If the new map is using 1940-1970 data at all, it will again place most of us in zones that are colder than what current reality tells us. Maybe. There have been two official USDA zone maps published. The first was put out @1970, and used roughly that data set. The second, still currently official one, came out @1990 or a bit earliest (it's hard to tell since the USDA does not copyright material so these do not have useful copyright dates) It used data from a shorter time span, and seems to have been done in response to a cooling climate, so many places were colder than described on the first map. For example, on the first map, the far southeastern corner of Pennsylvania, around Philadelphia, was zone 7. On the second map is was changed to zone 6. The first map had a long, very narrow tongue of zone 6 following up the Hudson River almost to Albany. The second map gets rid of it. Now we are being threatened with a third map that wants to move the zone lines about as far north of the first map lines as the second map moved them south. The reality seems to be that there are a number of people, who, whether they realize it or not, never agreed with the second map. At least in areas that I'm familiar with, there seems to be a detectable pattern that people who were moved down a zone in the second map, agree with being moved back up a zone to where they originally had been, but people who were in the same zone in the first two maps, but moved up a zone in the third one think the third one is crazy. The last time this discussion came up, I spent a lot of time looking for a copy of the first map online, without success. A lot of gardening books from the 1970's include it. The biggest noticable difference is the lack of a and b subzones. However, older books may have a copy of the Arnold Arboretum map. It's similar in concept, but uses different temperature ranges to define the zones.

I am in the printing business and produce lots of catalogs each year. TriangleJohn is correct, the catalog has to be saved in a version that a printer can use. MS Publisher can be used, but at times can be a nightmare to output negatives from. It may end up costing you more to sort out the problems than to hire a good graphics person. If it's going to be straight copy like a price list without any photos, then an MS Word document would be fine. Just print out a laser copy of the sheet and have the printer shoot a negative with his camera. But if it involves multiple colors and photos, it's a whole different story. The best softwares to use would be Quark Express, In Design or Pagemaker. There are others that will work, but these three are the most readily accepted. And yes we are more and more accepting high resolution PDF files. But as stated earlier, it has to be saved using a better version of Adobe Acrobat, not what is normally packaged with your computer. I would suggest that you contact several graphic designers in your area and meet with them. Find out what their initial cost will be as well as what their changes will cost. From my experience, you could end up paying almost as much for your changes as you do to setup the initial catalog if you are disorganized and unsure of what will go into it. If you are on a tight budget, spend some time laying the catalog out before you give it to the graphic designer. For example you could put all of your seed on one page, fertilizer on another and handtools on still another page. Then once you feel good about it, hand it over to be typeset. Then it's just a matter of proof reading for typos and content. Once the catalog is finished, you can e-mail the file to any printer you choose. Don't be mislead by the graphic designer that only the printer he uses can produce the job properly. If that's the case, then you don't need to deal with a designer that is so limited. He is just looking for a slice of the printing pie. Remember, you want the file to be usable by any quality printer. Lastly, your initial setup costs will be high the first year. But each following year should be very low if you stay with the same theme, but just make minor changes like pricing. Good luck! I would be happy to discuss this further with you if needed.

I think that our old kitchen was very 1970's. It was built around 1975 in a large custom MCM house - very California suburban - one story, lots of windows. This was meant to be fairly upscale. It had some features very popular on Gardenweb. The layout was nearly perfect for us. The lower cabinets are mostly drawers. There is a small prep sink on the corner of the island. Note the yellow sink that matches the awful artistically bumpy tile with awful grey-brown wide grout. They liked colored plumbing fixtures: one bathroom had robins egg blue sinks, one had avocado green sink and toilet. The cabinet in the corner next to the sink had one of those general purpose motor bases with the cabinet to hold the attachments (blender, mixer, etc). The faucet and hot water dispenser were changes that we put in - the original faucet was plain with a separate sprayer: The upscale features of the time were the biggest problems of the kitchen. The wall ovens were a bleeding-edge-of-technology Thermadore. The upper oven was suppose to be a combination microwave and conventional (predecessor to today's speed ovens). The microwave function was broken when we moved in. We had it repaired and it worked twice before blowing out again. It turned out that my sister had the same model and repaired it twice with the same experience so we used it just as conventional. The clock failed 2 or 3 times during 20 years and the self clean requires it to work. The early flat ceramic cooktop had three thermostatically controlled burners that would only work with a perfectly flat bottomed pot (and not that great even with that) and one high heat burner that would work with more pots but wouldn't go to a simmer. Any temperature adjustments took forever to take effect.
