Towel bar placement suggestions?

I just recently found GW while searching for kitchen appliance reviews. What an absolutely awesome forum! This is my first post, so please bear with me.

We just recently completed the majority of a bathroom remodel project. It is now down to those little details. My SO and I just can't agree on some of the finishing touches.

I purchased American Standard Williamsburg accessories in chrome and porcelain to coordinate with the bathtub fixtures. The combination has since been discontinued in the chrome/porcelain combo so additional matching pieces are no longer available. We have the 24" towel bar, towel ring, and robe hook.

There is little to no space between the shower curtain and wall at the head of the tub. I will be either purchasing or making a fabric curtain to cover the plastic liner since I am not a fan of vinyl. This will further reduce any space. The bracket for the shower enclosure is centered on the wall at 20". Therefore I don't think the 24"towel bar would look good there either. Unless one of my kids moves back into the house, the tub will not be used on a regular basis. I was thinking the robe hook, placed on the beadboard trim at the wall corner, would suffice in holding any towel that would be required for either the tub or shower.

The wall to the left of the vanity is the best location for any towels that would be required for drying hands after using the sink. This is where I thought the towel bar might look best. I love the towel ring but I think the space needs something more substantial. In addition, both the towel ring and the robe hook are similar in size. I just think the scale would be off with them so close to each other.

My SO would like to place the towel bar on the wall opposite the toilet. I was considering placing a large picture and cabinet piece on this wall to offset the weight and color of the vanity.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, your granite is beautiful! I really like your vanity, too.

Your ideas sound good. The only other thing I could think would be to put the bar on the wall, just above the beadboard and below where the shower attaches to the wall. But it might be a pain to access there.

I think I'd rather have the bar close at hand to the shower/bath than have to cross the room to get it.

Your color combinations are great. I'm always trying to find the perfect tan/neutral paint color and this looks really fabulous. For whatever reason, when I look at paint chips, I can't seem to actually identify this shade. What is the name and brand of this color? Thanks!

I realize this is an old post, but from personal experience (and I am not speaking necessarily about children) hooks are very plausible as a) they prevent over stacking b) gives the towels a chance to dry c) actually can look tidier as there is no need to fold/drape d) also purposeful for hanging a bathrobe or your clothes while bathing or even a small bathmat if floor space is tight. That said; for easy hanging of large bath sheets due to their length; I have sewn on a colour co-ordinated loop (double fold cotton bias tape found in the sewing notions) about mid way down on one side. Re style; just ensure you choose a hook that has a reasonable projection and has some sort of a stopper at its end and experiment with its spacing if using more than one. Oh, should add for those with the same question and have limited space for mounting; you might wish to look at a swivel type of hook as well that have more than one arm/hook.

Tile border / towel bar placement

If your towel ring/bar is above your accent tile, then your towel will hang down and cover your tile. (Ask me how I know this.) You'd actually see more accent tile if you mount your towel bar/ring on the accent stripe. Plus, if you crack a tile, it's a 1x1, so easy to replace. I'd decide on a best place for the accent tile, so it won't be obstructed by countertop clutter or cut in half by a window. Then decide on the best place for a towel bar. Then adjust each a few inches if needed. But no, there's no rule.

Could you use a train rack? There are a variety of configurations, and some have a few bars or hooks, and then there is the flat space on top. Restoration Hardware has several.

I would not have the towel over the toilet. The towel will be IN the toilet :) If you cut down the bar as Madtown suggest, look at Baldwin brand as the bar comes out from the post and can be cut to the length you want. Others can do this too. These post on the Baldwin I bought are fairly long, so easy to get a towel draped. I cut mine down to a 14" bar. None of the 12 to 14" bars that I saw fit my needs. I spent $18 for the Baldwin brand bar off Ebay, and it is chromed and solid brass. Brass is easy to hack saw through. Here is a picture of my shortened bar. Thats a 14" center to center bar. See how the post bring the bar out nicely from the vanity. That is the easiest bar to put a towel into. I change the hand towel out daily and can practically toss it into place. I don't know if this example is your style or not but your drawing is rather traditional looking, so I thought my picture might help. To be honest once the bar was up I am never inclined to look at the style details. This last picture you posted looks just like it is painted the color I used :) Benjamin Moore "Bunny Gray". It looks like a light blue but is considered a gray. Who knew I would love it! But it was the perfect color with my marble listello. As far as towel rings go. I have never had one. They are just fussy looking to me though. I see them as too unstable, with just one connection. One has to lift the ring, then insert the towel. For kids I think a bar would work better. I could see even me twisting a towel ring off the wall :0
