Our tile guy used some kind of Lacrete epoxy grout that is supposed to resist mold and mildew. We have not moved in yet so I'm not sure how true it is.

My tile guy used epoxy grout and it is (2-3 years in) bulletproof. I have well water that grows mold (that pink slimy kind) so easily and I have to clean with bleach to keep it under control, so I wanted something that bleach wouldn't affect. I really, really love it!

Adding acrylic to the unsanded grout will make it very non-porous.

We used Tek commercial grade non-staining grout in our shower area. l will say that I started seeing the light pink mold start to grow on it about 3 months into using the shower. I ended up filling a spray bottle with 1/3 bleach to 2/3rds water. Now, at the end of my shower (after I squeegee the glass), I spray the bleach-water mixture on the walls and floor. Takes about 30 seconds and no more mold.

Jewel, what kind of ventilation do you have in your bathroom? What's your climate like? With both my old tile and my new (4 months), I've never had mold on the grout. I don't have an extraction fan but I do have a window above my tub/shower surround and it's open year-round, lots in the summer and a couple of inches in the winter. Bay Area climate and relatively low humidity.

Our ventilation was poor, but we opened up a two room setup (vanities separate from tub/toilet), and are adding a ceiling fan. I hope it will solve the humidity problem.

I was hoping to avoid the squeegee, I see there is no escape, tho. :)

We are also getting an epoxy grout. Olychick, do you remember which brand was used in your bath?

Jewel, I just looked through Tek's website, and the suggest the acrylic additive for their cement based grout. Was yours cement based or epoxy?

Linelle -- We live in the southeast and have a brand new exhaust fan directly above the shower. Before we moved here, we never had a problem with mold in our shower.

Marty180 -- The unsanded grout used on our bathroom floor is by PolyBlend (Home Depot). We had some cracking that happened, so the contractor dug it out, remixed the grout with acrylic, and re-grouted. When I asked about sealing it, they said the acrylic makes the grout non-porous so there was no need.

The Tek commercial grade non-staining grout (#575) was used for the shower floor and walls. I don't think it's an epoxy.

About the squeegee, do yourself a favor and have your shower glass treated with Showerguard (by Cardinal). It's a baked on protective treatment that will help make your glass easier to maintain and clean.

Ooh, yes, we had the showerguard. It wore off, but it was really awesome for the first couple of years!

Appreciate the advice on add-ins, I will look them over too. I don't want my current reno grout getting yucky, even though we have ventillation and I am promising to use the squeegee

Showerguard provides a permanent protection with a lifetime guarantee. If it wore off, it sounds like it was a different product. There are some that are "after market" that don't last very long.

Jewel is 100% correct. Showerguard is included in the glass making process and cannot wear off.

Just use the Fusion Pro. No problems there....

Are you thinking of Hydroshield? That's what my DH has on his shower door. It really seems to work with a quick squeegee and stays nice and clear. However, if for some reason you have to clean the shower door, you have to use denatured alcohol, which is a minor pain. .

With ShowerGuard, you can still use most of your usual bathroom cleaners like Scrubbing Bubbles. Every 10th shower or so, I run a Magic Eraser over it (don't know why -- it's not really needed) and spray a vinegar/water mixture on it before doing the squeegee.

My contractor used fusion grout, I have not had any issues with mold or discoloration.

I'm sorry, I don't know the brand of grout used. Some tile setters apparently don't like using epoxy because it is more difficult in some way (not sure how) - but my tile guy really loves it.

We live in the steamy SC Lowcountry and mold is rampant. We use Bostic Tru Color urethane grout and never have any mold or staining at all. It performed so well the first time we used it we actually had old grout removed from other bathrooms so we could replace it with the Bostic. It never, ever has to be sealed, I even have it in white on the kitchen backsplash and grease and/or tomato sauce spots wipe right off. It is pricey but worth every penny to me. My tile installer balked at first, it is a bit more difficult to use, but now he tells me he won't use anything else in kitchens and baths.

I'd also recommend Fusion Pro. No muss, no fuss, no color worries, no sealer, no slimy growing stuff.

Check with the tile experts to be sure, but I believe that I have read that you do not want to be the first customer that your tiler has ever used epoxy grout with. Let him experiment elsewhere and know what he is doing before doing yours.

That said, Marty 180, everything I have read in my research on redoing my bathroom leads me to believe that if you are going to have tile in a shower, epoxy grout is the only way to go!

Personally, I am not going to have tile. I am not a good enough cleaner to deal with it. My lungs can't use most cleansers and my hands and wrists can't scrub. I give in. Solid surface, here I come!
