All fridge/freezer units........worth it?

We are finalizing our appliance choices this week and we leaning toward the new SZ 48" SXS. Fortunately, we have the space (and budget) for separate all fridge/freezer units. We really liked the Thermador columns like many here do and we even thought about the SZ separate 36" units. If we chose separate units, we would separate the units on each side of the wall to give a symmetric and balanced look which we think looks great.

My question is; is it worth the extra cost (about $2-3 K) in our case for this? Sure you get more space and the nice look, but is it really worth it. I would like to hear from those who have separate units and think it was a good or bad decision. We are certain that for our family, a 48" SXS would offer enough space.

I have the Electrolux all fridge/freezer and absolutely love them. I love the look and it gives me a tremendous amount of space which is great for my family. If a 48" SXS would offer enough space for you then only you can decide if the extra money for the all fridge/freezer is worth it to you.

Yes, I think it's worth it. We've had "all" SZ units for 20 years, in two houses, and think they offer the most bang for the money. In our new house, we opted for a second 36" refrigerator with glass front instead of a (undercounter) beverage center, and this has proved so practical: it gets people out of the main part of the kitchen, we can store food safely, & we have extra space for party trays, brining the turkey, or other big projects that require refrigerator space.

An old 48" SZ SxS came with our lakehouse, & both sections are skinny.

It is a wonderful luxury to have nicely organized refrigerator & freezer space rather than having to stuff & unpack all the time. We waste very little food because it doesn't get lost.

It seems that folks with the counter depth, french door models seem to be having significant reliability issues (mostly with water and ice dispensers) - have any of you had these with the all fridge, all freezer models? How difficult is it to keep the stainless reasonably clean? I had my heart set on a fridge/freezer with custom panels but it's an area we are tring to save money in the kitchen (the Thermador would have been $9000 plus the custom panels, Subzero was over 12K plus the panels!). Finally - I'm having trouble figuring out the difference between the Electrolux and Electrolux Icon models, other than about $450! The sales people haven't been particularly helpful either, they are just reading off the same sheet I am. Thanks for any input!

We have 2 Elux all-fridges and 1 all-freezer. We purchased them in 2007, but moved in in 2008 and started using them. So, it's 6 1/2 yrs later, and we've had no service calls. 1 of the fridge's interior light has a will of its own, so doesn't always come on, and the readout occasionally tries to give me an error code. From what I could find online, that code is related to the evaporator fan motor... But it keeps working and the code goes away. It's done that for a few years now. I haven't had it checked. Meant to at first, but the fridge keeps working fine, so at this point, I'm figuring it's a false alarm. The other fridge and the freezer have had absolutely no problems. I know this is just one family's experience and opinion, and you're looking for more stats for a greater number of units, but I think they're a good bet. The only reason I might not buy them again is the way the drawers are attached to the shelves above so they're a pain to take out and get clean. Maybe they've changed that by now.

Look at Miele. It is comparable to SZ. They each have their adherents. (Myself, I have a SZ and love it). One person who has frequent power outages went with Miele because she felt that the control board could survive power outages more successfully. Liebherr is nice too but most people think it is a step down, a little more plasticky, but many people love them. I think KA can be paneled too. Don't have a view on that one.

Definitely leaning toward all units at this time for looks and space. Really like the new SZ BI36 units and the Thermador columns. I have been intrigued by the Electrolux ICON units and the Bosch units but have heard some megative comments. I also think the Viking units look nice but there have been even more negative comments about these so will likely stay away. Anybody else have experience with any of these units?

We have had our Icons for only about 2 months. When it was first installed the refrigerator was not running. Repairman came and said the compressor was not connected. He connected it and we have not had any problems since.

Thought about it but instead opted for a 48" SxS plus a second fridge/freezer in the laundry room, which is convenient to both the garage and the backyard.

Yes, i think that may be a viable option for us as well as our laundry room is right next to the kitchen as well as the garage and backyard.

OK, I am convinced. Seems unanimous that if you have the space and budget, you are better off getting dual units. Like I mentioned, we would separate the units on each side of the "fridge" wall. We really like the integrated look and not sure between SS and panelled.

With that in mind, which is better and why? Thermador columns or the new SZ built ins with the flush inset? So far seems as if all of the Therm owners have nothing but good things to say. Anybody have the new SZ in flush inset? How "integrated" does it look compared to the truly integrated SZ line?
