Long Term Reliability of MW/Convection ovens

Looking at MW / Convection ovens -- everything from Panasonic at about $500 to Miele at about $2800 for the Speed Oven. Advantium is another that combines MW and halogen for about $1700.

Was wondering if one can expect a long life as there are so many reports about the relatively short life of the magnetron in a conventional MW.

Is it wise to spend a lot on a MW - convection combo? Is the MW component on these better/different from the $79 Sharp?

My Sharpe is about 6 yrs and no problems.

I am trying to decide if I should get a MW/Convection or just a MW for above the range (both with an exhaust fan). I'm just not sure what I am going to use the Convection feature for.

Any input would be appreciated.

I think the only correlation between the purchase price of an appliance and reliability is the cost of repairs. I've spent a little time on appliance repair forums, which are frequented by appliance repair techs, to see what they have to say about certain brands. My favorite is the Appliance Guru. One thing I noticed on that forum in the refrigeration section is how many posts there are about sub-zero. Now that is not a very common fridge in most homes but it is mentioned more often than I would have thought on the repair forums. Also you can learn which brands make their repair data readily available and where to buy parts. If your brand makes data hard to get (like appearently Samsung for example) repairmen will have a harder time fixing your appliance. Here is a link that might be useful: Appliance Guru

I did that exactly, ellessebee. I have the 240V OTR Advantium mounted above the counter. I also have 15" wall cabinets so it fits and works like a charm. I don't think there are any differences in the cooking features between the wall oven and OTR models. The oven cavity is pretty big, because I can fit a half sheet. There are two considerations you need to keep in mind. 1. The OTR does need to vent, because it performs a cooling function after using the non-MW functions. I have mine blow out the front, above the door. In hindsight, I would have run some duct up and over to the adjacent rangehood. 2. The door needs and extra inch of clearance on the hinge side (left) to open. When the contractor first installed it, the whole unit was flush with the cabinet and looked awesome. He was so proud of himself, as was I. I went to use it later and couldn't open the door. It also blocked the exhaust in the front. He had to come back and reinstall it by tacking 2x4s (actually measured 1.5x3.5) to the back wall and then installing it. Now it all works beautifully, while taking a slight hit in the aesthetics. Another benefit to mounting the OTR model OTC is that the underside is heat and moisture resistant. So my coffee maker has a permanent home under there where I don't have to worry about the steam damaging the undersides of the cabinet. Oh, and the built in light of the OTR serves as task lighting for the area underneath. So I also saved money on lighting there. This post was edited by jscout on Mon, Jan 28, 13 at 13:26

Thanks, pillog. The dimensions and storage suggestions are extremely helpful. As for the 27" vs. 30", I'd love to have a 30" but the problem is how to fit one in. I'm working around various obstacles (e.g., a chimney) and fixed features (e.g., unmovable doors and some unmovable walls) that limit what we can do with the space. On the other hand, I hadn't thought about what would happen if the 27" ovens die and replacements can't be found. The current ovens are decades old and still work fine, but I guess that's not likely to repeat itself, given the life expectancy of current appliances. It may be time to look at those plans again and see if there's a way to steal 3 inches...

Just remember that the convection element takes up a lot of room inside the MW. Jwfitz, have you seen them in the store? If not, you should, and then decide whether you want to cut into the MW's interior capacity so much with that convection element. Some people love their MW's convection feature, and others say it's not worth it, especially given the upcharge for the convection. So it might depend upon your personal usage and cooking style.

I've been trying to think about my cooking style and the new appliances. I have seen the MWs in the store and didn't think they were that small but I am currently using a counter top unit that is pretty small.

My current situation is that I have a double oven range (above and below the cooking surface) - think obsolete from the 70's - and a stand alone MW. I use both conventional ovens but almost never at the same time. I use the microwave for steaming veggies and heating up leftovers. I will be getting a new range with a convection oven. I'm now trying to decided if I should get a MW or WM/convection above the range. I've looked at the GE Profile (JVM1790BKBB) and thought the controls were akward and didn't make sense and liked the Kitchenaid (KHMS2050SSS).

I'm also trying to decide between the Kitchenaid (KER5807BL) and GE Profile (JB910)ranges.
