Split faced block in residential applications?

sanctuarygirl

Would like some opinions on the viability of using split faced block in home construction? Was looking at brick (maybe stone), but why not include split faced block? I live in the South, where brick is pretty much the standard exterior finish. I know this block is mostly used for public and commericial buildings, but one of the oldest homes in my town is built using this material and I think it is very attractive (probably dates to very early 20th century). Besides cost, what are the cons of this material for residential applications (durability, maintenance, etc)?
