Drain pump noise - GE SmartDispense Dishwasher

We've had our GE SmartDispense dishwasher for about five months now. When we first got it, it was dead silent, you had to put your ear right up there and all you could hear water water trickling down the door. It seems noisier now, but still much quieter than any dishwasher I've heard. EXCEPT, after the drain pump has cleared all the water, it makes a low-pitched rattle noise. It only lasts 15-20 seconds and then the pump shuts off. Does anyone else have this issue? It's not bad, but I like to be able to run a load while we're dining -- especially, when we have guests as there is often a lot of dishes. This intermittent noise is a little off-putting. Is it worth having someone out to look at it?

I do not have that type of dishwasher. But while you are still under warranty, I would definitely have somebody come and check out the noise. At 5 months, you should still be delighted and the dishwasher should not start making new rattling noises.

My new approach to appliance care is to call whenever there is a question especially if it is under warranty. If you can reproduce the sound for the repairman that makes it even easier. What if this is the initial rattle before the last gasp and you're left without a working dishwasher for a while?

I'm having 2 GE Profile dishwashers installed next week to replace the 2 that were recalled. GE would fix them for free but the one at our vacation house is over 10 years old and the one at my home is 7 and doesn't always dry well. So they'll contribute $300 towards each new Profile. I'm glad you report that they are quiet.

If the house is a new build then the tee for the dishwasher will need to be cut to allow for drainage. Just like a garbage disposal has a knock out plug the new tee needs to be prepped. I found this out because i also had a couple of inches of water at the end of the test cycle and everything was connected texbook. And i thought i didn't have the high loop high enough but it was fine just a purposely blocked new tee. A ge tech had to tell me this, I felt dumb because i have installed numerous dishwashers but never in a brand new home. Hope this helps

Kind of depends on what your jurisdiction requires on why it is there. If it is super annoying you can do a high water loop and get rid of the air gap. There will still be gurgling drain noise coming from the sink drain. I guess if your air gap is excessively loud for some reason then maybe worth removing but I am not sure. The high loop or air gap is there so sink drain water doesnt end up in the dishwasher. Thinking outside of the box, I guess you would need a nonconventional installation if you want no noise. Something similar to a washing machine standpipe setup with its own separate trap but under the sink.

I thought about the disposer drain plug angle ... but the OP says that the drain problem continues on successive cycles when the hose is disconnected from the disposer and aimed into a 5-gal bucket. Robert Simmons, there are three versions of the cited model number. Should be an additional digit on it after the M. GDF510PSM0SS, GDF510PSM4SS, and GDF510PSM5SS. The digit is an engineering/design revision number and is important for parts identification. Is yours GDF510PSM4SS? Parts diagrams show that the 0 and 5 versions do not have the referenced tab with orange plug. The 4 version has it, called a "check valve" which presumably is to prevent backflow through the drain hose. Should be a little flapper disk at the bottom. Flow pressure from the drain pump opens it for water to pass through. No drain pump pressure, the flapper closes to prevent backflow. The diagram shows "Do Not Remove" embossed on top of the tab.
