CC rangetop sits flush with counter or on top?

I have a 36" CC rangetop. When my counters were templated this week, my templater said that range tops sit on top of the stone. The CC does have a lip on it so it looks like it makes sense to install the counters and drop the CC in on top. BUT, then the rangetop sits up higher than the counters. In my head, I saw the rangetop sitting flush with the cabs on either side. I'm going for the cleanest, simplest lines I can get.

I've looked at so many pics of rangetops online, but can't find many of the CC and those I do find aren't conclusive as to installation.

So how, exactly, does the CC rangetop sit in relation to the counter?

We just installed the CC rangetop 3 weeks ago and it sits on top. Just for additional clarification, the rangetop actually slides in during the installation process. The fact that the rangetop sits on the counter prevents "stuff" from falling down into your base cabinet. The following picture was taken before installation to show how the rangetop interacts with the counter and base cabinet. This picture was taken from the back side and acts as a cut-away shot. Mine is an island installation so I built additional support in my base cabinet so the rangetop is actually being supported by the counter as well as the cabinet supports.

Here is a picture after installation that hopefully you can see that it does sit above the counter. HTH

This is a commercial rangetop, for sale on eBay. It's a Wolf brand, with the model number CCT-361A. The thing is at least a foot tall. I would expect that you would have to be an extremely tall individual in order to cook with it sitting on a standard height countertop. The thing won't have electronic ignition. You will either have to light it with a match or keep a pilot light lit constantly on the thing. It will also likely violate every firecode imaginable. Before you buy the thing I would order a copy of the product documentation to find out what the minimum clearances are on every side of that rangetop. Commercial cooking appliances generally have different clearance requirements than residential. You will want to make sure that you have adequate space to install the rangetop.

If your rangetop is like our 36" Thermador rangetop, the unit sits on the counter. It is not supposed to be flush. The instructions for ours were fairly clear.

If your long straightedge is bowing from the pressure of the router, you could support it in the middle by butting a two-foot-long scrap of particleboard (or almost anything, really) against the back of the straightedge and clamping it to the far side of the counter. That said, as long as the bow in the front edge is a smooth, even contour without abrupt jogs, it shouldn't cause any problem with the laminate. It might be better aesthetically if it were straight, but the laminate doesn't care if it's got a gentle curve in it. It's hard to imagine the counters are sagging on the sawhorses so much that they'll be permanently distorted by gluing laminate on them in that position. However, you'll need them fairly well supported for the glue up so you can lean some of your weight on the roller you use to press the glued surfaces together. For that reason alone it's worth supporting them well. You don't need a lot of sawhorses; I'd just put a couple of 2x4s on edge, on top of the sawhorses to provide even support along the whole length. You'll need to stabilize those 2x4s a bit, probably by nailing or screwing a couple of cross pieces between them, so they don't fall over flat at some inopportune moment. What size router do you have? There's nothing wrong with holding the router sideways except that you don't have practice doing it, and it could be difficult if you have a large, heavy router. The ones made for laminate trimming are small and light and can be held at odd angles with one hand. If you're stuck with a bigger, general-purpose router then it may be worth getting some help to set the pieces on edge as you described. You don't need a giant vise; just clamp it to some stable vertical object like a cabinet frame or the side of a sawhorse. When the clamp gets in the way, stop routing and repostition as necessary. Whichever way you go, if you've never done it before and you can't afford to goof, PRACTICE on some scrap!

We have a friend who has a walk-all-around work surface (hate to call it an island, more like sawhorses with curtains underneath) made of two old large butcherblock countertops so there's a seam at back, parallel to long sides. His knives are kept in slit at the seam area--not sure if he routed it out or not. No special slot for any single knife, just dump them in the long groove. He loves to roast large cuts of meat Renaissance style, so that surface is his butchershop as well as his slicing and serving spot. That product featured above with the bamboo sticks is very interesting, but would have same problem as other knife blocks--the distance to pull up before moving laterally with the knife. My problem is the desire to locate the knives deep to back of countertop, under the uppers. I have two well-used blocks, but have to pull them to front of counter before lifting knives upward. Angled blocks suck up too much precious space.

I Concur.

hey Steelcfo, when you turn on your burners on high, do only some of the gas outlets on the burner head ignite? I usually have to turn the know down, then back up to get more pressure.

The CC Burners light better when there is a pan on the grate above them. It helpe to confine the gas.

Tony - Most of the time (90%) they light they light on high without turning the knob down slightly and back up.

It is totally dependent on how your cabinet designer laid it out. It takes a fair bit of calculation to have a rangetop sit flush with the countertops and I don't know of any manufacturers specification drawings that show or have that measurement on them.

Breezy, We installed our Wolf rangetop a tad higher than the counter on purpose, to avoid the possible "close, but just misses" problem. But ours sits in between the flanking countertops, which I assume, you were expecting the CC to do. Believe me, that overlapping design looks better. SO much stuff gets wedged in the seam between, and I have to try to clean it out with a knife or spatula inserted into the seam area. I guess it's just a different way to consider that you'll have "cleaner lines." :-)
