Cleaning cycle strengthens oven?!

Surely there's some scientific explanation for this that escapes me now (I plead brain fog due to Rx meds) but I'm having trouble understanding something I was told by a rep for a well-respected high end range manufacturer. When I commented that we'd probably not use the self-clean feature due to issues with the enamel of previous ovens flaking, I was told that on the contrary I absolutely should run the cleaning cycle. The rep said that the high heat of the cleaning cycle "strengthens" the metal of the oven cavity. Could someone please explain this in non-technical jargon?
