To Buy Extended Warranty Or Not To Buy
Comments (5)Hmmm, I always do. That said, MAN aren't the prices for them getting crazy now? For computers, I try to figure what all I could buy for the warranty cost and use that to decide. I stumbled upon 'Square Trade' warranties for e-bay sellers. I buy a lot of computer parts on e-bay, new, through Square Trade sellers now. It's certainly a reasonable cost and contracted to cover a lot. 'Course I haven't had to use it yet... I only hope there isn't bizzarre small type that sticks it to the buyer. That's the other big problem with warranties, IMHO....See MoreWhen should you extend a warranty on computer?
Comments (14)The point I was trying to make was not that my own personal computers have all needed a lot of repairs. Although this last laptop certainly has, but that in general, a computer compared to a microwave oven let's say, is more likely to need service over five years of it's lifetime than the microwave. In other words, an extended warranty on a computer may be more useful than on other appliances. Tech support can be a very individual thing. Some people are very computer savvy, or they have a friend or family member who is. I have never had any close friends to help me work out an issue. When I first started on computers, I was having to call all the time to ask questions about how to do everything. Now they no longer cover you for software issues anyway. But you can't always rely on people in forums to help you work out a problem that is over your head, so for me, at least, tech support gives me peace of mind that I am not going to get stuck. As for breakage, yes, I did think of the fact that I use my computer at home most of the time, but it really isn't that much more to add that to the coverage. I don't use it at a desk though and am always carrying it and picking it up and putting it down, and really, you never if over the life of a machine your needs will change and you will want to be taking it out a lot. No, I don't abuse my computer, if anything I am too vigilant about being careful with it. Have never spilled anything even once on the keyboard in thirteen years. Or dropped a computer, etc. What has had to be replaced on my laptop were unprovoked hardware issues. adam...See MoreShould I get extended warranty for Subzero 685?
Comments (9)I have just finished with an extended warranty service on a DCS stove. The igniter went out and GE couldn't find anyone in my area (CHICAGO!) to service the stove. I had to go back and forth with GE and they finally agreed after about ten phone calls to let me find my own repair person. There is only one repair company in all of Chicago and one in Wisconsin. They have very strick boundaries for where they go to repair. Then to add to the trauma, GE Warranty Service told me they had a limit to the repair costs. Well the repairs came to $100 more than their limit. Again a series of calls and they GE have agreed to reimbuse me. I am glad I had the warranty, but you need to make sure what it will and won't repair! Also if you have service people in your area. Will SZ like DCS restrict who they send parts to so that every repair person in town can't get the parts? My repair guy told me of a case where someone bought a cheaper $300 dishwasher and also bought the warranty. The warranty had a limit of $20 a year in repairs and was totally worthless. Because SZ is pricier, make sure that you won't have a limit because the repairs costs too much! Remeber service people charge you travel time if you're not located near one. I bought my stove thru EXPO and was going to make them be responsible had GE Warranty Service not taken care of everything. Please investigate the extended warranty fully before handing over your money. Especially since a lot of call centers are no longer in the USA and you may be dealing with foreigners which adds to the frustration. I was able to survive without a broiler ignitor for weeks. Can you survive without a compressor for weeks? Good Luck....See MoreExtended Warranty at Appliances Connection-- should I?
Comments (5)Momma, I wouldn't consider spending money on an extended warranty. Most extended warranties have all kinds of disclaimers and it makes it difficult to actually get the repairs made. I am an authorized service center for a major manufacturer who is truly outstanding. They offer a full year warranty (not appliances) and will always allow me to err in the favor of the consumer, including many times to repair when the product is actually out of the warranty period. OTOH, I am also a service center for an extended warranty center. I have had to go to bat for the consumer many times as the warranty center was more interested in a quick fix rather than a long lasting correction. I always refuse to do a half baked job and I have to be adamant in making the repair correctly even though it costs the warranty center more. My point with this is, not all authorized service centers will go the extra mile for the customer. The end user is truly at the mercy of the repair people to go to bat for them and many just will not spend the extra time to do this. I would squirrel away the amount that an extended warranty would cost and use this towards any repair if needed. A good local repair shop is usually more accommodating and know their business inside and out! HTH. Holly...See Morefairegold
