Replacing a central vacuum powerhead

I need to get a new power head for my Hayden supervac 6000 central vacuum. I have done a little research and the MD Stealth 11 powerhead seems to be rating itself as the best available, but it is pretty expensive. The powerhead + accessories cost about $575.00. I have also considered the Powercat power nozzle which is about half the price. We have a lot of pet hair and two kids. Time is limited because I work outside the home and want to spend as little time as possible cleaning my house. Can anybody offer some advice or suggestion(s)?

But why do you need to buy the whole kit? You can get an 14"Imperium power head, made by Lindahus for $250. I'm using this with my Nutone system, and it's great. If you shop around, you might be able to find it for less. (On the page linked below, scroll down almost to the bottom for the Imperium power head.)

I just spent an hour doing a message for your purchase of a new power nozzle 4 your system. My wife has something 4 work which runs and it is lost. I have all of the H, Stealth, Wessel-Werks, and, the Turbo-Cat. That is the air driven thing, 4 half the price. Forget that 1!! Just send me an email at steve1511@comcast.net At least, I know, I won't B wasting my time, and not have it killed by something that just comes on and erases everthing I type.

I collect vacs, and have installed CV in the last 3 homes. I have all of the 1's that U R considering, so Just ask.

My builder gave us a Dirt Devil Pro Series 990 central vac system with the Edge powerhead cleaning kit and I absolutely love it. I was very leary of a Dirt Devil unit becaues their residential uprights & canisters are terrible in terms of quality. However, their central vac systems are made by HP who also makes Vacuflo units. Granted, mine isn't a true cyclonic system as there is a filter cartridge which must be replaced annually for about $25. However, even after 8 months of HARD use, I haven't noticed a decrease in suction at all. I have emptied the canister twice..which isn't fun...but neither was emptying my old Dyson everytime I cleaned. I'd install one again with no reservations. My parents have a ten year old MD Silentmaster central vac system that they love as well. Definitely choose a power unit that is sized for a home larger than yours and invest in an electric powerhead. I'm having a HAH outlet installed in my kitchen to tackle all the wood floors on the main level of my home but would be at a loss without the Edge powerhead. Good luck!

Another vote for Vacu-Flo! Get a unit that is more powerful than you need, and you will really love it! It has an exhaust that sends fine dust particles out side, so emptying the canister is not dusty. The unit I have is very easy to empty as well. Ditto using the website to find a dealer/installer. You will likely get better pricing that using your GC and his electrician, and the work quality will be better because CV is all they do! My electrician wanted over 5K to install a system with 10 inlets. By shopping around, I was able to get a vacu-flo rated for a 12.000sf house with 11 inlets for about $3K. I can tell you it has been worth every penny! My kids are big allergy sufferers and we've had a dramatic decrease in their symptoms. I love just snapping in a hose and going! I did not do the hide a hose feature, but my vacu-flo dealer offered it. As cost was a factor, my priorities were a powerful unit and well spaced inlets. I have two hose sets and keep one on each floor, so it's really no big deal to just get the hose out of the closet. Good luck. With the right system, central vac is a dream.

After living with Hide-A-Hose for 5 months, I would highly recommend it. I still use my Dyson cordless every day but for larger jobs or when the Dyson isn't charged, I love the HAH. It's fairly quiet and does a great job. One thing I would highly recommend is a walk-through with the vacuum installer/supplier. My contractor didn't give me any info so I had a few issues with the system. I called the installer and he answered all my questions, showed me some tips and how to use the system. It's not a complicated system at all but a few simple things (like leaving the system unlocked at all times except when in use) made all the difference in the world. The installer said that some contractors just take the accessories and give them to the home owner with no real knowledge of how to properly use the system and it causes issues such as broken cover plates ($200 to replace) and general frustration.

We have an MD central vac system in our home. Love it. Previous owners didn’t hook anything up to the piping that was installed when the house was built, so we bit the bullet and bought two hoses (we have a two story) and one power head. We also bought a fabric “sleeve” for each hose, and have had zero issues with any wall dings. Hose is not light but it is lighter than hauling a vacuum cleaner around. I’m in my mid 70’s and have zero issues moving the hose around or taking the power head up and down the stairs.

The turbo nozzles are not going to be as effective as an electric-powered nozzle. An electric power nozzle is going to be better at picking up animal hair. There are even going to be some power nozzles that will perform better than others. Why are you looking for a new power nozzle? Is your present one in need of repair? Or, do you just want something different? What do you think of your present power nozzle?

First, I would suggest that you only purchase the power nozzle and continue using the other attachments from your present system. Second, if you cannot afford an expensive purchase, then look to some less expensive models of power nozzles other than the Stealth(Lindhaus). There are Hayden models, Nutone models, Centec models and Imperium. Alot of these brands are using the same power nozzle design that originated as Whirlpool or later model Panasonic.

You want to make sure that you are getting a power nozzle that uses a cogged or nonslip poly-V belt, because you want consistant power at the brushroll.

You can find a very good power nozzle for about $150-$200. Then they go up from there.
