explain this please?

I see it here in the forum, I have received emails from folks, stating that their "computer crashed"

Just what does this really mean?

Too much "stuff" on the HD, not doing cleanups, defragging, virus control etc., over all the years of having a computer, and seeing this statement, I still don't know what it means, can someone explain this terminolgy to me?

A crash (or system crash) in computing is a condition where a program (either an application or part of the operating system) exits abnormally after encountering an error. Often the offending program may simply appear to freeze or hang until a crash reporting service documents details of the crash. If this program is a critical part of the operating system kernel the entire computer may crash. This is different from a hang or freeze where the application or OS continues to run without obvious response to input.

humans are diploid (di- means two) - we have two complete sets of chromosomes. One set comes from mom, one set from dad, making pairs of chromosomes. Sometimes with plants, they will get double the number... 4 sets of chromosomes (tetra- means four). It can happen in nature, but certainly the chemicals involved in tissue culturing produce more sports faster, including "ploidy" sports. Plants can also be triploids - 3 sets of chromosomes. That is the limit of my knowledge... don't know if there are any pentaploids or hexaploids or whatever. In hostas, the tetraploid sport will often differ from the parent by having more "substance" - there will be more "there" there. Thicker leaves, often stiffer stems. If the parent has a margin, the tetraploid will often have wider margins than the parent... and it seems that the contrast in colors is often more pronounced. There was a time not long ago when it seems like every tetraploid sport was touted as an improvement on the orgininal. Twilight was supposed to replace its parent, the ubiquitous Fortunei Aureomarginata. First Mate would replace Kabitan. Touch of Class was supposed to replace June. Grand Tiara would replace Golden Tiara, and in the process the sports of Grand would replace the similar sports out of Golden... Amber Tiara, tetraploid all yellow out of Grand, for example, would replace Golden Scepter out of Golden... The assumption was that the tets would all have more substance and that they would tolerate sun better and they would grow faster. As with most assumptions, this was about half right. Twilight is a little stiffer than FA - but it hasn't grown faster... in fact, a little slower for me... and it doesn't hold up to direct hot sun even quite as well as its parent, I think. First Mate, while striking in color and substance, is not nearly as vigorous a grower as its parent. Touch of Class won't replace June - but in this case, it deserves great attention on its own... both definitely deserve a place in any hosta garden. A single plant of Grand Tiara next to Golden Tiara will win the contest... but Grand doesn't grow anywhere near as fast as Golden. (But then again, no other hosta grows as fast as Golden Tiara, so Grand is still a "good grower.") But its sports have all been a disappointment. Amber Tiara is very slow compared with Golden Scepter, and the color isn't striking like GS can be early in the spring. Grand Prize has great color - but is actually a pretty slow grower and kind of sensitive. Heavenly Tiara even more so... the other one... Gold Heart? - disappeared from my group planting completely after a few years. Bottom line - tetraploids might grow better, or they might grow the same, or they might grow slower. They might have better color - or they might not. Wider margins are not always more attractive. And they will probably be thicker - but that isn't necessarily good and it doesn't guarantee better sun tolerance. I love the little thin margin on Change of Tradition and the elegant narrow green leaves. A tetraploid sport of CoT would probably have a wider margin, thicker more upright leaves - and non of the charm of the parent. We are seeing a little more restraint in the hype over ploidy these days. Time will tell which ones are really improvements. Some good recent candidates... Sweet Innocence is billed as a tet Fragrant Bouquet. Since the worst comment about FB was usually its relatively thin leaves, SI with its stronger color contrast and wider margins and greater substance MIGHT turn out to be better than FB.hope that helps! Little Jay is a cute mini... but it had lots of white center and, though it has wintered successfully, left me with worries about its growth - and the fact I've already had some green sporting. Little Treasure went into widespread wholesale this year - tet sport of Little Jay. It seems to be a stronger plant... definitely has wider margins which might contribute to faster growth (more chlorophyll often contributes to better growth.) I think it might prove to be a better plant than the parent. Atlantis is a tet sport of Abba Dabba Do. Since I thought ADD was about as good as a hosta can get... fast growth to huge size, very attractive leaves - much better plant than its parent, Sun Power. My Atlantis made it through the winter, but so far isn't looking anything like the rapid growth shown by ADD. How's that for a start???

Albo Marginata - explain please

As you probably know, albo (white) marginata (margins) is an latin descriptor... so back in the old days, they would take an species (indicated by lower case) and then describe it by adding a name... and that name might be a descriptor. So we had the fortunei species... and fortunei 'Albomarginata' (white margined) fortunei 'Aureomarginata' (gold Margins) but also fortunei 'Aoki' fortunei 'Obscura' (green sport from F. Aureomarginata) fortunei 'Gigantea' (big leaves) and so on... then Schmidt convinced folks fortunei isn't a species, so the names all changed to capitals and inside the single quotes... H. 'Fortunei Albomarginata' etc. Same thing happened with H. undulata 'Albomarginata'... it seems Undulata is also not a species, so it became H. 'Undulata Albomarginata.' Luckily, most of the other species and "species" avoided gettting the moniker albomarginata. The montana form we see most often is 'Mountain Snow' for example. Instead of H. rectifolia 'Albomarginata' we have H. rectifolia 'Chionea' and H. rectifolia 'Nakai.' But both Undulata Albomarginata and Fortunei Albomarginata were used a lot in the landscaping trade. Often FA was called "Silver Crown" (and Fortunei Aueromarginata was called "Gold Crown." but most often, when a landscaper came in and said "give me a hundred albomarinatas..." he was asking for Undulata Albomarginata. In gardens, people used the term "the white-edged one" for both... If this wasn't confusing enough... the Fortunei Albo looks a lot like a Fortunei... but Undualata Albo doesn't loork or behave a lot like the other Undulatas... in fact, it resembles in many ways - a Fortunei! So... the two look a lot alike and grow a lot alike... bloom at pretty similar time with similar pale lavender blossoms...and I've known lots of folks who claimed they could clearly tell which was which - who then frequently contradicted each other in the ID. I think the Fortunei, if left undisturbed, will get larger and have larger leaves... But walking by, I can't tell a F Albo from a U Albo from an Antioch from an... Best guess - the albomarginata you refer to is Undulata Albomarginata.

Worms in a tree will de-foliate your tree, but as with most de-foliation, not much permanent damage done. Poke a hole in the nest if they have one, and the birds and wasps will have a banquet. Leaf rollers and other such can be done in with BT, if you do it early. BT is only effective on young, small, worms. Ants are just horrible, I don't know of any thing they do that is beneficial, except to help out the buzzards to clean up carrion. They can kill your plants like txgardenlady said, by mining the soil around the roots of your plants. Worms in the ground are beneficial. Leave them alone. My MIL used to get a gallon jar, (empty) and put all the snails she found in her flowerbeds when she started cleaning them. She would often get a whole gallon of the disgusting creatures. I think she just threw the jar and all away. Some snails I know are good, and that is the long narrow snails. If they are round snails, they are dead at my house, but I leave those that look like a bullet. Wasps and Mud Daubers are good at my house. The wasps eat all kind of nasty bugs, and the Mud Daubers eat spiders, Black Widows and Brown Recluse being the most delectable. They seal them up in their nests, for the baby MDs to eat later. We KILL ants with a product called INTERCEPT. Now, they are selling it under a new name, but I don't know what it is. You put about a TBSP on the nest, stir a little and add a little water. It must make a gas, because the ants are all dead in about 5-10 minutes. Other things we tried just made them mad, or made them move. This is the only product we have ever used that actually WORKED! I would be careful if I had chickens roaming about, as they might want to eat this, and I don't know that it would be good for chickens or ducks, or whatever. Janie

'bloviate'?!? and, i don't think you need to 'have something' to have an opinion or an interest or a desire to discuss!! i think it's safe to say that all of us know people with tattoos/piercings, like people with tattoos and piercings, and many of us have loved ones with tattoos and piercings!! i personally do not know anyone very well close to my age with large, very visible tattoos- i think of small little ankle/wrist tattoos in a different way- much less of a 'commitment', more like 'pierced ears'... the friends and relatives i have who have a small dolphin, hearts, flowers, or initials, etc on their ankle or wrist or hip usually don't have much of a story or decision making process to go with it and they would not get sleeves, full leg or back tats, etc... it's a totally different commitment! the people i know with more unusual piercings or tats are much younger than me!! we know that lots of things are discussed/thought about in depth here- whether it be paint colors, toaster or mixer colors, health issues, parenting decisions, the bible, the financial crisis, etc! and we all have things that interest us more than others! there are always some who have a higher tolerance for discussing things at length(to death)! it's unfortunate that some experience hard or hurt feelings when not everyone agrees or understands.

When windows crashes it usually creates a Blue Screen error, and a dump file. This helps to find the reason for the crash.

So now you would Google Blue screen Error

zep, what you wrote is newsworthy, but failed to compute in my head, lots of gibberish, but your words about the fault being sitting in front of the computer surely did ring a bell, and even tho I don't know a lot about these fabulous machines, still have to regard that one has to care for them, like a child, at least to keep it cleaned up?
genes, thanks for the link, I read and digested that info as well, BUT what is ID 10 T usage?
I am gathering courage after many years of just emailing, and surfing the internet, and learning more; can't really call them skills, but am learning things about this machine I never could have imagined possible. Whoever "invented" this, to think ahead with all the problems and ask if you want to do this before you proceed, surely is a whiz kid.
With the followups coming along behind, sure has made this a wonderful gizmo to have, and I am grateful for your replies.

You usually hear it in a statement like 'I made an ID 10 T error'. Leave out the spaces in ID 10 T and you'll get it.

I'm sorry, I don't understand the above comment, I would rather try something, or ask a question, and tho I don't come too often, I hope I am not offending anyone by what I ask. I try to keep it simple, and not get in over my head.

I was purely refering to Zep's post and was not casting dispersions on anyone here....it was just a humorous tidbit that I had seen before..Thats what this forum is for is people to ask questions and hopefully get some assistance that works for them..
