Free Recipe software..is there such a thing ??

I have already posted this on another forum. Just wondering if there is different opinion here.

Free software for recipes...is there such a thing?? I run a Vista X64 machine, can't seem to find good software for storing recipes.

Any Ideas? I know I sound cheap but at this point in time that's about it for me. We ( my wife & I ) have about 5000 or so recipes on an older program called meal master ..however they don't have a program that will run on a much new computer.

Thanks any help or suggestions are welcomed.

Below is a link to the program which is now free. It does not say it will run on Vista but is good for XP. So why not try installing it? At worst you will need to remove the program. At best your worries will be over.

If this is no use on Vista tell us what the 3 letter suffix is behind each recipe, this might help identify a means for you to view all these recipes.

So out of curiosity how many of these recipes have you tried? Even using one a day you have over 10 years of eating to handle LOL.

Yeah I have tried all that even to the point of trying to use a compatibly function...no go. I don't remember the file ext , if that is what your asking for as I can't open my backed up recipes on the vista.

As to having so many ..well LOL a lot has to do with our years on this green earth...we come across a recipe and try it and like it or want to try it at a future date, hence the amt that is there, plus a lot are old family ones passed down etc.

I liked the fact that I could do a search on a ingredient and and then go from there. But thanks for the thought and suggestion.

Protien is many differnt things and amounts. It add a a nearlyt pure form of protein to a jelly is not something a home canner would want to do if the jars are stored on shelves. I never have seen any commercially makde jellies, jams or other fruit spreads that contain any gelatine. Many times the USDA may not comment, but that isn't to be a way to say that is ok to use it, only that they offer no factual data. If my great grandma used it and never got sick an dthe USDA recommends it use today, an dnoone can get sick, then maybe its fine. But with home canning being as less a test in homes today, and with all the risk takers out there handed down from ancestors, I just don't feel its a justified as a defence to just post recipes that a are hand-me-downs and generations old. Who knows how many people make have been sick or died from these things as many never get reported ever. Please, just play it safe, stick to TODAYS recipes and the ones that are most recently published, researched well, and are virtually foolproof and safe for everyone. Admittedly, I am a risk taker too, but with this kind of component originating from an animal based bypoduct, we can't assume its always going to be safe for use everywhere. Gelatin was also used in surgery, lighting, and photo work. Originally Eastman was the biggest producer an user. I don't know if Eastman, or Eastman Kodak would be making jelly using gelatin?? A reduce or no sugar sprread can be MUCH easier, and MUCH SAFER to make if the proper and far safer ingredients are used. Pomona (ALSO LOW METHOXYL!! with the seperate calcium packet included) has been around a long time and is the most commonly used pectin for use in the low, no sugar jellies, jams and other thickened spreads . After that comes, modified food starches, which are now also offered to home canners by National Starch, and is commonly known as Clear Jel, and also many other more specific commercially used starches.. Its use today, as far outweighed the very negative use of flour, tapioca, regular cornstarch, or other less table thickeners.

Hi Emma--sorry to hear about your health problems, but congrats to you for deciding to change your diet and FIGHT BACK! I skipped the heart attacks (*crosses fingers*) but was diagnosed with diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol 2 1/2 years ago. At first I tried just living like I always had (I'm a Mississippi girl :) and taking the meds, but I felt awful, so I started experimenting. I bought a book called _Reversing Diabetes_, and it HAS reversed mine. I've lost 50 pounds and come off ALL my meds. You want high (complex) carbs and fiber, low fat and protien (hard on those kidneys!). SOOO--I relearned to cook by taking a favorite food and playing with it. Cornbread? It's already whole grain (especially if you don't use the cornmeal "mix"), so use fat-free buttermilk in place of whole-fat regular milk and just spray your skillet with some olive oil in a spritzer. You'll still get the crispy crust, but with LOTS less bad stuff. As Ruthieg says, go a bit at a time. Soon you'll not only automatically make the healthy changes, but you'll actually LIKE the food better. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

You can (sorta) "create" low-lactose several ways.... #1. Our adult son and now our granddaughter are both lactose intolerant and have used a low-lactose whey-based milk substitute called Morning Moo's (www.moosmilk.com) for many years. I make homemade pudding mixes with it, use it as a substitute for evaporated milk by making it "double" strength. I use the dry powder in mashed potatoes for really extra fluffy mashed potatoes. I add the powder to potatoes boiled in a small amount of water to make potato soup. I make flavored cocoa mixes using the dry powder and flavored non-dairy creamer powders, but it also comes in a chocolate flavor. This particular whey-based milk substitute has the best flavor of these types of whey-based products - nearly like milk. It's inexpensive per gallon when you purchase it in large bulk quantities (24.25# bucket - or larger). Our son (almost 31) has used a whey-based milk substitute "milk" since he was 4 years old on the advise of a pediatrition. Yes, there is some lactose, but most people who are lactose intolerant can consume low levels of lactose without any problems. #2. Another point to know... There is a percentage of lactose in dairy products (see link below). As a general rule of thumb, the higher the fat content the lower the lactose. The longer a cheese has aged, the lower the lactose. That's why most people who are lactose intolerant don't have any problems with consumption (in low to moderate amounts) of things like butter (0.8-1.0%) or cream. There's very little lactose in it. #3. Fermentation also alters the lactose. I make homemade kefir (using almost any kind of milk), and it reduces the lactose to a very low, very digestible, level. I use homemade kefir as a substitute for buttermilk and use it in our smoothies everyday (along with some kind of 100% fruit juice - 50/50 and other additions like flax meal, etc.). The longer you ferment the kefir, the thicker the curd gets. You can drain the thick curd like you would yogurt for yogurt cheese, and depending on how long it drains, I use it as a substitute for plain yogurt, cream cheese, sour cream, and even a cottage cheese type product. Do a Google search for - Dom's Kefir Insite - for more information about kefir. #4. Keep Coffee-Mate Single-Serve Portions (the size used for individual use in coffee/tea) on hand (I can get a box of 50 at Wal-Mart). They are lactose FREE and don't require refrigeration. Perfect for adding to oatmeal - as I found out during a recent ice storm when we were without electricity for an extended period of time. I could make instant oatmeal with water heated on our camp stove, and added the liquid from 2-3 creamers to the oatmeal. Start by combining the yeast and sugar in a small bowl (I use the smallest in my set of three nested mixing bowls). Add the water while gently stirring the yeast and sugar. Let this mixture sit while you mix the rest of the ingredients - bubbles and foam should form if the yeast is happy. 2. Combine the flour mix, xanthan gum and salt in the largest mixing bowl and stir well. 3. In a third bowl, whisk the eggs, oil and vinegar until the eggs are a bit frothy. 4. Yes an excellent open source free one which I think works with all windows versions.

Have you tried a web based service like MyCookbook: www.mycookbook.com

MyCookbook is free recipe software that is all browser based. You don't have to download or install anything.

Just a thought. Hope that helps!

I run a Vista X64. I use Gourmet Recipe Manager. I have run into one small "glitch". When I close the prgram I get an error message " Gourmet Recipe Manager has stopped working, Windows is searching for a solution to this problem." if I wait a sec. a second message appears. " A problem caused the program to stop working correcctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." No notification appears. I just disreguard the notices and close the program at first notification and every thing else seeem to work just fine. I don't know if it this is caused by something that occured during the download of the program, or if it is the fact that this is a VistaX64. I have had a compatibilty problem with 1 or 2 older programs. For example My Seagate Free Agent external drive works fine, but I cannot install the Seagate Manager part of the program. Checking with Seagate- they have no plans to make this model compatible with the X64. C'la vie, I can work around it.

Free recipe cards for download.
You can download zip files of the recipe cards from the first three series. To do this:
1. Right-click on one of the links.
2. Click on "Save Target As" from the menu that appears.
3. Choose where you'd like the file to be saved.
You can also download the individual recipes as separate PDF files. Either way you'll need the free Adobe Reader to view the cards (many computers have this already).

Just a thought...
Is your old Meal Mgr. program from the same co. as the Meal mgr program mentioned by "owbist", Episoft?
If so perhaps contact them ( link at bottom of their download page) and explain the problem. They may have a solution. Perhaps they can tell you the extension of the recipe files.

Do you have the recipes/program on a disk that could be run on an older machine? If so,try it on another pc.
If the program is anything like GoumetRecipeManager- I can export the recipes to a Document folder ( in GRM they become Adobe files- at least on my PC, easy to copy and paste into document form) Once exported they can be copied to a disk and then put on your Vista. Cumbersome, but it could work.

For ordinary storage of recipes, use MS Word and store as document files, same as letters.

But, if you are seeking a way to enter a base recipe, and then resize the quantity, try a spread sheet such as Excel.
Enter the ingredient in the first column; enter the base amount in the 2nd column; and then set up several more columns that are muntiples of base.

If it bugs you to see so many columns of data, especially columns that you are not using in a particular session, use the 'hide/unhide' feature. In Excel, move the mouse pointer to the column header and click to highlight. You can highlight a set of columns by holding the mouse button down and sliding the pointer across columns. With the columns selected, go to 'format' and in the drop down menu, select 'hide column'. The column(s) will stay hidden until 'unhidened'. To unhide, hold down the mouse button and sweep across where the missing columns would be, and then in the 'format' drop down menu, select 'unhide'.

The hidden columns will not print.

Making use of a spread sheet and its features can eliminate the need for special software. The multipliers for the columns don't have to be intergers (1, 2, ...), these can be anything you desire for example, 1.5; 2.25; 10.6; etc.
