Master bath,shower room,powder room combo

I have a very small master bathroom and a rather large guest bathroom. These two rooms share a wall in an L shape configuration around the master closet. This closet may disappear once we figure out load bearing walls. The entire square (including the closet that may or may not stay) is about 12x15.

I'm considering a powder room that connects via a pocket door to a shower/bathing area that has another pocket door to the master sink/toliet area.

Has anyone done anything like this? It was rather popular in the 50's and early 60's. We will have a spare bedroom that would be nice to have access to a shower as visitors come to ski. I would rather have a nice shower and no tub.

Anyone done anything like that? Likes or dislikes?

Wow! This idea surely did not receive much interest, yet here I am 13 years later with the same question.

We bought a home built in 1975. The master bedroom does not connect to the adj “powder room” (for guests), but it contains separate shower and tub spaces. We could open a master closet to connect the bedroom and bath. ideally I’d like to split the space into separate powder room and shower/bath areas.

Seems people have few rules these days...why couldn’t this work? If not separate areas using a pocket door (so ‘70s!), is a shower/tub so not acceptable in a ”guest-access bathroom?

I haven't done this yet but am planning something similar--a vanity and commode as a powder room seperated from a "bath" room (tub and shower) with an additional vanity. That way, my guests won't be traipsing through all of my master bath. I'll be looking to see if any one has pros or cons on this arrangement.

I also have a similar arrangement- but mine is a little bit smaller at 15.5' X 9.25'.

We haven't begun to renovate the bathrooms yet, so I'm still at the beginning planning stage- but when I mentioned that I was thinking of opening up the guest bathroom to the master bedroom I had lots of opposition from family members, particularly my parents who said they would never buy a house that 'shared' the Master Bathroom.

We are empty nesters with an additional full bathroom in the basement- so it's not like we NEED a bathtub in our essentially guest bath- but we forsee selling and retiring within the next ten years, so resale is definitely a factor as well as making it work the best for our needs.

Do you or anyone else know if there is a site that shows layouts (as architectural drawings instead of or in addition to pictures)? I am wondering if there is a more efficient way to rearrange the positions of tub, bath and sink? I want a fairly good sized soaker tub-(my compromise is to have it in the guest bath, and have a large shower in MB) so it may work best for me not to change the walls, but if your layout is like mine, perhaps you could rearrange the 'pieces' and steal some space for your Master Bath?

Well, phooey. I taped it out in the bathroom with blue tape last night and it looked like it would fit, but with too many nos, I'm back to the drawing board. Interesting thought, Vix. Right now we don't actually have a toilet room, so much as a separate toilet "area" (there's no door, and the closet takes up too much room to add a door), but it's on my agenda to create one. In our house, it's very necessary. I generally use that bathroom to try to FIND privacy, only to have 3 people (and sometimes the dog) follow me into the bathroom. I'm looking forward to having a door that locks and a fan so that I don't have two little people handing me the TP and asking whether I'm doing number 1 or 2 (oh, and the 1 year old likes to flush while I'm ON the pot; so I've got my own special cold water washlet), while DH decides that he absolutely has to shave and brush his teeth at that exact moment. Now if I take a hike to the guest bath on the other side of the house, all three just follow me AGAIN. Sometimes when I have insisted on locking the door in the guest bath (no way to do that with our LOUVERED -- why??? -- pocket door in the master), my one year old plopped down prostrate outside the door and cried until I open the door. For my W/C, I want to put in a LOUD fan; no whisper quiet for me. Maybe I'll even add a radio. :) The way I'm seeing it, I can either get rid of the long vanity altogether and live with a fairly small vanity, plus a tub and shower, I can skip the tub and live with the kids' bathroom on the third level as the only room with a tub, or we can bump out that weird corner jog, which would give us an additional 49'' X 27'' space -- enough to fit a 5X3 tub, 5X3 shower and keep the two vanities. But that sounds very expensive and will require carefully removing and replacing the siding to match the existing. DH's response to all this was "why do we need a tub?"

Sorry, I'm a novice here and can't figure out how to upload pictures, but I'm attaching a link to photobucket. The plan that has the HUGE shower does not have an 'enclosed' toilet. There would be a half wall with decorative frosted glass above to form a translucent screen. I'm not sure this actually works because the toilet area is only 4'5 wide. The plan with the smallest shower is the plan we are working off of at the moment. The plan with the toilet room and shower bisecting the window (we would replace the window with two, one in each area) works best in plan but I'm not sure how I would like it when it was built, with a box-like cube off to the side... I think it really depends on if you are a bath person or not. Personally, when looking at houses a bath was not a “downside” unless it robbed space from a full sized shower, leaving either no shower or something the size of an old broom closet. I’d take a shower over a bath any day. All that said, I don’t take baths, and my husband who does is happy using the one in the bathroom down the hall. If you are someone who takes baths, then I would look at doing a tub/shower combo (an alcove tub like mentioned above)...you can do tile walls and even a glass enclosure to make it look a little prettier. If you have the space, or are tall, maybe see if you can put in a 6’ tub/shower? And because of your arthritis I recommend avoiding drop in/deep soaker tubs and such anyway. They can feel luxurious for sure but they are more difficult to get in and out of so that may factor in during a flare or down the road. For closet space, I ditto the recommendation to look at PAX from Ikea. I like walk in closets, but if you are going to sacrifice walk in closets I would go for PAX over a built in reach in closet. They allow a lot more flexibility with how you arrange things in your rooms, are very functional/customizable, and they look nice!

Have you considered soapstone? I am putting that into my ski house bathrooms. It looks good with the wood and is dead simple to maintain. Engineered products with a honed finish have been problematic for some.

I had wanted to do the same thing in our old house...a powder room in the hall, powder room in the master and a shared "wet" room in between. My architect nixed the idea.

I still think it's very practical if you don't have a big family or a lot of guests. (We have 3 kids so I could see why it might not be a great set up for us.)

hey @housenut1, you still noodling this idea? Here's my current design - going back and forth with architect at the moment. I hope he can make this work because it's ideal for me. Gives me more flexibility with the limited space in my master bath (powder room was an add-in for resale value, but it ate into my master)

Sorry it's a bit of a mess, but I cut up & taped the design together to suit my preferences lol.
