burned disk will not play on other computer

I am trying to burn some pictures of paintings on CD-RW disk. I have tried the windows Vista program and also Picasa. The disk burns okay, I "close" the session, it comes up on my computer,then when I try to view it on my husbands computer (Windows XP) nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

When I put things on a CD and hit eject, it gives me an option of using only on this PC or on other PCs. I check other.

Try using a CD-R rather than a CD-RW and see if that makes a difference.

DVDs from the rental services have copy protection and can't be ripped without crossing a legal line. You can buy ripping software in the $25-$50 price range that defeats protection, but the use of which is questionable and theoretically limited to making "backup" copies of disks you own and not those you rent. Some prior copy protection beating software providers have been shut down in prior years by legal action. Personally, I'd stay away from it. It's cheaper to buy an external DVD drive. As to your now not working sound, try playing with the Control Panel and keyboard volume controls, it sounds like sometime could have been unknowingly been turned off. Unless the plugin socket broke, the PC mostly doesn't know or care what's plugged in to it.

I think you're wasting your time burning dvds. They're physically unstable, slow, bulky, and prone to failure when inserted into a drive. I just took a quick look on New Egg. A 128 gig Patriot thumb drive (a decent brand) is $48. You can have your pick of 500 gig USB drives (Toshiba, Seagate or WD) for under $60. Get one of one, one of the other, and know that you have plenty of capacity and security for many years into the future. You want another free backup copy? Maybe you've already done this, but if you have more than one PC in the house, put a copy of your stuff on the other one's hard drive. Most people have unused space on their hard drives. Edit to add PS: If you want to join the ranks of the backup paranoid (like me), never have more than one back up copy plugged in or actively being used at the same time. One power surge could take out all copies of the entire collection. Where I live, we almost never have lightning and few real power surges. Still, I don't take any chances. Tell us what, if anything, happens once you insert the CD in the drawer. Is the data written using genealogy program, if so are you running the same software to recognise the data? As kudzu9 notes, you can use Windows Explorer RIGHT click Start click Explore and a new window appears. Look down the left side for your CD player, likely marked as D: click on it to highlight it and now look in the right pane for the contents of the CD. Try double clicking on anything that says 'Application' to the right of the file name.

Sounds like maybe the darker color thing mentioned above may also play into it. My 2001 Grand Cherokee ( factory am/fm/cd/casette player) will not recognize burned CDs. i am currently using my laptop with XP and have tried windows player, I-tunes and BurnerXP but haven't noticed any different results from any of that different software. After going thru about 30 cds burning at different speeds and formats, I finally got it to occasionally recognize one I burnt at around 4X using PCM .wav (uncompressed) format but to recognize and play I usually have to fast forward it thru a couple of songs while it is doing the initial read. Once it recognizes and starts playing then will usually play the whole CD but doesn't always work for whatever reason. I may try the label thing or try to find some of the "dark" cds to see if that matters. We have a 98 KIA witn an aftermarket cd player and it will play just about anything burnt to cd no matter format or speed.

I don't know why I said CD-RW it was a DVD-R. Maybe I should get a CD-R!! Thanks for the suggestions I will keep trying.

XP does not recognise a DVD unless you use third party software. I use the free DeepBurner, liked below. Thee third option is where you want to download from. There are others of course, maybe even better but this program suits me.

Did you "Finalize" the disk?
I know you have to finalize to play in DVD players but for in another computer, I haven't tried to know.

Hmm, ignore my message above. XP does indeed recognise a DVD but you cannot burn them without a third party program.

Try placing the DVD in hubbies computer, RIGHT click Start, click Explore and look down the left side for your DVD player. Click on that to highlight then try double clicking on any file listed in the right column. The picture should then show in the Windows Picture ans Fax Viewer.

You said you used a DVD-R. Have you checked to see if your husband's computer recognizes DVD-R? It could be DVD+R. Some DVD drives will read both, but some are either one or the other.

Yay!! Finally got it to work. I used a CD-R instead of DVD and Picasa program, and it was done in seconds.
