Samsung or Electrolux side by side refrigerator?

I'm down to the final stages here with planning my kitchen remodel. I've read and searched and read some more, all through this forum and have been helped so much by all the information here. Taking into consideration our budget, our neighborhood, ROI, etc, we've decided on a GE Cafe range, a Faber 30" range hood, a Bosch dishwasher, and the last decision is the fridge. I definitely want a counter depth SxS and the kids (4 of them, only 2 who actually have an opinion yet) want ice and water in the door. Hence, I've decided against a FD b/c I don't like all the space lost in the fridge due to the ice maker.

The Elextrolux EI23CS55GS... Pros: Fully adjustable and slide out shelves, ice maker in the freezer compartment makes ice faster, like the layout of the drawers in the freezer. Cons: Ice maker in the freezer compartment seems to take up more space, fridge shelves are NOT spill-proof.

The Samsung RSG257AARS... Pros: Twin cooling system, spill proof shelves, tower light, good freezer space, cheaper than the Electrolux. Cons: Ice maker on the door gives it a rep for being slow with making ice, shelves don't slide out, shelves can't be repositioned.

Anyone have any experience with either of these? I read somewhere on here a reference to problems with Elextrolux freezing compartments, but couldn't find any specifics.

Hello Julie, There have been tons of posts on problems with the Electrolux freezers and Fridges. Alto I have the Electrolux Icon Speed oven, Convection Oven and Induction cooktop, as well as their wine fridge,(and all trouble free for 3 years now), I myself would stay away from their fridges and freezers, at least till we start to hear better things on their newer models. I bought a Jenn-air 48" Side by side Integrated (Paneleled) threee years ago, and it had been trouble free--alto doesnt set the world on fire with it's icemaking capabilities. Enough for the 2 of us, but have much company, I would have to buy a bag or 2 of ice.
It probably makes about 2 batches of ice in 24 hours.

Samsung. With 4 years at top of the pack in JD is hard to ignor. Samsung has been able to beat the others in getting the most cubic feet in the same dimensioned units. The Side by side shows this remarkably. Kitchen Aid has one but it is 72" tall. I am going for the FD version with the ice and water. I never owned a SS, but I hear too often about how narrow they are, so I have fears of not being able to put a sheet cake or tray in there. I feel the ice maker in the fridge is better than giving up room in the freezer. With kids and Costco trips, freezer space is important.

The dealers that sell Samsung have all good comments about them. I find the only dealers bashing them are the ones that do not sell them. Not sure why they do not sell them, they must not be able to get the approval to sell the line?

I was never happier to be rid of my side by side. I never used any of the space below about halfway down because we would never remember it was there and it was too hard to clean and nothing ever fit in it. I really did not like it. The freezer side same thing, anything low was not remembered. But then everyone is different. I so much appreciate the extra wide tray accommodation as we entertain a lot and it really comes in handy. I have a KA without ice/water in the door. I didn't want it and do not miss it either. We use ice a LOT and I like just scooping it up in one big scoop and putting in a glass or pitcher. If I could have my choice of refrigerator configuration I would want a single door upper with drawer on the bottom. I don't really like dealing with the double doors on the FD and seem to put everything on one side of the fridge. It's only my husband and I so it's fine but a little extra aggravation at times. The trade off for me is having all the refrigerated items at eye level, I just love that so much and I can't even tell you how much I love the extra width of the deli tray. While it's not perfect I would never go back to a sxs. IMHO they seem prehistoric to me now.

samr: thanks for the response. we are considering model ew30ds65gs (range) and ew26ss65gs (refrigerator). I think I saw the same fridge in your kitchen pics. How do you like it? I read another thread on the electolux icon products, which really slammed electrolux, and I became a little worried about purchasing their products. By the way, how long ago did you purchase the items? we are also considering the miele optima g2470scvi dishwasher, if you have any thoughts on it. thanks again.

I don't see anybody jumping in, so maybe I can help get a conversation started for you. GE had pretty significant reliability and parts problems with its fridges when it started contracting out (outsourcing), but it has brought much of its production back to the US a few years ago. CR's survey data shows that GE is now no less (and no more) reliable than most other brands of SxS models. In our area, GE also cut back on the number of dealers it works with and seems to be concentrating on the highest-volume retailers and big-box stores. Some friends bought one of the large new GE SxS models a month or so ago -- I think it is the one rated for 29 cut. ft. -- and say they are very pleased with its features and capacity. Something to else to bear in mind is that rated capacity is often overstated. Supposedly 25 to 28 cu. ft. SxS fridges sometimes turn out to have no more than 18 cu. ft. of actual capacity. Capacity is affected by the size of the through-the-door ice and water dispensers and some of the larger capacity models have two ice makers. If memory serves, CR rated the Whirlpool and Samsung SxS models as having more usable capacity than other brands with similar capacity claims. Samsung models have separate evaporators for the freezer and fridge compartments. Not the same as having completely separate compressors and cooling systems (ala Sub Zero) but still something of a marketing leg up because of the theoretical advantages. When I was fridge shopping, it seemed that the jury was still out on whether the separate evaporators made much practical difference. Doesn't the biggest Samsung SxS have an external display screen that connects to the internet or you smart phone or displays photos or something? Strikes me one more thing to fail. cascade to other circuitry and interfere with the primary functions. FWIW, some friend have had a Samsung 26 cu. ft. mtrot I don’t know the answer. I try to ask. When I go to private appliance stores I have pulled out my cell phone to look up the model number and it’s reviews and they (salesmen) are insulted. To dig deep you have to know the serial number as well. You look at the serial number on the compressor because if you were to replace the compressor or if the company were to replace the compressor the serial number would change. There are other refrigerators that have bad compressors too. Somewhere on here or on HOUZZ, never sure where I am, there is a large group that talks about refrigerators and you get on there some appliance people who repair refrigerators and they will tell you. Some owners have the ability to fix them. The biggest problem is water. Ice cubes flying out; water not going into the cup. That doesn’t seem to change but I do look to see how old the reviews are. It’s difficult because when you get a review from someone who just bought theirs in 2018 or 2019 and they say oh it’s just beautiful and we like it then that’s not helpful either because they have not witnessed the oncoming problems. There are no reviews that say that we have had it for 10 years and nothing has happened. I think the countries that make these appliances hate America. The site with lots of participation has one title which is “I know I shouldn’t have done it but I bought a Samsung refrigerator and I regret it .” That woman was a great spokes person because we were all together and I was watching each other‘s posts and she had just bought it and we were concerned. Then she wrote back and said that. Samsung is so expensive and looks good but is full of troubles including trying to find someone who will repair it. The Samsung office is rude is not helpful. I have made another rule for myself. If a refrigerator is on sale then I shouldn’t buy it or consider it. If word gets out that there is a very good refrigerator that will never go on sale. It’s like when I bought a speed queen dryer. You could not find one that was made in 2017 that had very good reviews. I ended up finding one that I thought was made in 2018. Brand new configuration. What I really had was one made in 2016.

The Samsung FD has 23 cubic feet with the external ice/water. None other gets this cubic feet with no dimensions. If they do, it will not have the ice maker in the door.

I just got my Samsung FD 28 cubic foot (with ice and water in door) delivered yesterday and love it so far. I just replaced a 9 yr old Whirpool Gold side by side and would never recommend a side-by side to anyone. The space is way too small. I was torn about SS vs white but since my DW and oven are white, I went with white and it is beautiful.I don't have little ones but there is a child proof lock on digital display as well as a chime/door alarm. There is a huge freezer on bottom with 2 drawers and deep bins on door of fridge. The shelves slide out,one flips up and one slides in half under the other which is so cool. I don't feel that the ice maker takes up too much room in fridge but then again, my kids are not living home anymore so there is less food to stock. The lights inside are great. Sofar I would recommend this one as it is same dimension as the 25 cf but they were able to make it larger inside by using compressed insolation - or so I am told.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and comments. I think side by sides are one of those things that you either love them or you hate them. My past two fridges have been bottom mount freezers and I definitely like them. But at this stage, with 4 kids, I was looking to have something that the kids could access themselves. Right now, my older two, who are the only two that can help themselves, have to climb up into the fridge just to get out the milk or a yogurt cup or something. But, I should also add that our current fridge, while a hideous monstrosity, still functions just fine and will take up a new home in the garage right next to the chest freezer. So, we do still have plenty of storage for large items. I mean, really, there's no need to have 3 gallons of milk in the house at one time, is there? ;) Two could easily be kept in the garage. Thanks, again. I didn't know about the JD rating of the Samsung, and with your comments, I think I'm definitely leaning that way.
