As long as there is a hallway entrance, it isn't really a "private" bath, anyway. You might even make the linen closet 24" to 30" wide and add the leftover width to DD's closet.

Or make the LC shallow AND give DD a shallow drawer area on her side. Put a mirror & lights over the drawers for her own vanity area. I have a deep LC, and find that 30" depth has about 16" of irritating waste space.

If I were a guest in your home staying in that bedroom, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest to walk two steps down the hallway to reach the bathroom. Truth to tell, I would very likely even risk doing it in my "birthday suit" late at night. LOL! That room is tucked well away from the rest of the house's "traffic areas" so the hallway is pretty private anyway. I say, if you want the space for a linen cupboard, go for it.

On the other hand, your daughter or future guests might not be quite as bold as I am. If it is not too late to do a minor amount of reframing, I have a couple of ideas.

1) Just move the door to the bedroom down so that most of the hallway becomes part of the bedroom. Like this...

2) Add another doorway (I'd recommend a double-swinging door...maybe with smoked glass panels in it) to make the hallway outside the bathroom into semi-private space? Like this....

In our home, we find that guests need to "powder their noses" more often than the owner of a bedroom, and certainly more than a temporary over-night visitor. So, I would use either bevangel's 2nd layout or just have your occupant walk the three stinkin' steps. If it were my choice, they'd walk. People don't walk enough these days, anyway. :)

Is this a great forum or what! I like the secondary door to close off the hallway -- especially like the french door look (solid, not glass).

Yes!! I love this place!! However, I must say I get far less laundry done now! :o)

I will show hubby bevangel's plans and see what he thinks. Problem with closing that off some though is that DD will be using that door a billion times a day. Hmmm, certainly food for thought.

Oh, I'd just leave the french doors open against the wall unless you have guests who want more privacy.

Some good ideas here! The only "con" I can see to moving the door down the hallway is that then the only "powder room" downstairs would be inside your DD's room...unless you are planning on having guests come through your bedroom to use yours, they would no longer have an entry into bathroom without going into someone's bedroom. I'm with the others on linen closet taking precedence though!

Now MY idea ;~) is that I'd do almost anything to move the entry door from the garage out of the laundry room. Having lived with it both ways I absolutely love being able to close the laundry room off sometimes and not having to walk past piles or baskets of laundry coming into the house. Look at how the door in from the garage and the door from laundry room to house interfere with each other...at the very least I would put a pocket door on the laundry room instead....but I'd also play with arrangements of the laundry room and the coat closet and think about having the door from the garage go directly into the house!

OK, I will be contrary and vote to keep it as is. Why? Because your DD will LOVE it, she will like it MUCH better, I absolutely guarantee it. Just ask her.

Having a personal door makes that her bathroom, her suite, her private space. I have three girls--16, almost 10 and 9, that is what they all want. I see you already have a spare closet in the hallway, you could store linens there if you really need to, extend it a little if you need more space. DD's xtra sheets and towels can go on the shelf in her closet.

If she moves out of the room, you can always close off the door and put in a closet.

How big is the vanity? You would be surprised how much girl stuff you can usably pack into a small 18 or 21 inch vanity.

I just have to weigh in here on the side of hadley. As a teenager, my bedroom was immediately outside the bathroom. All I had to do was walk out of my bedroom door and take two steps into the bathroom. Was that good enough? No! I dreamed of having my own private bath. I agree with hadley that DD will love it. Find someplace else for the linens. OR, if you cannot give up the linen closet, I vote for option #2 above. (my personal choice would be a regular door as opposed to the swinging door)

But it doesn't... that is the bath used by all guests!

True, and so that's what makes it really interesting. Reality and perception are not always the same. In other words, things aren't always what they are--or they are, but they are also something different. The private door, even if there is also a public door, will make the bathroom feel more like her space--which others may occasionally use. :)

Actually, this is true in our current home for the "master bath." There is a "public" door on the hall and a "private" door from our closet/dressing area. For a long time, that closet area was stuffed with well, stuff, and we didn't use it. Once that was cleared out and usable, suddenly the whole space felt like "mine" in a way it never had before. So even adults can be susceptible to this kind of double reality.

I vote fo the master bedroom because it sounds like what you really want. You can always change it later if you need to, but there are lots of bathroom storage options out there so bet that you find more ways to add storage to your bathroom too (separate toilet paper holders, built in medicine cabinets, cabinets for towels that can be mounted over the toilet (and you can even make them deeper by recessing them between the studs), etc.). We have a bathroom that has a small vanity like the one you will have. I had assumed that a vanity like that could only be doors with shelves inside (and then not many shelves because of the plumbing for the sink. It turns out that you can get vanities that size that are half shelves behind a door (and all the plumbing is on that half) and half drawers--I got one and it is great. Good luck.

I like the idea of putting the added door further down the hall and just leaving it open during the day when DD is not there. Here's an added suggestion - utilize the stud space at the back of the closet and have a recessed shallow cab put in that extends a couple of inches into the room. It would give you enough room for rolled towels, toilet tissue, shallow drawers and perhaps some shallow rattan baskets. Instead of cupboard doors at makeup height you could utilize a rolling door (like a breadbox) and have a makeup shelf/mirror behind it. That way her personal items could be kept there so that when guests come you can be comfortable not having them scattered around.
