Layout questions for 7.5 x 8 hall bathroom with sit down vanity

Our family bath will be approximately 7.5 feet wide and 8 feet deep. We think we are going to put a 5 foot vanity on the left then the toilet. On the right will be a closet and the tub. My question is how should I configure the vanity? My daughter really wants a sit down space to do her makeup and hair. Any suggestions on how to lay this out? If we do this we will have a cabinet built into the back wall beside of the toilet for towels and storage.

To help with layout questions it really helps to have a diagram that shows the location of any doors, windows, existing plumbing, exterior walls, etc.

If remodeling or new construction, any added info can help.

I donÂt know if I can add anything to a discussion about the actual layout of the bathroom, because I would have to see a diagram of it to be able to comment intelligently. However, I am constantly looking for vanity concepts for the blog site I maintain with a fellow woodworker, and just this morning, coincidentally enough, I posted a blog on a fairly new product line from Kohler. They have come up with a wonderful idea for a whole line of bathroom fixtures, the heart of which is a vanity that seems like it would almost exactly fit your needs. IÂve posted a link to that blog at the bottom of this, if youÂre interested.

A bathroom the size of yours does allow for extra large items, as opposed to the five by nine bathrooms we have in our home! But, even so, you donÂt have anything like unlimited space, which is what I found especially appealing about this particular line. Actually, they even have a smaller vanity that would fit into my postage stamp bathroom! But the whole line, as I said, is designed to conserve space while doing something nice and elegant. They even have a vanity stool with a built-in trash container! And room to slide it under the counter when itÂs not in use.

neici, You're welcome. I enjoy doing stuff like this and glad if I can help somehow. On the 1st drawing you could put the shower door on the toilet side wall, or you could use a curtain. It just happens that we have a bathroom like this with a curbless shower and shower curtain. The shower fixtures are on the south wall of our shower. Course, you could modify this and cut that corner off (the SE corner) and use that as your entry into the shower and move the plumbing fixtures...you could add a shower bench. There are really nice frameless glass shower doors that hinge on a wall. Also, have you considered pocket doors for an entry door? A pocket door requires double the space of the door size to slide into a wall though so I don't know if that might work without knowing more details about your home plan. But you wouldn't have to worry about door swing then. About storage. You can have recessed cabinets. We are in the middle of a bathroom remodel that seems like it's been going on forever, but we are building a 2' by 4' tall recessed storage cabinet. It is standard 4" depth. We also built a double wall behind my vanity area so I can have an extra deep medicine cabinet. It will be 45" wide and 30" tall and we are putting an electric outlet inside for chargeable things like electric toothbrush, etc. There are lots of ways to get storage by using the space in the wall. I am also building a recessed tiled niche for 2 towel bars beside my storage cabinet. My bathroom is only 6' wide by almost 12': but no matter what size you can never have enough storage!:) I drew a few more drawings for you to consider. I put in a pedestal sink. It is 2'wide. There are multiple options if you want to put in a furniture type linen closet. On the bottom drawing I put in 1' x 1' squares. Sorry if it makes it look confusing... and one more.

Houseful, I'm overwhelmed! You're so nice to help me with this! What program are you using to generate these, BTW? I talked to my contractor last night and he says that if I put the shower in the front corner (behind the hall door) that I will be able to have a curbless shower. (That area is currently a closet and is a few inches lower than the rest of the bathroom because it doesn't have the big mud bed like the tile bathroom has. ) At first I was loving the first of the two most recent options but then I realized that if someone is standing at the sink closest to the potty it interferes with getting to / using the potty. I am leaning towards having the vanity straight along the left wall, the potty in the back corner on the right, and a big shower behind the door. I liked the size and shape of the 3rd option at the very top, so I tried putting that behind the door and it seems to work nicely. I think it gives me about 3' clearance between the closest point between the vanity and the shower. Is that good? Thanks again for everything! Anita

I have truly appreciated all your help in getting our project off the ground. Although it is the holiday tomorrow, we haven’t heard from our architect since last Thursday. We originally engaged our architect in February, and it will have been 5 months in the design phase of a 500 sf addition, which basically adds a master bed and bath. For context, it was supposed to take 4 weeks to get through design and on to construction documents. Instead, it has taken us 5 months. It took 4 weeks to provide an initial 2-story design which we liked, then 4 weeks to realize that he hadn’t accounted for the city setback and redesign a 2-story we didn’t like, 3 weeks to deliver a 1-story design without a setback (but that didn’t have a layout that worked), 2 weeks to redraw a drawing that I sent over. I pretty much thought we were done on May 25 and off to construction documents, but used all the extra time this past month to get the bathroom right. Is this typical of the design process? It seems to be taking longer than anticipated, given the scope of work. I still don't think we are on to construction documents, and he indicated this could take another 3 weeks. Appreciate your thoughts on whether this experience is common.

Home Depot is the only place within two hours that sells the pre-fab, and the colors are horrible. I need three bathroom countertops, and the largest is 52". I should be able to find remnants, but I can't even find fabricators who have remnants. Nobody has a website and the fabricators don't advertise, at all. I found six places in Tulsa, but none of them have quartzite remnants. I can only find stone suppliers. I will make a list of suppliers this weekend, and call them on Monday. Maybe they have a list of fabricators near me. Even Google maps didn't have anyone listed near me. They didn't have the two fabricators that are a half hour away from me. What is your opinion on glossy vs honed in a bathroom. My kitchen has leathered Sea Pearl quartzite, and I love it. I prefer matte colors usually, but I doubt I would like leathered bathroom countertops.

How many people will be using the bath? It seems to me that if you put in a sit down area for your daughter she will be spending more time in the bathroom than others and that might cause conflict. I think that storage space that everyone can use might work better and you can put a pretty vanity in her bedroom.

Bathroom will be used by only child, teen-aged daughter. When we have guests we always make her go last since she tends to use up all the hot water. It is new construction, no windows and the door is centered on the short side. I'm thinking about doing an 18 inch linen cabinet with drawers under it, then 24 inch knee space, then 24 inch sink cabinet, followed by 30 inches for the toilet. Will that work?
