lift from that height? I have always wanted this kind of oven, but am concerned about usage issues as I get older and weaker!

if this is a new install or a replacement, your contractor/cabinetmaker can help you determine which is the best height of the ovens for your comfort. I'm only 5'1" and have different brand of double ovens, but we measured based on my height plus a little more (I am short,hubby tall) so that it would be positioned at an acceptable level without having to stoop too much! Good luck!
