Small Bathroom Tile/Design Questions-Long!

Hi! So, I'm brainstorming on ideas for my walls in the bathroom and I'd love some help! My house is a 1945 cabin/cottage weekend house with many renovations over the years! The major thing I've done is put a white beadboard ceiling in the kitchen, and now is time for the bathroom which currently has a rusty modular galvanized steel shower. The bathroom is 5.5 x 6.5. I'll be going with the all white look, subway tile in the tub area, white hex floor. The walls have me stumped! Originally I was thinking of the subway tile half way, but was wondering if this might look to fancy compared to the rest of the house, or get too pricey, or too hard to maintain? Was also considering tiling just behind the vanity wall to the ceiling as mentioned in another thread, or maybe putting wood boards painted white, or just tiling the tub and leaving the walls plain? Would love some suggestions! On another note, the contractor who will be doing the major work (I'll be doing the gutting and tiling btw, and am up for the challenge-I think ;) suggested installing the beadboard ceiling in the bathroom as well. My concern is will the small bath look too busy, and also is it a bad idea to have a wood ceiling in a bathroom? Sorry for the long post, -maybe some pics will help!

Hi

II donÂt know how to post a picture, but I will try to explain the layout I was thinking would work better

1st I would not put a pocket door, I think a regular door will be perfect , and the toilet should be just behind it, so when you open the door, it will block the toilet
2nd if from what I see the door is on lower left side of the picture, I would move the toilet to the lower left side corner, just across of it, or on your right side where you enter the bathroom I would install the sink, and the bath tub will be across the top of the picture where it look like there is window right now , I would also either center the window or install a similar window to his right to be even (top picture)

The are some other ideaÂs, but the all will include a regular opening door.

The tiles you select are maintained free, the do look like glazed tile, so there is no sealer needed for it, or any special care beside regular cleaning (grout will be need to seal)

Wood ceiling - well you can have it as long you got good ventilation, if you seal it good and protect it from moisture you should be ok, myself I wouldnÂt have it in my bathroom in any case

Thanks very much for your post! I agree, that layout would be really nice. Due to costs as I'm on a tight budget, I have to keep the sink and toilet pretty much where they are now. Thanks though!

That's my favorite too. I just love the turquoise. I think you need to go big or go home. Turquoise paint (like the yellow walls with grey tile picture). Turquoise main color for the rug. Turquoise with yellow and white for the shower curtain. Since you're keeping the sink and faucets, you need to work some grey in the room. I would be tempted to find the shower curtain first, and pull the colors from it. Here are a few examples. When you say no wainscotting, does that mean you are running the tile floor to ceiling? How high are your ceilings in the bath? Is this a powder room for guests? I like option #3, octogon/dot on floor. Don't know about the 3x6 subway installed vertically. As small as the room is, I'd see it horizontally and stop about 48 inches up, then paint and put something on the wall for ornamentation. If you make a "wet room"....totally tiled....with a floor drain, you'd end up with a chance to put in a shower!!! (just a thought)

I'm with your husband; the freestanding vanity design saves you from having to move plumbing and radiator to center it, and also will keep the gap from looking wierd. Indeed, the gap will look like a "I meant to do that" feature rather than a "I had to do that" feature. Having that vanity centered/uncentered is one of those things that will show up more on paper than in your real life room. That means that you'll probably notice it (because you're aware of it), but no one else ever will.

Sorry I'm so late getting back to you. I think that oddly sized fixtures can be off-putting. Many home buyers are looking for an "ideal" and they can't see past that. If the tub is well made and the bath is located where it's most needed a shorter size tub might not be a problem. If the bath will be used by children then its size is less important, but children grow into teenagers. acm voiced a concern I had about the location of this bath to nearby bedrooms. My mistake in calling it water-resistant drywall. It looks like drywall but it's better referred to as tile backer board. It's most often 1/2 inch thick but I have seen a Hardie brand backer that was only 1/4" thick and came in 3 x 5 ft. sections. HERE is a link to more info on these. There are several types with differing properties. On toilet location, I don't think "obstruction refers to the nearest wall or fixture. I think it refers to something directly in front of the toilet. Looking at your floor plan an angled toilet would not have anything in front of it. There might be room between the toilet and the vanity for a waste basket.

Actually it should not be a major change in your plumbing,

The sink will use the bath tub plumbing, ( it has drain and hot & cold water the bath tub will use the toilet plumbing ( you only need to modify the drain ) and the toilet will use the existing sink cold water, hot water will be cancel, whatÂs left is new toilet drain shouldnÂt be a big deal ( rough estimate abut $500.00)
Beside it is something DIY could do easy, with out any expensive tools.
