Formspring? Are you familiar with it?

This could probably be a spin off from the appropriate TV show thread...

It seems Formspring is drawing a number of teens as a looser, less structured Facebook, MySpace, social network site. I have not investigated, but our middle school PTO warned that it is probably not appropriate for our kids and I was curious how many people here are familiar with it, or know someone who is.

My nephew (19) has a formspring page. It is not for the weak of heart. Basically, what his page is, is a question and answer page. People anonymously ask very personal questions, make nice comments, or not so nice ones. I think the danger is that the user feels compelled to answer all of the questions. Some he answers with a "haha", but most he actually answers truthfully, brutally truthfully. The anonymous aspect is really what bothers me because it allows people to hide behind mean comments. Not sure if he just allows anonymous questions or if he can block it. I can see this as potentially deadly to less mature kids. It could really crush self esteem in no time at all. My nephew is a confident and outgoing guy, and also a self proclaimed addict to the site. He is always asking people on his fb account to "formsprimg me". Its been likened to crack. I would not want my kids on it because I would hate for someone to say mean things about them.

Libtickle - you worked for a wonderful manufacturer. We purchased three queen beds (one Louis Philippe, one Castle, and one Canopy bed) - all cherry; Louis Philippe nightstands, a triple dresser, 3 double dressers (1 for wife, 1 for each daughter, haha). We were incredibly impressed by the by the classic beauty of the Louis Philippe line. We upgraded to a King mattress 5 years ago and I've been hunting for the King Sleigh Bed nationwide. Funny thing, it came up on Craigslist in my hometown with the Louis Philippe Armoire and one nightstand that matched what we had originally purchased. For us, our daughters have made it very clear that it is ALL heirloom furniture and we are not to sell at any time, for any price. National Mt. Airy stood out for us when we visited High Point, we love our bedroom suites - y'all built memorable furniture that will last our family for generations!

I've only ever used SW Harmony when painting myself (for a newly finished basement a few years ago--primer and 2 coats of paint during middle of winter and the lack of smell was great!). Not having had previous painting experience before, I don't have anything to compare it against, but I thought Harmony was easy to work with and looked great (after getting great painting technique tips here and the hgtv forum). Now I have a question....I think I used a satin in the Harmony line. Is Duration Matte less shiny than that? In our new house, the bldr painted everything flat, and I already have places that need wiping/cleaning, but I can't. I need to start re-painting some rooms, and also need a low sheen because I don't think the drywallers did a very good job in sanding the seams in a couple of rooms. Thanks!

When I was little we would go there for a week to camp every few years. There was very little resources on the island, up north were a few homes but other than that it was bare campsites in the sand and paths out to the ocean. There were cold shower facilities and that was it. A ferry took people over twice a week, Weds or Sat. The Carnegies owned a lot of the land, and the remains of the ruins of Dungeness Mansion can be explored. The manse burned in a fire in 1959 and is now just the stone carcass, overgrown with weeds and vines. JFK Jr. gt married in a little church there. I remember seeing armadillos and wild horses all over the islands. The "roads" were made of sand dredged from the south end of the island which is a shark dying ground. We would sit in the road and sift through sand for hours collecting dozens of shark teeth. Has anyone else ever been there and what memories do you have of it?

My favorite is Edgartown, try to see the historic old villages there that are incredibly beautiful. Little houses with a vast amount of gardens and ocean views. Easy to walk. This year we happened to hear some singing coming from a certain direction and it was beautiful so we walked over and found an outdoor church that would hold so many people. We were invited in and listened to music for half an hour. It was glorious. Buses can take you to any part of the vineyard and the driver usually knows where to direct you. Have a wonderful time.

I agree, it does sound like an online slam book. Those things were horrendous!

I think I'd steer my kids clear of a site like that.

funny "formspring" should be mentioned, we just got a complaint from a parent that their kid was being "cyber bullied". How? On "formspring". Fortunatly, I'd read this thread so I kind of knew what "formspring" was.

I'd keep my kids to heck away from it.
