Suggestions for 30" gas cooktop & island hood

I have a 30" gas cooktop with downdraft vent on an island that needs to be replaced. I was originally going to replace with the same set-up (downdraft vent) so I didn't have to redo the ventilation but after researching I am considering making the switch to a vent hood. My budget for both items is $2,000. I only need 4 burners. My #1 priority for the cooktop is quality construction - knobs that hold up, grates that don't chip, a nice stainless steel surface. I would like a variety of burners, but I don't need super high BTUs. I do boil water a lot, but the configuration with the high btu burner in the front is not appealing - I always put the big pot on the back burner. We cook every day, but don't do much gourmet cooking. I'd love suggestions for cooktops that meet these requirements and for hoods that will go with. In particular, I'd like to know what size hood is needed for a 30" island cooktop.Lot's of info, I know, but wanted to give you all something to work with. Thanks

For a quality stainless steel 4 to 5 burner cooktop with at least one high btu in rear, I'd look at Dacor. I had a 36" Dacor SS cooktop with sealed burners and nice grates that looked almost as good on it's way out the door as it did coming in twelve years earlier (bought new range instead). And it had high btu rear burner. Dacor is known for a nice, lasting, easy to clean up stainless finish.

Thanks. Anybody have suggestions for a good island hood that would go with the dacor distinctive, which is I think 54,000 BTUs?

Agree with Deeageaux and disagree with Aprince about venting for a rangetop vs. cooktop. Venting requirements are a function of the btu's of the specific appliance, not whether the appliance is a cooktop or a rangetop. For example, the Dacor rangetop I linked above has less total btu's than the Wolf cooktop that the OP was initially writing about. The rough rule of thumb for sizing the cfm's of a hood to the btu's of a cooktop/rangetop is 10cfm's per 1000btu's of burner capacity. So, if you have four burners of 15,000 btu's each, equals 60,000, means you'll need 600 cfms (yours likely won't be as much as 60,000 btu's). Some people say you can go less cfm's, because the calculation assumes all 4 burners going at once. The counter to that argument is that a hood with extra capacity will be quieter to operate when you mostly need its lower setting. Furthermore, on those occasions when you DO need all 600 cfms (frying fish for example), you will be glad to have all that capacity. To the OP, I would avoid a downdraft vent unless you absolutely have to. They are not a good use of your money. You may as well open a window. Downdraft vents work against the principles of physics - i.e. that smoke and grease ascend upward. The downdraft will also pull on the flame of your back burners. You are much better off with a proper overhead hood, which will efficiently pull up the smoke and grease. Why do you want a downdraft? How can we talk you out of it? I would rather spend my money on a rangetop that maybe is not a Wolf so as not to pay so much for the rangetop, and then spend the money on a proper hood. That's just my $.02.

I will probably never be using all the burners at the same time -- most likely, two at a time. I am in love with the Zephyr Tamburo hood which only has 400 CFM and am very tempted to just go with that one. Thanks for the formula, tanman - I'll see if I can figure whether the 400 will do it. Then, of course, there is the oven...how do you figure that one?

I found that the size played a bigger role in aesthetics than I thought. In a very large kitchen, a 30 inch range may look underwhelming but you may be able to compensate for that visually to give it more presence. My kitchen has a very long wall. I had initially been leaning towards a 36 in induction cooktop with wall ovens placed elsewhere. Because of the proportions of the room, and some other considerations I went with a 48 inch midnight blue Aga Elise induction to be surrounded by white cabinetry and a blue island. Once the range went in, it still looked too small for the space so I had the cabinets on either side painted in the same navy blue to give it more presence. You are wise to consider the overall proportions of the room. And yes, aesthetics do matter.

Most manufacturers have moved to separate pop up downdrafts, as a separate purchased piece, installed behind the cooktop. They don’t work much better, because science just doesn’t allow that, and they cost a lot more, because capitalism, and they take up a lot more room, because they aren’t combo units. But they exist. Remodels aren’t done very often. Plan this better. Get a more functional layout.

What compromises are you willing to make? Is your budget for each item 2K per item, or is it 2K for both combined? What size vent pipe are you planning to install?

The problem is that your budget is low for what you are asking about as a combo, even if your budget is 4K. Compromises will have to be made. A lower BTU cooktop coupled with a lower CFM fan that uses a only 6" vent can probably be found on your budget if you're willing to go Chinese on the hood and aren't that concerned about noise. (Looks not cooks compromise) Or, you could do the high BTU cooktop and compromise on a wimpy (but still expensive) vent above. (Cooks, but adds CLEANING a lot more as a compromise. Not recommended in my book.) But, to get both a high BTU cooktop and an effective island hood above it with the larger coverage, CFM and vent pipe, well, that will require a larger budget. (Cooks and looks)

And we haven't even discussed the labor costs for installation.

Or, you could explore moving the cooktop to a perimeter location. It's a lot cheaper for ventilation, and you get better quality ventilation because the wall helps to contain some of the cooking products and funnel them into the hood. Therefore, you can choose less CFM for a wall hood setup than an island hood setup.

So, yes, for $2k I'm hoping to buy a cooktop and hood. I know that the ventilation labor is going to be an additional cost. I really can't move my cooktop off the island without remodeling a big portion of the kitchen (there is not a good counter space where I could fit it and have a workable zone around it), and that isn't in the budget. I was also looking at Dacor Classic and KA because they have the burner configuration I am looking for. If I select a cooktop that is under 45,000 BTU, can I find a hood that cooks and looks and stay in budget?

Well, the matching Dacor range hood has a 600 CFM fan and uses an 8" duct with baffle filters. That's the absolute minimum capabilities that I'd see using there. If you need additional appliances, you may be able to get a retailer to give you a package deal.
