Checking out my Internet speed

At midnight tonight my ISP will be upgrading the DSL to a higher speed. I want to see what I have now and then check again tomorrow.

I don't remember where to look to find that.

Yes high speed is wonderful. I got UVerse and had it crash on me and lost my high speed for several days, it was awful. Dialup was archaic and if I saw a picture I liked somewhere, I couldn't even save it. I always save hybridizers pictures until I have my own. I have Dr Jerrold C and it is different colors, depending on the weather. It is never red though like the hybridizers pic. More like a soft pink, with a kinda green edge. We have DSL and I HATE IT! Half the time it isn't working right, takes forever to load, fails to respond, etc etc etc. We have had the AT&T serviceman out here multiple times and when he leaves, it works fine--for a week or so, then it's back to its old tricks and we have to call again. And everytime it storms, it goes out. When our contract is up, we are thinking about getting a Galaxy tablet computer that we can take anywhere, and also acts as a wifi hotspot so you can still get internet on your PC. Both of my brother and sister-in-laws each have one and they love it. We'll get rid of our land line phone and DSL line, we don't really need a land line anyway as we both have cell phones and nobody calls on it anyway except political calls and sales calls. The more I think about it the better I like the idea. PC's are on their way out anyway, before we know it they will be as obsolete as 8-track tape players, lol!

If the picture is scrambled you probably have a trap on your line that blocks the TV signal. I've had Comcast internet in several locations and they have done this to me once. Sometimes the installer puts it on, sometimes they don't. Short of removing the trap if you have access to the outside box, which is very risky there isn't anything you can do. Even an illegal box as someone mentioned won't help as that whole frequency range is filtered out. The best way around this is to subscribe to their basic cable. Internet is $10 more a month if you don't subscibe to cable TV as well and the basic cable is $10 so its a wash. This will give you locals and a few more, but thats it because they can also put a trap on the line for this that will filter the expanded basic channels. In my case they didn't put the trap on so I get channels 2-99 and from what I hear its a well known secret that they rarely do.

Hi again mush, I've used both Yahoo! and gmail for email - both very useful - and free. Son was just checking what options may be available for me rather than dial-up - heck, I'm 82: time's getting shorter. I haven't got time to twiddle my thumbs waiting for dial-up to load! It seems that at about 20 km. from the city, 13 from a village, and about 5 from a switch, I think, I'm too far out to get high-speed service over wire. So we were told the other day when he went searching for an ISP on www.canadaisp.com? ca? I think was the address: got at least a couple of dozen potential providers. Our rural municipality has arranged for increased speed for much of the area via 15 towers, one of them about 12 miles away, but it needs line-of-sight ... and that would require more or less going through old uncle's barn ... or putting an antenna on its roof, or on the silo. We're going to see whether I might be able to do that, and send signal over the air to the house, about 300 feet away. There's another tower in another county that may be closer, but I haven't been able to find from a neighbour using it how the system works through that. Another guy who lives near me gets a signal from a nearby grain elevator, operated by a telephone company, that gives him fast download of print and small graphics, but not of material in motion and some of the included ads have that, so if one has limited download capacity, it might get eaten up more quickly than one expected, were one not able to get rid of them. ole joyful

So I wonder if they made the upgrade, given that your download speed has decreased since yesterday. They aren't charging you for this new 'faster'(?!?) speed, are they?

If you read the agreement carefully, you'll see terms like "peak speeds" and "no guarantee" and on and on

In other words, the upgrade can be an upgrade collectively (for all users) and still be a downgrade for you.

zep that is the comcast that I was given when I moved to the new house, I think it said it could go up to 16 on download, nice speed and I am only paying $20 a month so no complaints.
I was so used to my Fios I was afraid I would hate anything else but so far so good.

In regards to the DSL upgrade issue sometimes when they do those upgrades it takes a while for everyone to see any improvements, and sometimes they don't put the upgrade on everyone sometimes you have to call and ask them why you are not seeing any improvement> especially if there was any price increase. Since it is DSL it will certainly depend on the CO you are closest to and how it is configured and how far you are from it.
You might want to check over on BBR forums for your ISP forum and see what is being said. They have forums for all the various ISPs.
