I had a Bosch and returned it within 2 weeks. It had an odor and the dishes wouldn't get nearly as dry as previous dishwashers. And it was installed correctly . . . so don't believe the odor is going to be avoided by that. I think it may be the luck of the draw. Replaced it with a Kitchenaid KUDS03STSS. Love it, love it, love it. To my untrained ear sounds just as quiet as the Bosch. Gets the dishes totally dry and not a whiff of an odor. I truly believe that all appliances can have issues. So it will just depend on what happens in your case. My one absolute firm recommendation is to take your dishes and try them. My tall wine glasses did not fit in the Bosch but fit wonderfully in the Kitchenaid. My dog bowls (and I wash lots of them) did not fit well in the GE Profile (they wouldn't have stood upright so would have gotten filled with water) but fit perfectly in the Kitchenaid.

Hi Artemis, Sound like you have a set up very similar to ours. Here is what we have/had: The old stove (gone when we moved into our 1929 house) vented into the kitchen wall into a massive 12 inch diameter flue (metal flue, lined with ceramic). This flue went up the wall, through the attic, and out the roof (along with the furnace flue). When we moved in, the original stove was gone, and this flue was not hooked up to anything. The kitchen wall was repaired, and no opening to it remained. But we could easily see the flue from a crawl space on the opposite side of it. In the ceiling was a cheapo fan that vented up through the ceiling and out the roof. I would guess that yours does go out the roof, but whether or not you can reuse any of its "guts" depends on what hood you want. Ours is too narrow for a good quality hood. So, you need to get up in that attic, and count your flues! We needed to remove our massive flue (to make space for a future bathroom upstairs), and that was a very difficult and expensive proposition. I think we also removed the venting from the ceiling fan, which was not a big deal. We currently have a lovely 1955 O'Keefe and Merritt stove in our kitchen. We have no hood, and the house smells faintly of the homemade french fries I made last night. I can't wait to have a hood! We plan to put a high powered (vintage looking) hood over the stove, and vent out the roof. We don't plan on hooking up the stove pipe, because we need the wall space. If you are already hooked up to a stove pipe, and you are keeping your stove (which I would certainly encourage you to do b/c OKM's are awesome!), then you can leave that assembly alone. Just add a hood over the stove (unless the stove pipe is physically in the way). Without the stove pipe, you end up with a hole in the top of your stove from which quite a bit of heat (and odor) escapes. I'm used to it (though worried about the noxious odor--which a hood will take care of), but it does get hot! Here is my stove. The stove pipe hole is on the top left side. The old flue was in the wall behind the stove. I hope that helps a bit... Now get in that attic, and let us know what you find!

So I'm replacing my un-insulated vent tubing with insulated because i live in wisconsin and it condenses and drips through ceiling, comes out in low areas at seems of tubing because it goes across attic a distance of 15 - 18 feet on a curve with multiple low spots. I present have a sled under the seem to collect water from last winter tabokkal ! Choice is go up to roof 5-6 feet or out the present vent 15-18 feet with insulated pipe Or shorten the line by going straight to side of home but this requires going up high with latter to drill a new vent hole, as tight quarters in attic prevent drilling from attic. Going to the soffet is 12 feet. I was considering soffet only because I was fearful of too much slow covering my vent. Do I have a legitimate concern as sometimes roof is covered with 10 to 12 inches? My pitch is lower 12-18 I think thats right. Is there a certain vent style or type recommendation? Is there a height that is recommended for safety and efficiency with going up to roof? Thanks for any advice I'll wait patiently

I have a high-end HEPA air filter for when a smoking relative visits, and it is not hard to use up the filter just with regular invisible housedust and cigarette smoke. They work, and work well, for my purposes -- but I can't imagine the expense of trying to filter construction dust around the clock - the replacement filters are quite pricy (like $179), and you'd be replacing it every other day or so. I think the best use of HEPA technology is for more silent pollutants like pet dander, cigarette smoke, etc. Drywall dust will clog any filter within an hour, especially a fine one like HEPA. You might do better to specifically let your GC know about your dust concerns, and have them set up plastic barriers to the rest of the house, etc -- they can get fairly high-tech these days, with zippers and fans and whatnot.
