I saw this done on a great show on HGTV My Big Amazing Renovation. The couple did a his and her huge walk in shower and they were amazing, no pun intended. The Gents shower was done in a red/green Onyx. They put in cubbies and the lighting was done with fiber optics. I loved the idea and did a search but it was pretty involved and I didn't get that deep into my investigating. I then forgot about it and would love to know if you find something out about it. If I remember the pricing was all over the map and I had to digg deeper to figure it all out.

Look into fiber optics. There's an electrician in town that I've talked to regarding the possibility of doing this, and because all electricity is remote with fiiber optics, it's definitely possible.

We will be using a mixture of stair and down lights from the company below. They're so small and cute! I was assured that the light output is really a warm white and not the usual bluish tint and that they were indeed 100% waterproof and completely safe to use in a shower.

We might put one in a shower niche to illuminate down through the glass shelves. I'm concerned that it would literally spotlight any soap rings or other gunk... although the lights will have their own switch and won't be used daily.

Thanks for that link, Julie. I was looking for a more elegant stair safety lighting system than the local light store could come up with, and those look fantastic.

Just make sure that the lights are approved for a wet area and are GFCI protected and you should meet code. Also, if this bathroom ceiling has insulation above it, make sure that the lights are approved for contact with insulation or just meet mfg. required clearances to insulation.

That's the beauty of fiber optics-- Electricity doesn't come near the shower. The fibers don't heat up, either, so there's no worry about contact with other materials, either.
