What is your style? Those vanity doors are pretty contemporary, so might be hard to go traditional.... Thoughts: 1) If you like the vanity cabinet just fine, or just want to maybe paint it and add a top, you might hunt around for a stone remnant for the top. I was quoted about $300 to cut and finish a soapstone slab with cutout for one undermount sink. It would probably be about $400 for two sinks. Low-end granite from a remnant selection was around the same cost. But I wouldn't spend that kind of money if you don't love the vanity itself. 2) If you want to buy something pre-made that doesn't have that triangle at the end, why not just build the triangle section out of something else. For instance, it could be like a wood shelving unit that fits in there (maybe floating so you could still fit the trash can!) with it's top somewhat higher than whatever prefab vanity top you get, so that there isn't a funny transition of materials... so it looks more intentional. it could even be a little piece of some fabulous stone like marble or whatever, because it won't cost very much for such a little piece with only edge finish and no cutouts.... 3) How handy are you? You could build a simple open shelving vanity (many pics on line of these now) with baskets, and splurge on a gorgeous stone top from a remnant yard. Or not eve, one of the pics below has a wood top, you could use semi-recessed sinks or vessels if you like those. Even cheaper :) Something like these: 4) Personally, I'd probably take the whole thing out and replace with an inexpensive vanity like Ikea's Godmoron units, either with their vanity top with a filler piece as I just described, or with a custom-made slab top. But that's probably going to run $500-$900 all told to do that. What's your budget?

Ok, then! I won't remove the framing when I get in to it. I have not the faintest idea if they installed a vapor barrier when they originally installed all this stuff - but, since the mold/mildew I saw was in a fairly small area, I think they may have, and whatever moisture problem I had in that area is from a different cause. I found an excellent article about mold and mildew problems, but I neglected to save the link. It taught me a lot tho. I am aware that whatever it was will never truly go away, but I don't think it is currently active. I also don't think it was from the bathroom moisture, because it is about 6-10 feet farther down the wall, in the "cellar" section - separated by a stud wall and all that distance. Of course, it COULD be, no doubt, but I also believe in KISS, and that would tell me that a different problem was the cause - like perhaps the washer exhaust repeatedly backing up into the cellar area. We have an existing exhaust fan - but I've realized, reading here, that we should be more rigorous about using it. So I'm back to the original concept - 1/2" concrete board for the wall tiling! I will guess the current insulation behind whatever is there now is fiberglass - most of the house insulation is, and I know other areas of the wall inside the foundation are fiberglass. Foam could be arranged, I suppose. You are thinking of urethane foam? Thanks!

ahreno, you can free up a bit of space by either changing the door to an outward swing or to a pocket door. Unfortunately, the 2 drawings don't show up well on my monitor so I can't see the shaded blue area. I'd guess it shows as darker grey with a 92" ceiling. If so, by incorporating this closet into your bath, working from the alcove to the tub, you can easily place a toilet, pedestal sink or vanity and a frameless shower stall on the 107" wall perpendicular to your tub along the 84" wall. If you don't add the 92" H area, you'll need to incorporate the red area into the larger closet. You'll be left with a 68 X 84 room. Then you can place a sink where the door currently swings in and may want to place the toilet in front of the wall that the pocket door slides into. The tub still works on the 84" wall and a 36 x 28 tight shower will fit. Not ideal but it gives you the luxury of a fully glassed in single person shower, your large claw foot tub and the necessities. Obviously, you can have a much more spacious scenario by incorporating the closet area, but this gives you an option.

Hi all, Thanks for the replies! I went to order the darker hex and lo and behold it’s out of stock across the country till late February. Start date is January. So bummed! Ordered a sample of the lighter stuff but not feeling crazy about it. I had my heart set on hex, but should I just do a dark gray rectangle tile? As for the vanity, yes it is not my first choice. I have looked at everything out there including pedestals. I am picky! I was about to have one custom made, but thought this is a bathroom, how much do I want to spend on a room I spend the least amount of time in? So, now I’m just not sure.
