Caesarstone (quartz) for shower surround?

Has anyone seen or used Caesarstone (or Zodiac, or any other quartz solid surface material) for a shower surround?

If so, I'm wondering:

- what was the wall substrate?

- what did you do to waterproof the seams and pan?

- who did you get to fabricate/install it?

- any budgetary estimates (like $/sqft)?

- how did it come out and would you do it again?

My wife and I doing a major "warm modern" rebuild and are considering the "Apple Martini" (green) Caesarstone for a double shower surround.

The final season of Holmes on Homes did one. I believe the episode was called "Blind Faith". The normal countertop guy seemed to be the guy that did it. I believe it was installed over Kerdi. See if you can find the episode online or on TV.

We've installed Caesarstone "pebble" as an accent in our new shower surround. The bulk of the shower is a "marble look" glazed ceramic tile with Carrara marble trim and the grey stone along the top of the shower surround is the Caesarstone. The cost per square foot was the same as if fabricating for a counter top. I believe we paid about $75sqft installed for those pieces. Quite expensive to do an entire shower but nice to use as an accent, shower seat or shelf.

I had a custom shower pan made out of Alantra. It is awesome. It was expensive, but it's is solid, no grout lines, and easy to clean. My walls are tiled. This is solid surface not a cultured product. Plus, I was supporting my local economy. Here is a link that might be useful: Solid surface product

Hi kas4. It's too bad no\-one ever replied to this. We are about to do the very same thing. Using Caesarstone for our tub surround and wanting to put in two niches. Work will be starting very soon and we need to decide. Did you end up with the niches? If so, are you happy with the result? How do you like the quartz for a surround? If you did niches, where the slab opening was cut, did you have slightly rounded corners, or could they cut right angle cuts??

I've been lurking on this site for a while; this is my first post. I'm starting to plan a master bathroom remodel - will be totally gutted. Current shower has 2x2" glossy ceramic tiles - with lots of grout. I'm considering thin porcelain, large-format tiles or slabs for shower and bathroom walls and, possibly, for the vanity tops and tub deck. Would like to hear about your experience with these products - installation, functionality, and durability. I am thinking about the 30"x30"x1/4" field tiles, although they come in 5x10' slabs as well. I called 2 vendors of thin porcelain slabs; both directed me to local tile distributors to get samples (I was hoping to be able order samples over the phone). So far, I've looked at samples of Artistic Tile's Max Fine line, which comes in 3 colors, but can be ordered in custom colors. I was thinking about the "Thassos" white color, but it looks like "whiteboard" to me, so now I'm leaning toward something other than pure white. The calacatta look-alike samples I saw were too small to see the veining and patterning. I was quoted a price of $38 per sq ft, not counting installation.Weight is 2.76 lbs per sq ft. They recommend 2-person installation, even with the 30x30 field tiles. I'm planning to look at Stonepeak's Plane series, as well. They have more color choices.Their website shows an entire bathroom clad in Plane slab.

Swanstone has a shower pan and wall system. Your local manufactured fake marble dealer (Marblelite or the like) will have something similar that is more economical. US Marble and a company that makes a manufactured shower pan called Onyx (not the natural stone of the same name) are also out there with solid surface pans and shower walls. Most or all of these are done with a shower pan that has a lip to accept the wall. Then after the shower pan is in place, either drywall or cement board is installed on your studs and the solid surface shower wall is installed onto that, placed carefully inside the lip of the shower pan, but not resting onto the shower pan. The corners are often caulked and the better companies provide a matching coved corner molding to install. There is a caulked line where the walls and pan meet, and this is the only caulk you ever have to maintain. The shower pan must be installed properly for the system to work and last. Follow the manufacturer's instructions. Some are set into a bed of concrete. You can get various sized niches for shampoos and such, and corner toe rests and even benches.

Check around, many quartz mfg offer their products in a 1cm (actually 1.2cm) specifically for shower surrounds. We have done 100's of them. Also you can find engineered marble products which also work well in shower/tub applications.

Thanks all, sounds like this has been done before with good success. Our general contractor is concerned about the waterproofing part - specifically, who will provide the warranty for it - the quartz installer or someone else who hot mops or otherwise installs the underlying water barrier.

Maybe I can find an installer that can do the whole thing...

Basically for waterproofing for the shower surround your contractor needs to have the shower pan hot mopped, install 2 layers of 15lbs rolled felt, scratch and brown the walls, let dry for 3-4 days and then apply a liquid moisture barrier membrane (LATICRETE - HYDROBAN) over the floated walls and floor. Install the quartz panels and use a color matching silicone for the seams.
