Best monitor for senior citizen

The color is almost gone from my 6 year old CRT monitor. I tried another monitor and the color was good so I know it isn't my video card. I've done alot of reading but am still confused as to the best monitor to get in regards to ease of reading text.

I wish I could buy another CRT but that seems next to impossible. I'm not sure I want widescreen which also seems to be the most common. I do want either a 19" or 21" monitor.

My screen resolution is set to 800 by 600. I understand LCD's can't have their resolutions changed. What do I buy in order to keep with the 800x600?

I think you can set any resolution you want up to the maximum supported by your monitor. I can set 800x600 on my notebook, don't like it but I can see it could be helpful for weak eyesight..which I have, but not that weak.

Ginny have you tried looking for some buttons under the front edge of your monitor? Sometimes it is difficult to see them and it might be possible that at some point when cleaning your monitor you moved one or more of these. Take a look and see if you can find them to adjust your colour or contrast.

Perhaps you have onscreen controls, you would need to post the make and model number of the monitor or Google them for information on adjusting colour and/or contrast

When my mother turned 70, we gave her a surprise party and wrote and performed a little musical of her life. She definitely loved that! But our family is into stuff like that. Yours may be more into art, writing, etc. For my 50th birthday, my husband contacted everyone he could think of and asked them to contribute a little anecdote for an album. He put photos in the back. I adore it. I recently did a "this is your life" slide show for a party honoring someone. Her family gave me photos. But in addition to the real photos from her life, we put in lots of downloaded photos with her face photoshopped in (always the same photo of her face, and always just a little too large). For example, when the narration was about her meeting and marrying her husband, there were a few of the two of them together, and then her with Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Homer Simpson, King Kong ... etc. It was really funny to think of things; she is a VERY refined and elegant lady, and we had her getting a tattoo, pole dancing, in a motorcycle gang, on a Tabloid cover, in the Sopranos -- like that. What made it funny was that we kept the narration perfectly straight and played very formal music behind it. It was very well received, and the guest of honor loved it. Do you think your mom might like something like one of these ideas? I, too, think I would prefer something like that to making the guests play games. I think it is so nice of you to make a party for your mother. You don't need to "program" every minute with games, though -- your mom's friends will enjoy socializing with each other.

Not knowing whether or not a financial Power of Attorney has been conferred, I'd be hesitant to recommend taking the responsibility of discharging another's debt. What would that mean? Paying out of your own pocket? Sign her checks for her? You can't legally sign another's checks without the granted power to do so. Perhaps the least intrusive and easiest thing would be to have her son's name added to her checking account. Even though my brother had my Mother's financial POA and took charge of asset management, etc., I had the responsibility of keeping up with the everyday things. I simply had my name added to her checking account when she was beginning the slide into Alzheimer's and getting farther and farther removed from taking care of her affairs. I seem to recall it was nothing more than a quick visit to the bank, signing a paper providing my SS#, etc. and ordering a new set of checks. I also understand what it is to try and engage a senior in other activities - sometimes it's just not in the cards. Either they're not joiners by nature or as they age there's a certain fear in trying new things that are a little outside of their comfort zone. My Mother gave up playing golf with the local ladies league at age 85 and we never could come up with something/anything even remotely close to replacing the enjoyment she got from that. From what the OP has written, it does seem her MIL is just aging and that bad habits are becomming magnified; she doesn't quite recognize her spending habits as unusual or that she's being taken advantage of by her sister. It might not be any one of the dementias one could put their finger on right now. It could be in the future.

For all my old pets I give subcutaneous fluids at least once a week. Most of my older dogs and cats have had some degree of kidney insufficiency in their later years and hydration alleviates the nausea associated with it and perks up their appetites. I believe this has extended most of their lives, but more importantly it keeps them comfortable. Probably of all the things I've done to help my senior pets, this has made the most improvement to their lives. My older cats enjoy(ed) their heating pad covered with a towel. In or near their 20s, they have all lost weight and it was/is harder for them to generate enough of their own body heat to stay warm. I have a 4 foot wide gradually sloping ramp that I built so that my old dogs do not have to climb stairs to get in and out of the back door into the yard. I covered it in that fake grass indoor/outdoor carpetting so that it is not slippery. It is tough stuff and I can scrape snow and ice off it without harming it. For my collie in the last months of his life (He had an inoperable tumor in his abdomen that I believe caused him to be incontinent) I wrapped his beds with plastic tarps and covered that with washable and comfy fleece blankets. (His beds were 2" thick blocks of dense upholstery foam that I had made for him when his arthritis made it too hard for him to get up on the couch.) When he slept urine would just run out of him, so I could just change his blanket and sponge off the waterproof tarp-covered bed with soap and water. I had about half a dozen blankets that I would just throw in the washer everyday. It was a system that was easy for me and comfortable sleeping for him. Likewise my last two cats in their 20s were "leaky" when they slept. I lined all of their beds with plastic waterproof tablecloths, cut to fit. Then I covered that with soft cloths made from old towels and old clothes that were disposable. I affixed the disposable bedding to their beds with masking tape that I could tear off the next day. I had boxes of discarded fabric items cut into cat-bed-sized linens. When the supply began to run low I bought a box of hospital pads and used those. When my dogs were very old their appetites waned. I home cook for all my pets, and I cooked only those foods that they liked the best in their last days, because it was most important for them to eat to keep up their strength and to get adequate nutrition. Poultry was a favorite, and I cooked many a 25 lb turkey back then. Toward the end it was too hard for my guys to stand to eat a meal, so I hand fed them so they could eat lying down. For my dogs, glucosamine/chondroitin and fish oil capsules have helped their arthritis noticably. Eventually old age gets the upper hand, but these remedies stave off the crippling effects of arthritis for some time. I hope some of these suggestions will help you with your older pets. I find it very rewarding to care for my pets in their later years. There are so many ways to make their lives more comfortable, and to provide them with contentment. They appreciate the extra care and enjoy this phase in their lives, even though their world and activities have shrunk from what they once were. And now that I, too, am old I can empathize even more with the difficulties they have, and instinctively take steps to alleviate them.

Thank you all for the well wishes and cute answers. I loved them all but think I'll stick with Moni's.....more experienced! Loved your story, Glenda...........my doctor once asked me how long I planned to live. Friends were startled by that question but it was in context with a question about my knee. I told her I had to hang in there at least until 85 because I have a dog that needs me. She said my knee would outlast me. LOL I had an extended wonderful birthday. My daughter surprised me with a party on my birthday....I didn't even expect her to be in town.....she's been gone all summer and my son flew in from California just for the party, had to leave the next day because he just started a new job. Thursday I was going out to dinner with my birthday group. We normally do lunches but milestones warrant dinners. When I got to my favorite restaurant, there were all my favorite golfing buddies waiting to celebrate with me. So it was a fun filled birthday. And best of all, I finally gave in and got a cleaning woman. I told myself I would get one when I turned 70 but that came and went and then I said 75 and that came and went, so finally I took the leap.

you should be able to find plenty used crt monitors I have several stacked up here I have no use for, and all the small fix it computer shops around here have stacks of them they basically give away they are so cheap, no one wants them so just check around I promise you there are plenty of them out there.

I have an Acer 19" LCD monitor that I love, I have very bad eye sight, am legally blind with out my contacts or glasses, I am able to set up this monitor to exactly how I want it. Plus I use firefox as my browser and have an add-on that makes it change the size of everything on the page with the touch of a button. The resolution for the monitor usually depends on what size you get. Mine is 1280x1024, it is not a widescreen.

I have a Dell Trinitron monitor and the controls are in the front. I have adjusted them but the colors remain faded and very faded....

I understand monitors do wear out although I think they can last longer than 6 years.

have you tried adjusting your colors settings in the pc? right click on a clear spot on the desktop then choose properties and go to the settings tab then under color quality you can change the settings there and there is a troubleshooting button you can try and there is an advanced button there also, try giving some of those a try but be sure you write down what it was set on first so you can go back if you should need to.

definitely should last longer than 6 years especially a name brand one like that. I have monitors that are still working fine that are much much older than that.
I tell you where I saw a bunch of them for just a couple dollars each was at the Salvation ARmy and Goodwill stores. Also craigslist for your area.

My LCD has no distortion at all, you can change the dpi settings also if you need bigger fonts etc to be able to read. I have mine set up to fill my entire screen, it takes a little fiddling with it but I have my LCD set up just like my crt was but it is much easier for me to view in my opinion. I had to hook up one of my old crt monitors to work on another pc and I could not believe how hard it was to look at the old monitor, I sure was glad I did not have to go back for long. Now I want a bigger LCD like a 22 or 24" would be nice! Prices are coming down so much now they are so affordable.

I have tried making adjustments in the way you mentioned (right click on desktop etc.) No change. Thank you for your ideas. I so much appreciate you (all) taking the time to help me out on this.

I had a lot of eye strain when I first started using a PC and soon learn to buy a larger monitor and set the fonts larger. My nephew laughed at the size of my fonts, but so what. It means I can sit longer at my PC without having eye strain. My doctor said it's like driving a long time, a fixed stare and it dries the eyes.

My screen setting is 1024 x 768 on a LCD 17 inch monitor. As long as the Display settings in Windows will support the screen choice you can change it.
