Need help with over the tub window choices

We're building a house and our master bath faces the neighbor's house. We just found out that it will line up pretty much directly with their bedroom window, 10 feet away (our homes are very close together). It's a 6 foot x 4 foot window, and we don't really want to worry about keeping blinds/shutters on it all the time. So we need to figure out how to get a window that allows a lot of light in, but protects privacy. So far, the options I've come up with are: 1)Glass Block, 2)Leaded Glass insert 3)Regular window with obscure glass panes. I feel like the glass block is a little dated, not sure I'd really like the leaded glass insert on a big window over my tub, and haven't ever seen a regular window with obscured or frosted glass, so not even sure what that would look like. Any thoughts on this?? Would love to see pictures of solutions people have come up with for this situation.

How about option #4? Eliminate the window. If it doesn't give you a good view, then you don't need it. Put in a skylight instead. That will give you daylight without the worry of being "revealed".

That's a huge window in a bathroom that close to a neighbor's house.

I like live wire oak's suggestion, or maybe there's something else you could do, like windows in sort of a transom position, up towards the ceiling. I understand the desire for lots of light in a bathroom, but if I were that close to my neighbor's house, I wouldn't really feel "comfy" in the bathroom even with a frosted or obscure glass without a window covering down. And that's coming from a person who has hardly any window treatments because I don't really care who sees what. Except in the bathroom, that's where I draw the line.

Look at the interior length -- not just the overall exterior length. You may not need the 72" and may be able to gain some shelf space for towels or bath stuff. You may also need room for the pump, faucet or other plumbing concerns. Take those into account, and if you still have and want to use the extra length, google air tub with 32" width. I found some hits, including MNTI and Hydro Systems. If you decide you can give up the air feature, the Victoria & Albert Toulouse is a freestanding soaking tub that fits your size requirements and I thought was very comfy.

Now this is more like it: It's freestanding (though I don't care for this particular surround) and the backrest is what I find the ideal shape for two people side by side, with good back and shoulder support for both. Most tubs with this shape are like 5 feet wide which is not what I want; this one is just wide enough for two. The taper at the other end helps preserve water without getting too crowded, but is still wide and sloped enough to lean against when you want to face opposite directions. Still, it's the side by side configuration I like best. Two-person tubs where you face each other look great in pictures and in the showroom. Then you use one in real life only to find you have to SCREAM AT EACH OTHER to be heard over the roar of the jets. Although air jets may be a bit quieter than the water jets I've used. I could do without the huge ledge at the end of this tub though - what's that all about? I too can't find a tub that gets everything right.

To all responders - many thanks for the comments and suggestions. Was able to open access door at plumbing end of tub and was able to see steel mesh and clumps of plaster below tub rim on exterior wall but no sign of studs - so I assume that plaster with mesh support is also behind wall tiles. This would explain erratic readings with stud finder. Exterior wall is brick - not sure if stud finder will give reliable readings through brick but will give it a try. If so will give me some general idea where studs might be.

I know this is an old thread. I'm comtemplating if I want a tub at all but if I get an air or a jetted tub, if the sides have stone around, how do you reach the motor if you need a repair? Just curious if anyone has dealt with that situation. For my current outdated tub, I can reach the motor through the the cabinet; I have a cut out there. I could do the same thing. But adding a slab of quartz to a tub make for a very expensive tub. Dominique, what did you decide and are you happy with your decision?

I love having a window in the bathroom whether there is a view or not. Depending on the window style and the angle of the neighbor's window, you might be able to put obscured glass on the lower portion only (like with a double hung, or a casement with separated panes). I did that in my downstairs bath because folks walking up to the front door could look right in at the toilet. It was the perfect solution. I can still see the outside/sky/trees, but no one can see in through the bottom pane.

Mine is similar to the first window on this page.

I have a large window at my tub area w/transoms. Houses are close also, I plan to use blinds that can be used in the lower portion only. You can't really see in on the upper part of my windows, so I don't want to cover that area. I love lots of light !

jeannie01: What type of blinds are you putting into your bathroom? .... I have the same dilemma. I don't want to put obscure glass in the window but I also don't want to provide a show to neighbors and/or folks in the yard.
