Master Closet/Utility tie in - Laundry hamper
Comments (11)Although the idea of a full door between the closet and Utility is intriguing, I don't think I want to give up all the space in my Master Closet for that door. I think the hole-in-the-wall chute on the Master Closet side would allow our trim guy to still build in shelving above and below that chute. On the utility side, I will need a way to retrieve the clothes - probably cabinet doors. I was thinking if the entire hamper on the Utility side is no taller than 40", then we can still have shelving in that little utility closet to store cleaning supplies, lightbulbs, etc. We will still have a full height closet on the other side of the mud bench for storing vacuums and brooms. I'll be talking to the GC soon. I'm so glad my sister thought of this, and y'all agree that it's a good idea! Thanks!!...See MoreMaster Closet vs. Laundry Room: That Last 18"...
Comments (5)What are the dimensions of the proposed laundry room? Are you consulting professional designers? (I ask because of your question about doing an island in the master closet which is clearly not wide enough to accommodate an island. At least 11 feet in width is the rule of thumb for doing a small island in a kitchen. Hanging space requires almost as much room as base cabinets require. I.e., 24" is the minimum closet depth vs. base cabinets that are 24" deep + 1.5-2.0" countertop overhang.) How much free space will you have in front of the washer & dryer? 48" is the usually recommended amount of space that is needed to comfortably work in the space. How wide is the door opening? Wide enough to easily get through with loaded baskets of laundry? To move the machines into the rooms. Is there enough space for almost inevitable repairs to be made? I'll echo what others have said; the master closet is large. IMO, a house that has a 'Master Closet' the size of a small bedroom should have more than a cubbyhole for a laundry. Better to have as much info as you can get ahead of a project rather than have regrets after it is done....See MoreLaundry, Master bath, and Master closet renovation - Input requested
Comments (4)I'm with Enduring in that I would prefer the space given to the closet instead of the toilet. In the last house, the toilet in the master was crammed into a tiny space shared with a tub/shower combo. Really, really disliked the space. Would traipse down the hall and use the other toilet. (I used the shower in the master only one time in all of the seven years that we lived in that house.) Also, I would not put a tub in but that may be just me. (The house already has one tub.) I would much rather clean a shower once every six weeks or so (we squeegee after a shower) than have to clean the tub (bent over and on your knees) every single time it is used. Tubs use a lot of water vs the lo-flo shower heads. But, if you love tub baths and routinely use a tub to bathe, that's another story and you'll want to include it in the remodel. (If you're thinking a cast iron tub, the floor framing will probably need to be beefed up.) Not a huge deal since the ceiling below will likely be torn out anyway for the plbg. changes. The other thing I see as a problem is the door opening directly in front of the vanity. That is going to be a pain if this is a shared bath and someone else is standing in front of the vanity....See MoreLaundry in Master Closet and Three Seasons Room Design Help
Comments (38)shead - I sort wash loads into 4 categories: whites, lights, darks, jeans. On very few days would I want to put everything I'm wearing into the same load. And obviously, lives are different. DH works on a farm. All of his work clothes (which can amount to more than a load per day in the winter when he wears multiple layers) can all be washed together. It will be FAR more convenient to wash his clothes in the master closet and put immediately away than lugging them to the other side of the house and back again to put away. 90% of my things can be washed together as well....See Morebeaglesdoitbetter1
