I've never found a way to save mine except one at a time. If I have an email I want to save I print it out as soon as I get it and put it a 3 ring notebook. I also print out the address list.

What are you using for an email client?

I back up my emails as .eml files.
I use Outlook Express.

I create an empty folder for email.
I open the folder where I can drag stuff to it.
I open Outlook Express and disable the preview pane.
I click on the first email, then hold down the shift key
and click the last email. This highlights all of them.
Then I just drag the whole bunch to the empty folder.
I can delete them from Outlook Express after that.

The folder with all of the emails can be moved to data disks
just like everything else I save to data disks.

Do I have to have an email client (pc-based email program) like thunderbird or outlook express - in order to save emails to my PC? If so, I might get a program just for that. If not, is there another way to save my emails to pc?

You can save the important one, one at the time by
copy and paste to Word Pad or Microsoft Works or Word.
That's what I did, but I have a lot time on my hands.

Ravencajun - i checked out the email about backing up to outlook express (and the importing outlook into gmail. I looked around at that person's site (some good info there), but i still don't quite get why i have to forward emails from one gmail account to another gmail account in order to be able to import them into Outlook (or Thunderbird). Couldn't I import directly from either my AOL or gmail account right into a outlook express or thunderbird?

yes the person asking here has earthlink though not gmail.

you can certainly import directly from gmail directly to OE or thunderbird.
