I read that HP is going to discontinue making computer .. I sure hope that they continue making parts & giving support of us who have bought them..

Years ago I was told companies have to make parts for 7 years after they stop. Don't know how it is now.

I don't know who I will buy a computer from if they do.

It seemed that the PSG, HP's Personal System Group, is separating its PC group into a separate company. If this is so, the PCs will might still be there but maybe under another name.

It's so sad of what's becoming of PSG but this has been planned for quite a few years now. I wish Compaq Corp. was still here with us. Sigh...

Tumble_weed, There is a MacKissic distributor listed in Dallas, who should be able to tell you where your MacKissic dealers are. "I am wanting to get a MacKissic 763 or possibly the 12PT10. I am favoring the 763 because of its smaller size, better fit for my small backyard city garden." The 763 costs about $1200, while the 12PT10 costs about $1700. For about $500 more than the 763, the 12PT10 is about twice the machine, so that extra $500 buys you a lot. I keep my 12PT9 (the 9hp predecessor to the 12PT10) outdoors under an optional cover, so garage space isn't an issue for me. It's about the size of a large wagon, so it's not that big, and its four-wheel design makes it more stable and easier to move around. The larger shredder hopper and throat opening make feeding leaves faster with the 12PT10 than the 763. If you can afford it, I recommend the 12PT10 over the 763, even for a small city lot. I think it would give you a better shredding experience, even in a small city back yard. MM

@walt2002, hey i was wondering if you were still here, i have read many of your replies and was hoping to hear from you and mownie, you 2 seem to have a wealth of knowledge on these things, i will try the carb first, because it is the easier than the head, but how would the carb cause fire to pop in the carb? im no genius but it seems compression is coming through the carb, and with the few parts in the carb, even no diaphragm, i cant under stand how it would be bad, do they have a ball and spring behind a welch plug like the old model walbro carbs?, i remember years ago when i worked on them a rule of thumb was if you shook them and heard no rattle they were no good, it had something to do with a barometric pressure adjuster valve, you didnt have to adjust the carb in higher locations as you did a b&s carb, just wondering, because i cleaned the carb twice, i put it in a bowl of water while disassembled and used a small straw to blow air through every hole, got bubbles on all, but i will swap them anyway and see, i just want to know what it is, thanks for your advice man

I'd suggest Walmart. Some pretty decent utilitarian models there to be had for about 400 dollars. I just got a 1 terabyte external storage drive on Amazon for 99 dollars. I had to return the first one as defective. A week later I noticed a 79 dollar Toshiba 1TB drive at walmart. I should have checked there first. I also got a 16gb usb drive at walmart for 9.95 that day. For computer nuts and bolts basics walmart's not bad. And the returns are so much easier than the web. The way I've been computer shopping for the last 13 years is to spend 1000 dollars every five to six years. That's the sweet spot for my needs. It's astonishing how much more you get each year for the same dollar spent. I do some CAD and quite a bit of HTPC (home theater PC) so 1000 dollars is about the ball park for me and I'm due to upgrade in a couple of years. Your description sounds like 300 to 400 would give you something more than adequate for your needs. Don't let sales people or computer "enthusiasts" talk you up in price or needs. If your needs are simple, you'll discover that todays entry level machines can do extraordinary things. One caveat to that is speed and storage capacity. Obsolescence can sneak up on you when connectivity and web content continues to get more labor intensive for the CPU. My 10 year old Toshiba was retired to the family den for light browsing and email use, and I finally upgraded the harddrive to 40gb as an absolute minimum requirement for today's browsers, utilities, and common programs. It runs like the day I bought it, but that's saying that it generally just can't keep up any more when web connected. I'd call it a "dial up" class notebook. Most laptops in your price range will be set up adequately for today's needs. But if it comes down to A vs B at similar price, look closely at the quality and speed of the central processor and the storage capacity of the drive. They're the best indicators of future proofing a computer. You also might want to ask around among people you know who own Apple computers. Asking such a question on the web is just an invitation to information overload. But odds are good that someone you know uses an Apple and they may be a good source of encouragement or discouragement. My hunch however is that if you aren't excessively into social media like facebook and others, wireless file transfers, printing, and connectivity with cell phones, automobiles, etc,etc (good lord) all the latest gadgets and utilities, etc ,etc, a PC would be the more user friendly for you as a basic computing tool.

Hi, we have similar situation to research. We are looking into upgrading our HVAC and have question as to go with Heat Pump with Electric or Oil backup. Background: Central Massachusetts, 20 year old house, 3000sqft typical two story colonial with central forced hot air oil furnace and AC. Currently 5ton AC and heating with 80% efficient and I think 110000BTU oil furnace. Which might be more than necessary. No natural gas available. Oil or Propane. 200Amp main panel. Electric rates are about 11.39cents per KWH. Oil rates are about $4.00 dollars per gallon. AC is only two months or so, heating is more important. So we are thinking of choosing a low temperature Heat Pump with good HSFP, SEER is less important. Questions: We were wondering if for the price of electric and oil if we can move to electric as backup in this area (New England). Would there also be any re-sale issues later too? Our dealer is also recommending Byrant 280A 5 Ton low temperature with 20KW, which we might request to bump up to the three stage 24KW heat strips because we keep warm temperature (70F). Thank you for any help you can give.

What's interesting is that not too long ago someone suggested that HP sell off it's computer division. Their response was that it would be "irresponsible..." Nothing like quarterly results to change someone's mind. ;-)

As part of the announcement HP also said they would be discontinuing cell phones (know anyone who owns an iPAQ) and tablets. I thought that was the reason they bought Palm...

Key words here are "exploration" and "evaluation". The key sentence is "There can be no assurance that any transaction regarding PSG will be pursued or completed."

Only time will tell, and the sky is not falling.

Remember when Carla was CEO and they bought Compaq for XX billions?

Right after I read about this yesterday, I received an email from HP advertising their tablet. Understand BB is sitting on a huge inventory of them.

Seems Apple has done them in.

Problem is if doom and gloom is unnecessarily promoted newbies, those of limited means, and perhaps others may become overly concerned. I have seen these announcements to shareholders before. Some have come to fruition while some have not.

Information is powerful. "A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing." However, worrying has never changed anything. Only time will tell.

Well, shareholders were not happy at the news. HP's stock fell 20% in value today.

I'm looking for the independent analysis of the day to see if that is shareholder reaction, or just another stock falling due to the Wall Street panic and paranoia.

Personal computers are just a commodity these days, built by contract assemblers in China just like microwave ovens.No big money in it. Probably sell it off with use of the HP name for five years or something. Just like what became Lexmark was the old IBM unit for personal computer printers.

DA, in another article in the SBJ, HP is mentioned as a possible takeover target for Oracle. Wouldn't that be sweet revenge for Mark Hurd?
