Rule of thumb on when to use registry cleaners

If you understand the registry well enough that you know to make a backup first and are comfortable in making changes, don't use a registry cleaner because you don't need it and using it will only cause you headaches.

If you don't understand the registry well enough to make a backup first and/or are not comfortable in making changes, don't use a registry cleaner because you don't need it and using it will only cause you headaches.

Hmm, my lawn seemed to have progressed quite rapidly past 2 days. The only reason I'm asking about core aerating is because I noticed one spot where I used to have a small tree before moving it to a different spot last year and it's the greenest spot. My guess too much grass or runners overlapping each other contributed to significant winter kill. Considering that Floratam and Sapphire are very aggressive grower, I'll have to cut back on fertilizing not to produce excessive growth. The area that are most trampled on are greening up the fastest as well. It was completely brown, you'd think I had total winter kill. I may end up going with Biozome instead of core aerating. How will I get to home from rental place (no truck)? It's heavy as heck . It doesn't seem to work too good if the ground is too dry. Must be right amount of moisture to maximize coring depth. It hasn't rained much in a while and the ground is starting to get dry. Last thing I want to do is water during the spring when it's supposed to be wettest period of the year.

your success will also depend on the trees you choose ... since you have dreams of gardening UNDER your trees .... you must be VERY CAREFUL about choosing trees that will allow such ... many trees are shallow rooted and super competitors.. and will choke out just about everything you try to plant under/near them ... e.g. .... you say you want a veggie garden ... which requires full sun [so you cant do 50 trees on one acre] .... and large amounts of water and fertilizer ... IF you were to plant a maple within 25 feet of that space.. the maple will grow its roots into the area.. steal all the water and food .... and then grow so fast.. that within a decade.. your veggie garden will be in full shade ... and will no longer be a veggie garden ... so... choosing the right trees is MOST LIKELY more important than spacing .. good luck ken

Thanks Dave and Malna, I had chosen Pomona last year as it didn't need sugar to gel, it was still natural, and I could also use other sweeteners like maple syrup (I'm a vermonter) and honey. And the reviews seemed pretty favorable. I didn't get a chance to work with it since I was a little stumped as to how to convert a sugared recipe into a pectin using recipe. Sounds like I need to do more research this year. I had explored the Pomona site last summer and didn't come up with an answer, so I'll get back up there. Dave, is there a particular brand of low/no sugar pectin you would recommend for recipes with alternative sweeteners? I took a very quick look on the Ball site and tried their tool for choosing a pectin, but it only gives fruit as the options and we make a lot of onion and tomato jams. Yum... Many thanks again, Anne

Ed Bott who is a windows expert and a former editor of PC World has a great blog I often read. He some time back blogged about this subject, it is a very informative read as well as the comments area following it. I will provide a link. I know a lot of people that use various cleaner programs, and really it is a what works for one does not always work for someone else situation with them. Each person has different experience just as each user has different pc usage. The main reason for the caution in my post was simply to warn those that are not familiar with these products to know that there are situations that can occur that could really be unfortunate. Plus there are those companies out there that prey on novice users and put out junk products(all kinds of products). I think the greatest thing is when a person takes it upon themselves to educate and seek info and research deeply before taking on any kind of task! That is the real way to learn. Do your research and read all the pros and cons then you can make an informed decision. YES acting smart is definitely not being smart.... being smart is being informed and proceeding with caution (after major backups)! LOL Here is a link that might be useful: Ed's blog

It's just that it seems like there have been a lot of threads lately that start with something like "I was having a minor problem, so I used this registry cleaner and now . . . "

I remember a long time ago, when Windows first started using the registry, there were some good cleaners available (including one from MS). But as the registry started getting more complex, the registry cleaners started having more trouble and making more errors. At some point, MS pulled the one they used to offer and recommended against using a registry cleaner. I used to think it was a good idea to use a registry cleaner periodically, but I haven't used one in many years because of problems that they causes.

back in the old versions of windows like 98 and earlier sometimes using a registry cleaner was needed however in the newer versions from xp forward it is not needed and is advised against. Unfortunately those that try to sell registry cleaners use the scare tactics and sensationalism method to try to get people to use their products and it works a lot of the time. then people wonder what happened to their computer.

When the people that I consider the guru's say steadfastly do not use them that is enough for me. And I can proudly say I have never used one.

Agree, agree, agree.

Some cleaners are more reliable than others, but still common sense must be used. Anyone who has read my posts through all these years will recall only in few exceptions do I recommend registry cleaners and it comes with a disclaimer.

Oh by the way as we speak of the registry, I just worked on a system to remove Word 2007. The user's on-board uninstaller would not complete the process. Fortunately with the installation of REVO and Safe Mode I was able to remove the application. During the process REVO located and reported over 21,000 registry entries for the suite.
