add ons to Firefox

I'm getting a new computer soon, but in the meantime am having problems with non responsiveness and it sounds as though something is running in the background all the time. I notice that Firefox has these extensions that start with Firefox: Java console 6.0.13 , 6.0.14, 6.0.15., etc. all the way up to 6.0.21. Do I need all these starting when I start Firefox? If not, can I remove them safely from the add-ons?

It usually takes ten minutes before I can get the machine to act right after starting. It sounds as though something is loading ( or doing a complete scan).

you only want the latest one so yes you can safely remove them.
You might want to get start up lite by the makers of malwarebytes and take a look at your start ups and make adjustments using start up lite.

you can also go to start> all programs> mozilla and choose the option to start firefox in safe mode to see if any of your add ons etc would be affecting it if so you can then try enabling them one at a time.

If you do not use the secunia tool to check for needed updates I would do that also.

I have Avg free and all updates. That also runs , or seems to, constantly. It updates almost daily and scans take forever, with the computer not running right till updates stop. It has become a PAIN, but I don't know what else to use . Once I get the new computer, I'm hoping to be a little more selective.

I am not getting these follow-up posts emailed to me even though i checked to have emails sent - so I didn't know there was more. I hope they keep supporting version 3 - since we have 5 xp computers between home and work. I do have FF4 on dd's laptop - but not quite sure how it's going for her. She said she didn't like it - and I offered to try above suggestions to make it appear more like she's familiar with. She wants me to in theory - but in reality never wants to hand over the computer to have me do it. When I have more leisure to try again, am I recalling correctly that I can have 2 firefoxes installed - one version 3, and one version 4? And I can use xmarks to sync bookmarks, etc. That way I can get used to ff4 - but go back to 3 for the times I need things to go smoothly and not tinker? Any special instructions for doing 2 firefoxes? Thank you. Lynn. PS - still wonder if anyone else if having the issue where responses don't get emailed to them. This happens now for all my posts the last month - on this and the cooking forum.

I use IE View, but it may no longer be available. There is IE View Lite which is supposed to work the same way. I open a page in firefox, bookmark it, right click on the page and then select 'view this page in IE' from the context menu. The page then opens in IE and when I click on the bookmark later the page opens in IE. If you don't bookmark it first you won't be able to bookmark it in firefox later. javara is a very legit and safe program we have used and recommended it for years on the help forums. the old ones can be removed manually but using javara just makes it easy and gets some that you may miss manually. any versions you show other than the latest version can be removed. Java has recently added a feature that is supposed to remove the old version it is replacing but they never put out anything that would remove the versions prior to that so it is not surprising to see some very old versions still listed on older pcs. How I would proceed, do the update from the java icon on the pc, that should provide you with 7-7, then run javara and let it remove all other versions it finds.

Firefox has so many good add-ons. I have NoSquint, but I use Zoom Toolbar more. I really like Copy as HTML link, and WOT is great also. Love that Firefox! Sue

If you are not comfortable or unsatisfied with the above recommendation you can give a go with old tried and true WinPatrol.

agree winpatrol is also an excellent program more robust and also a security aid.

If you are unhappy with AVG you might try AVAST which is what I use on my computers or MSE which several others here use, both are free. You would need to run the AVG removal tool to get it all off. The new computer will no doubt come loaded with some trial version that will require removal also by their removal tool, should you need those here they are listed on Corrine's blog.

Be aware that WP will add itself to the startup. You can use WP to disable itself from the startup so it becomes an on-demand application. No since adding more resource use when your concern is slow activity.

Also if you do use it, when you click on the Desktop icon the application will not appear. What will occur is an icon, "Scotty", will appear in the Taskbar/Notification Area. Clicking on it will present the viewing of the application.
