going from electric to battery in a laptop???

Is it a good idea to turn off a laptop when I switch from battery to electricity and visa versa?

I know that's a really basic question, but I never used the battery in my old one, so the question never came up.

I never worry about that,, its like a battery back up UPS unit.. instantly switches over.

One nice thing about Vista is the sleep works so well that putting it into sleep mode saves your places and is going to stop the hard drive spinning when moving around .. thats the thing I worry about most when bumping the laptop around. I dont want bumps while its writing to disk. But I have to admit i do unplug/replug and carry it around video streaming and hard drive working. But I shouldnt.

That is actually a really good question that needs to be addressed. Many people think of it. But, never do they think to ask! Powering your computer is this first step to prolonging it's life!
If possible, remove the battery and use the AC adapter for powering the laptop when the computer is used on a desktop. A properly cared for laptop battery can have a service life of two to four years, or more. If properly cared for. And as a reminder, the battery is being charged continually while laptop is plugged in. Which can cause overheating.

Genes - I did try your suggestions - and the Dell won't power up. Wiggling the adapter didn't make a difference. Kay - I'm curious why Dell thought it might be a battery? And I don't have any steps I can walk you through beyond what Genes outlined. Unfortunately, my Dell won't power up. There are replacement batteries on Amazon for just over $20 - so maybe it's worth trying that in case a Dell just won't power up if the batter is bad - whether it's plugged in or not. --------------------- On a separate note, I did get the battery replacement for my lenovo - and it works. Now I can unplug my laptop and get about 3-4 hours (which isn't great - but running on battery is not what I usually need). I did calibrate it once. Charge it fully - let it discharge fully until it shut off. Then recharged it fully. The battery came with instructions to do that once. I am confused, however, as I thought Li-ion batteries didn't need that at all - and that batteries that do need that need a few cycles of it. So I'm wondering if I should go through a couple of more charge and discharge cycles. Thank you. Lynn.

You should never have to remove and replace a battery to get it to charge and when fully charged, I would expect the light to remain a solid green not a flashing amber..are the specs of the replacement battery the same as the original..Seen all kinds of strange things happen with non-OEM replacement batteries

yes there will be a difference for sure between a 6 cell and a 12 cell it may protrude more also depending on the laptop. If you only want it for travel then I would go with a netbook. I have an Acer Aspire netbook which came with the smaller 3-cell and I purchased a 9cell to give me more time, it is quite a bit bigger and protrudes downward which is not all bad because it gives the netbook a lift in the back and it is actually easier to type on. The netbooks are more limited in performance and power of course but I have been happy with it and it is very easy to travel with. I also have the Pandigital Novel tablet which is sold as an ereader but you can go online with it and do pretty much what you can do on a laptop, it has a virtual keyboard that pops up onscreen when you need one, it plays music, videos, stores photos, ebooks, has wifi. You might want to check out the 2 threads here about it, the price is excellent. Definitely would not use it as my only pc.

I purchased a new laptop battery through Amazon about two years ago. At the time I had a flight planned and the TSA (?) said to make sure your battery was charged so they could have you turn on the laptop to make certain it wasn't a bomb. I thought to myself, "Don't suicide bombers blow themselves up? They wouldn't care if the battery was charged.". Wouldn't you know, they never even asked for me to turn it on. Humph. My laptop is always plugged in too. Waste of money? It still is nice to know the battery is new in case my mom has another emergency and I have to fly out to be by her side.

Hi, thanks for the input. Mikie, one of my library patron was using a laptop and apparently just disconnected from the electric power. He got a "nag note" from his laptop telling him not to do that. I don't know how old or what OS he's using. I guess I could do it once to see what happens, but I'd rather not...

Read your manual. It probably has the guidelines best suited for 'your laptops design and its circuitry .

Toshiba here was first time ever taken out of the factory box about mid December 2007, so its 1.5 yrs old, I don't know how long it sat on shelf - its battery right now shows a 6% wear level, 44000 mWh design capacity new / currently 41151 mWh at 100% of charge.

Probably more than 99 percent of the time its on the AC adapter and runs 24/7. Sleeps after 100 minutes of non use which really doesn't happen every day like I should. I should force sleep for it & then maybe I'd force more normal sleep on me too ;)
Battery is under the left palm rest where I feel no heat. It would be rare for me in the things I do to shut down windows before moving the laptop while the on battery.

Only have the one ac adapter, meant to buy another for a second location but price always makes me dizzy.
