Battery or Battery Charger?

How does one know if there's a problem with the battery on a laptop or if the problem is with the battery charger? I have a brand new battery installed but it seems to be very slow to charge up. Do the chargers wear out also?

How slow is it to charge up. I assume its an exact same replacement. How old is the laptop/adapter. The charging mechanism is built inside a laptop, the brick or adapter which is on the power cord has nothing to do with the charging of the battery other than supplying the proper voltage/amperage to your laptop

My laptop battery charges real slow when online surfing around or or seems to not at all gain charge at times when running streaming video or defrag. Typically takes all day, or fairly quickly charges when I turn off the laptop.

Model numbers could also be of help. I see a number of Deere / Briggs engine with the external voltage regulator that won't shut down and creates a substantial draw. If you see a 2 inch square box on the side of the engine with two connectors coming out of it- temporarily disconnect the small red barrel connector and see if the battery still draws down.

Unless you're qualified to do board level diagnosis and repair I'd consider a $70 battery charger disposable rather than chance that a $30 part would fix it. Electronics are a PITA to fix in this surface mount and IC day and age. Stuff is designed to be cheap to manufacture and that usually means don't try to fix it unless you find a bad connection or blown fuse. Did you contact Schumacher to see if they would warranty the charger?

Thanks kalining, My car battery is good, but one bad thing about my Honda Odyssey is that if you accidentally leave on the dome light switch, its dead in the morning. We try to always leave the switch in the off position, but **** happens. haha One time I dusted off the dash area, and forgot to check on that switch and ended up with a dead battery in the morning. Bummer. My van is 11 years old, so hopefully the newer ones have an auto shut off for that dome light.

The laptop is 4 years old; the battery and the charger are the originals. Yes, it is extremely slow to charge.
