Stainless Steel Cleaner suggestions?

Just got a brand-new stainless steel range and hood, looking for ideas on what to use to keep it clean.

So far I heard positive things about WD-40 and Weiman. Did some Googling, came up with a lot of info, but too much to sort though - would love to hear personal recommendations.

What do you use to clean your stainless steel appliances?

Oh, forgot to mention... smell is important. If you could tell me what your cleaner smells like, that would be great.

White bottle with silver lettering? - sounds like it could have been a Restoration Hardware product, perhaps? I don't think they have any more of their cleaning products, however. I've had something called "Shiela Shine" for nearly 2.5 years - comes in a tin can that I was unable to open for nearly those 2+ years so I had never used it. Well, I did finally knock it open last weekend to use, and this stuff is unbelievable. Got my SS spotlessly spotlessly clean, cleaned away all vestiges of water spots and amorphous spots that simply wiping down with a MC would not. In the 4 intervening days since I worked on my DW and oven (dont' think I did anything else as I did this at 2:00am coz I couldn't sleep) I have not gotten any marks on either. I don't know how well it will keep marks at bay but I am really quite happy with this stuff. Both our appliances look spotlessly clean and absolutely brand new. We got this from our appliance shop - they gave or sold it to my DH when he ordered the appliances (stainless steel all). They had remarked that we'd need it with the order we'd just placed and that they recommend it highly. Well, consider me converted after not even bothering to open the tin for 2+ years.

In what way would that harm stainless steel? Read the label. The manufacturer went to a lot of trouble to stick it on there and all of it's information. And, what does the appliance mfg. recommend? I've heard olive oil makes a great protective coating after it's clean.

It is ridiculous, agreed. But it's a function of being caught in this massive change over of technologies and manufacturing of home products and pretty much everything I suppose. Take oven cleaner. My first stoves didn't have self-cleaning ovens. Then those came along and oven cleaner wasn't really necessary. Now we have self-clean ovens that sometimes don't work well, or fry the electronics, or cause the enamel oven interiors to crack off -- even in the highest end brands. So don't use oven cleaner and don't use self-clean either! I know you've read those Wolf oven threads. They are doing reupholstery when they should be rebuilding and rethinking. And a majority of the engineers who are designing this stuff are mostly men while the majority of users are women. Due to media, we see high end looks a lot but need them at a better price. SZ, or Miele & Gaggenau are using sheet stainless but more affordable brands can't use it and to hold a price point. The coating technology is extremely good now (at least the faucet folk claim that) so they are coating and selling it as stainless and marketing it with cutsey names that sound to the average person like stainless with some type of specialized treatment. Yes, we are getting specialized treatment. Re the paper towel thing. I cannot imagine why a manufacturer would say no paper towels for the inside of a fridge. Curious which brand it is. And has the person who was told this asked for an explanation about why not? I know that from my interaction with various manufacturers I hear some pretty dumb things from them and some things that just aren't true. Again, microfiber towels work better than anything else I've tried, including paper towels, for cleaning in general. I use yellow and blue for regular cleaning and reserve the green ones for kitchen use only -- no cross use. I wash them in hot (140F) water or on sanitize (165F) if heavily used. Ain't no germs livin in those towels after that. And if it's not a washer where the hot water temperatures are precise, just saturate with alcohol before washing.

Ordinary "rubbing alcohol" is 30% water which can remain as droplets after cleaning if not caught up by the cloth. The "no fault alcohol" cleaner widely used in technical applications is isopropanol 99% also called isopropyl 99% usually also found in large drug stores in 500 ml bottles. It can be light misted with a small spray bottle and cleaned after a few seconds pause with a microfiber cloth. One thing it won't shift for some reason is dried grapefruit juice splatter. Cleaning stainless steel often calls for more than two different types of cleaner and several attempts at using them in different order to discover what works. Good cleaners in one situation that fail in another usually indicate an additional contaminant problem is present that must be dealt with first. A good example are the smudges sometimes left behind after trying to strip off protective plastic sheeting which decides to rip instead of lifting in one piece.

1/4 ammonia and 3/4 water, in a spray bottle. Smells like ammonia; cleans with no streaks.

Pledge in the yellow and brown can. Avoid greasy film forming "cleaners" like WD40 and others. They just attract and hold dirt. Classic Pledge just smells like lemon.

I also used Pledge when I had stainless appliances - it worked great, I just got tired of cleaning stainless appliances, so I paneled the fridge and dishwasher this time around.

I use Weiman's. The smell is mild and not unpleasant imo. I have both the spray and the wipes and both work well for me.

Mix rubbing alcohol-water-essential lavender oil (or tea tree oil or...) in a spray bottle (30-50% alcohol, the rest, water, oil--enough to scent the mixture to desired amount). Spray it on SS, granite, etc., and wipe with a microfiber cloth (or paper towel). If you avoid using oil based cleaners/polishes on SS, you can usually achieve nice results with the alcohol-water spray, and can spot clean as well (which is usually tough with oily products).

Macherie75 and Tibbrix - WD-40 is flammable. OMG, do not use it on a stovetop or on a hood. And it's poisonous and should not be used around food. Check out WD-40's label below.

When I see people recommending WD-40 to clean stainless steel in the kitchen, I can't believe it. What in the heck is wrong with people? There are so many SS cleaners on the market, not to mention non-specialty cleaners that work just as well, but let's spray WD-40 instead? To anyone reading this thread, give a pass on the flammable, poisonous WD-40 in the kitchen, and try any of these: Stainless Steel Magic, Twinkle, Sheila Shine, Howard's Stainless Steel Cleaner, Wow EzFinish, and my favorite, a little dishwashing liquid on a microfiber cloth.

Microfiber cloth and some water. Add a little dish soap if the surface is really dirty. Cheap, easy, no build up, environmentally sound, and works great for my busy kitchen (two kids and a dog).

WD 40 smells horrendous! UGH! I agree with crl, just water and a microfiber cloth is all you need and if it's bad add a bit of dish liquid. Microfiber and water is the best window cleaner too, just go back over it with a dry microfiber cloth before it dries to shine it up.

I use Stainless steel magic, twinkle, and also just use a little drop of dawn on damp microfiber cloth. All easy, smells fine and no streaks.

Water and baking soda. Use a soft cloth to rub with the grain until you can no longer see the streaks and . Dampen another soft cloth to remove the residue. Use a third, dry, soft cloth to dry it. Always rub with the grain.
