going from electric to battery in a laptop???

Is it a good idea to turn off a laptop when I switch from battery to electricity and visa versa?

I know that's a really basic question, but I never used the battery in my old one, so the question never came up.

I never worry about that,, its like a battery back up UPS unit.. instantly switches over.

One nice thing about Vista is the sleep works so well that putting it into sleep mode saves your places and is going to stop the hard drive spinning when moving around .. thats the thing I worry about most when bumping the laptop around. I dont want bumps while its writing to disk. But I have to admit i do unplug/replug and carry it around video streaming and hard drive working. But I shouldnt.

That is actually a really good question that needs to be addressed. Many people think of it. But, never do they think to ask! Powering your computer is this first step to prolonging it's life!
If possible, remove the battery and use the AC adapter for powering the laptop when the computer is used on a desktop. A properly cared for laptop battery can have a service life of two to four years, or more. If properly cared for. And as a reminder, the battery is being charged continually while laptop is plugged in. Which can cause overheating.

Amazon ran out of the bulb I recommended above!!!!!. I have a couple others I've tried now which I like a lot. These are NOT battery operated, if that helps... I use plug in ones because they're bright, I don't like messing with batteries, and I put them on a timer for the 6 months between autumn and spring, lol. Seriously though, it makes these dark days brighter! These are really nice and not as bright as the super bright golden light ones I recommended. If you do NOT want super bright LEDs, in my super geeky opionion.. try these ones: http://amzn.to/1XE2bJX (Satco is always quality) ... If you do want them a bit bright and in a range of colors (gold tint, clear etc etc) get the 2 watt ones of these..., there is an entire product line of "filament" bulbs that look very classical! The 2200K or any "K" number lower than 2700 will have a warm glow, 2700K will look like normal bulbs. http://amzn.to/1TDbBj1 Personally I'm a little annoyed cause they don't look exactly like my bright ones and I like to have them all standardized, but what are you gonna do, they are inventing more and more LED bulbs every year, including festive ones :p

In numerous cases, Dell in particular, if you flip over the laptop there is a pushbutton on the battery and a series of LEDs that light up to indicate the level of charge when you push the button (assumes the charge circuit is operational and that the battery can hold a charge). I would start by checking Dell's website to see if the battery is part of any recall, many were. If you rarely use it on battery I wouldn't spend any extra on a larger capacity one. Third party ones should be used with caution, quality is often lacking. Personally I have used Lenmar replacements, for laptops and camcorders, when competitively priced. So far I have been lucky, some reviewers seem to diss them. I would definitely factor in the cost of a new battery vs purchase of a new warrantied unit also.

Long life with a battery is using the laptop and using basic applications. The more intensive the program, the less actual battery time. You can also go into your Toshiba Power options (Control Panel) and adjust the battery settings to optimal (may help). Anything more than a year (warranty) is gravy. Having said that, some will fail sooner than others. I have had batteries last several years and some go after a little over a year. Personally, my battery is never removed from either computer other than when adding memory or something like that. Of course, I dont travel either now so battery life is not a big deal with me now

I just bought a Toshiba L45 bottom line laptop for $450 after $150 rebate. Luckily it has a Pentium Mobile Dual Core processor, dual layer dvd burner, wifi, 5400rpm hard drive, 1Gb memory, graphic card with 128 mem and can use system ram too, 15.4 inch true-bright display. Sent 90 bucks to an etailer for 2gb of Kingston memory and a 4gb sandisk usb drive for Vista's readyBoost feature. Works nifty actually on 1GB, a 1gb flash drive does give it some added snappyness. I have a wifi enaabled modem from my isp, which was free. And a second wifi access point out back because there's a dead spot where I sit out there. Not much to it really. You dont need to send much if you watch for the sales... I prefer to stay away from the celery type mobile processor because they can get more hotter on your lap than most and dont think they have the power savings flexabilities. I'm replacing a 4 plus yr old toshiba that I broke and will mickey mouse it back together one way or another and probably make it a part time server and back up computer so I can make my old desktop into something with a coolness old factor. It uses too much electricity so I cant run it full time. I'm rambling... its way to cold and windy out there, 45Â°/8:30am .... which is like ..freezing to me.

Hi, thanks for the input. Mikie, one of my library patron was using a laptop and apparently just disconnected from the electric power. He got a "nag note" from his laptop telling him not to do that. I don't know how old or what OS he's using. I guess I could do it once to see what happens, but I'd rather not...

Read your manual. It probably has the guidelines best suited for 'your laptops design and its circuitry .

Toshiba here was first time ever taken out of the factory box about mid December 2007, so its 1.5 yrs old, I don't know how long it sat on shelf - its battery right now shows a 6% wear level, 44000 mWh design capacity new / currently 41151 mWh at 100% of charge.

Probably more than 99 percent of the time its on the AC adapter and runs 24/7. Sleeps after 100 minutes of non use which really doesn't happen every day like I should. I should force sleep for it & then maybe I'd force more normal sleep on me too ;)
Battery is under the left palm rest where I feel no heat. It would be rare for me in the things I do to shut down windows before moving the laptop while the on battery.

Only have the one ac adapter, meant to buy another for a second location but price always makes me dizzy.
