Kubuntu disk v8.04 got here 7 weeks early. Stuck it in the XP CD-RW and tried to reboot it up about 4-5 times and run it from the cd - Nope.

==========================================

Next installed it into Windows XP via wubi I guess and rebooted and Got this mssg:

BusyBox v1.1.3(Debian 1:1.1.3-5 ubuntu12) Built-in Shell (ash)

Enter help for a list of commands

(initramfs)_ blinking prompt

4711 commands, tried a couple got nuthin. "yes" produced a string of "y"s a mile long.

Had to shut down the computer with the master switch on the surge protector to get out of that pickle. Did that 2ice.

===============================

Reassembled my old w/98 machine (off line) and tried a complete full install on the entire disk-no partitions. Well first it said my MB (I think) was too old ie 1999 and 2000 was the cutoff. 10gig HD and 768 Ram.

Then I tried to install in some safe mode maybe it was safe graphic mode ? and away it went for 35% where it got stuck cause it couldn't read the CD disk. Well how did it get that far if it couldn't read the CD disk?

Tried that 2ice too - same drill - had to pull the plug to start over.

============================

Well the trash, recycle and such is out by the curb and the collection trucks come tomorrow - bye bye Kublumptu.

    Sounds like you have a bad CD. Did you download it and burn it yourself? If so, did you verify it at every step to ensure it was a good copy?

  • 17 years ago

    well first off you must set your pc so that boot from cd is the first boot option if yours would not boot from the cd it likely was not set that way.

    giving it one day try is not much of a try, there are tons of people who can help with your problems on the ubuntu forums.
    and as owbist says sometimes it is just a bad cd.

    if using wubi, to take it back off, all you have to do is go into add remove programs and choose remove.

    No, I didn't burn the disk I got one from them.

    Finally got it installed on my old machine. Seems the CD has to stay in there tho for it to work - why is that?

    Looked like the ACPI or some such function had to be forced which I finally chose an install option that musta did that.

    The refresh rate is 60!!!!! No other option that I can see. The screen flickers. If I can't change that its all over. The graphics card certainly supports higher cause it was at 85 before.

    Its like pushing string. Tried to get higher refresh rate and now its gone to 640x480 resolution, can't break it from that. Was about 1280x960 roughly - perfect.

    I tried to register on the kubuntu forum but the email confirmation never came thru. Maybe its supposed to take a couple days?

    Times running out on this project

    back on the original thread where we discussed linux it was explained that the linux cd is a LIVE cd, you just put it in the cd drawer and boot your pc, then your pc runs the linux right off of the cd, that way you are not touching your windows part at all, you can surf and check email and do what ever you want while using the linux live cd and when done and want to go back to windows simply turn off the pc and remove the linux cd and reboot and you are back to windows.

    That is why it is so safe to use that way. Once you have used it and see that it works well with your system and you like it you can certainly choose to install it to your hard drive in a NEW partition which you would have to set up for it to install to, doing that will let it run right from the pc with out the cd in. That is an option that is on the live cd to do an install and in the steps it leads you through is how to install it to a partition, the program to create a partition is right on the cd.

    I think probably you should read some of the past threads and also some links about how to use and set it up.

    The resolution has an option when you first put the cd in at the bottom for setting what your required settings should be.

    and I suggest you not throw that cd away because some day when your windows crashes and burns you can use that cd in the cd drawer to get to all your files and data on the windows part which you can not get to using windows because, you know, it died. With that live cd you can retrieve your data from a dead windows pc.

    If you read my posts instead of glancing at em you will find that I installed the kubuntu onto a separate computer with no partitions or one partition whichwver way you may like to put it. Kubuntu is all there is on that comp.

    I asked for and went thru all the steps and specified all that was axt for and it installed. It ran. I was not on line with that comp yet as the router is in the drawer yet. That'd been the next step after the following:

    First thing I did was to reverse the mouse buttons as I have been using them reversed for 14 years. 2d then I tried to change the refresh rate from 60 to 75 so the screen didn't quiver. At 60 I see it shake like hell. Many do not. I do. That's how it is.

    With W98 it was set at 85HZ. Its an ATi Rage II C. This system hardware calls it an ATi Rage 128. Original startup had resolution of about 1280x860 or so. I tried forcing it to try a different card like Ati Rage Fury for example and wound up with 640x480 and no way to increase it. There is a slider in the systems setting and it is maxed at 640x480 and I can find no way to increase it.

    Nor can I apparently get logged on the the kubuntu forum because they have sent me a confirming email 6 times today and I have not recieved it. They say look in my spam file well I don't have one.
    ================
    I did not install it to windows. As of just now with the help of my trusty paperclip the CD is out of the machine (finally) and it runs just fine. Starts, runs performs etc etc I even opened a Spread sheet.

    BUT! The resolution is 640x480 and there is no option to increase it. Now I can get 75HZ at 640x180 but that's no help if one field of the spreadsheet covers the screen. perhaps I should reformat and reinstall - what a drag.

    And yes, strange as it may seem, I know linux is not windows. Why do you spose I am trying it out?

    those happen to be links that are given to all new linux uses to try to help them out and most of them appreciate them and the help we freely offer to new users. They are in fact the very ones given to me on my first install for which I have been extremely grateful, but feel free to simply delete them.

    I did most certainly read your posts but was completely unable to follow the discourse of what had been done and how many computers were even involved.

    Perhaps someone else will be able to help you

    When I installed or ran Ubuntu from a live CD I never got it online and I could not set the screen resolution or refresh rate to a higher setting.

    Then I tried SimplyMEPIS and everything is good.

  • 17 years ago

    Got the resolution back - found a repair kernal during re-boot and gave it a shot - worked.

    Owbist: I'm workng from a full install - not a live CD.

    Raven: Thanx for the websites - I'll read em soon as I can find time.

    Ubuntu has worked so well for me that I haven't tried any of the other distributions. Maybe this winter when I have more time inside I will try some of them.

  • 17 years ago

    I too use SimplyMepis that is my daily use distro, I have used gOS, ubuntu/kubuntu but for me Mepis just works it is one distro that everything usually works out the box, even wireless which many distros have issues with.
    There is a brand new Mepis8 in the works right now, Baldy is one of the ones working on it, he has been telling me it is very nice so I look forward to the day it is ready for public release. Warren does good work that is for sure.

    bob if you do decide to give some a try you might look at Mepis it may be addicting LOL I much prefer KDE to Gnome and Mepis does use KDE.

    My kubuntu disk arrived on Saturday, and this is the first opportunity I have had to try it out. I am using the live CD in my CDROM, and I had no problem at all booting up and finding and using the browser. Not sure I'll ever actually install it, but it is interesting, and I'm sure I'll be playing around with it some more, expecially with audio and video files.

    Who knows? I may finally get all my bookmarks entered and use this exclusively for surfing. If I decided to do that, I would probably install as a program in Windows.
