Paypal email question

Occasionally I get an email from paypal regarding my account. I opened an account years ago but haven't used it and tried to cancel it years ago. I thought it was cancelled. I don't know if it still exists.

These emails state that there are security issues with my account and to update my account info.

How the heck do I know if this is real or not? I'm not sure if they still have my credit card info.

Does anyone know a way to contact them without giving out my personal credit card info? I don't know if its legit.

The email addy they sent that message to, must be the one set up with paypal.

You can go HERE and try to log in with that email addy. If you don't remember the password, you can just check the box and go from there.

Paypal will never ever send you an email asking you to update your account and request any info. It is likely a phishing scam looking for your personal info. Those phishing scams even look like it is from the real people.

I've never sold anything on eBay - I'm strictly a buyer. And, I've been buying on eBay since the Summer of 2001. I signed up for a PayPal account pretty much right away. At that time, you could sign up with just a credit card, but there was a $1,000 limit on how much you could purchase. That's a combined amount from all purchases. Once you hit the $1,000, you had to attach your checking account. To verify the account was yours, PayPal would make three small (anywhere from one cent to $1) deposits to the account. Once all three showed up in your account (they wouldn't be on the same day), you had to go into your PayPal account and enter the dates and amounts of the deposits. The money, such as it was, was yours to keep. I know that PayPal subsequently raised the credit card purchase limit to $1,200 before you had to attach a checking account. But, I have no idea what the current "deal" is now that eBay has changed to only accepting PayPal. One thing that I really like about having a PayPal account is that there are so many other online "stores" that accept PayPal. I'd much rather pay for online purchases that way than have to enter credit card info on all of the various sites from which I purchase stuff.

I don't understand the fear of giving bank account info to Paypal. It is one of the most secure online financial institution around. Their security is as good and even better than some banks. When you pay through them your bank account or credit card info isn't shared with anyone. They are the middleman that can protect you from identity theft. Online banking and bill paying is so much safer than using snail mail. When you do a financial transaction online you are immediately notified by email. Not so with snail mail.If your check or money order or credit card payment in the mail gets lost or stolen it could be a month before you find out about it. With online purchases an payments you know immediately. Paypal adds one more layer of security to the process. I wonder how many of you that mistrust Paypal happily write checks, hand over debit cards and give credit cards to strangers every day. The clerks the gas station guy,the food servers and even the post office. Lose a gift card? Anyone can use it. Same with many debit cards and credit cards. Some places don't even require a pin to use them for purchases under a certain amount. Swipe and go. No one checks ID or even the back of the card. Online is so much safer on so many levels. I shop online whenever possible. I have bought large ticket items like a 5000.00 range and most recently cabinetry. Never had a problem. Well one guy didn't send and 10.00 widget and Paypal refunded me. DS is a security guy and he has probably made over hundreds of thousands in dollars of online transactions and has never had a problem.

Contact your email server and let them know of suspicious activity. They will look to see how much email is going out of your account (and have automatic checks). I believe they can halt your account from sending until you figure out what you want to do. Have you scanned your system for malware? If they got that password it's likely they got other accounts. I'd go to a known clean computer or smartphone and change all passwords. I'd also get new credit cards issued. Bleeping Computer will do an in-depth, multi-layered check of your system to see if malware is the problem or you could just back up and reformat to make sure anything hiding is cleaned off (some can hide from AV software). Then change all passwords again.

The seller's site had the option of choosing PayPal or paying directly with a credit card. I chose the latter, but still got the Paypal receipt. Although I do not have a Paypal account, you still need to go through Paypal to pay. It just appears you have an option to pay but this is deceitful.

The #1 rule in dealing with email is to never, never, never respond to any email asking for any info, updates, personal data, etc. Legitimate sites never send out such emails; only bad guys who want to steal your money and/or identity do. No matter how convincing or legitimate these emails seem, they aren't. Few things in life are absolute, but this rule is: don't click on any links in such a message, and delete the email immediately. If you want to check on any account you have, go directly to the site -- don't go through the bogus email, which can take you to a convincing-looking, but fake site -- and login at the real site or call the customer service number.

In all the years I've been with PayPal, I've never received a legitimate email from them with that message. However, I have received the email you are speaking of from phishers. DO NOT OPEN THESE EMAILS.

If you ever receive emails like this from other sites and you are leary, don't open, but go to the site in question and get a contact phone number to call. Tell them what you received and they'll let you know if it's from them(99.9999% of the time it's bogus).

Thanks, that's what I figured. I never respond to them, but they do have my email address. I used to have a address to forward those emails to but can't find it. I have sent them in the past to paypal, but never heard back.

I'll go to the paypal site directly.

When in doubt forward the email to:

spoof@paypal.com

Don't change anything in the email - just hit "forward" and put the above address in. You will soon get a reply from PayPal saying if the email is authenic, or a fraud.

I would say you are getting fraudulent emails.

Same for eBay - if in doubt forward to:

spoof@ebay.com
