What speakers are best for laptop

I want to purchase external speakers for my laptop. I am a general music listener and do not need top of the line speakers and at the same time I would like something decent. Is it possible to plug the speakers into the computer for the power source similar to a mouse or will that reduce the volume level? (I have two external speakers now and I cannot adjust the volume. they sound very much like the volume from my laptop only coming from an external source..no use having them). If I have to use the electrical outlet I would want something with minimal wires. Any recommendations?

I have several sets of speakers, but I really like my GE ultrasonix pro 2.0 speakers, they really have great sound and I paid very little for them. They have an individual volume knob on one speaker plus on off control and other controls. They are a 3 tier speaker so contain a nice bass speaker which means I do not have to have a separate subwoofer taking up space. I have more expensive speakers including, polk audio and other name brands but I tend to use those GE speakers most.
They do have a plug(transformer) to plug into electric socket so they are self powered which is really best, then there is a cable that goes to the pc to connect them.
This is them they are about 11" tall x 5" wide.

Any speaker with 3 tiers should be good that way you will get good highs and mids and lows, but make sure it is not super light weight, a good speaker should have some weight to it, and they should have power on off plus a volume control at the very least on the speaker. Mine happen to be 16 watts, I would not go any lower than that but you can definitely go higher.
I am assuming you are not wanting speakers to carry around with your laptop but to use on your desk?
If you want true laptop speakers that are just plug into the usb port and are portable you might want to look at these I have heard good things about them and as you can see they have good reviews, they are a big pricy.
Logitech V20 Notebook Speakers
This is another really good option but is not as portable but very nice for laptops, it also includes a built in usb hub and it does have the 3 tiers, and is usb powered.

I'm using a pair of Yamaha self powered speakers and these have been very good. These are powered from an AC wall outlet and use only the sound signal from the computer, thus they do not load down the computer. The right speaker contains the on-off switch, volume control, and tone adjust. An output jack on the back permits adding a bass (self poewered) speaker. For everyday purposes, the bass is not needed, but does enhance music listening.

As Marooma stated what you need to connect directly to your computer are computer speaker systems which have powered speakers, they come with a plug in that you have to plug into an electrical outlet to power them. Regular stereo speakers like the ones you show are for use in home stereo systems or home theater systems where the speakers plug into a receiver/amplifier which powers the speakers. To find speakers that work with your laptop or pc do searches for computer speakers, multimedia speakers, or powered speakers. This is an example of the type you would want, in the pictures note the electrical plug, most of these type also have an on off knob on one speaker and usually a volume knob also. Ms. Rose, do you have a Micro Center in your area? They have a web site but when you go into their stores, unlike a lot of the Best Buy folks, the people who work there are VERY educated in what they sell and the prices are great. My uses are very similar to yours. I've owned a lot of laptops and have paid a lot of money for extra's I never used. My favorite so far has been smaller sized, inexpensive HP's and Compaqs (400.00 or less) with a key pad on the board. They have all the features needed like micro card slots, usb ports, ample ram and hard drive space but are lighter and easier to move around with. After having an 18 inch mammoth HP and hating it, I'll never go larger than 15 inch again. It hasn't happened yet, but I am glad that if after a couple of years something does go wrong with the unit, it won't cost an arm and a leg to replace. Micro Center also has a great warranty program if that's something you are interested in. One thing that people don't usually think about but is really important is to know where the vent fans are for your system. HP used to build them on the bottom causing the units to get very hot. They've now redesigned them to vent on the side, but I'm not sure if all manufactures have done that yet. Also, I know a lot of people are happy with them, but my husband is an IT computer guy and a Dell employee; he's very familiar with their products and feels they are not what they used to be and are over priced for what you get. I have a Surface Pro3 at work. I use it pretty much as a laptop, not a tablet but at times it's nice to have the touch screen functionality. I think it would be better for personal use as it doesn't have a network jack, you have to have an accessory to plug it into a projector and it only has one USB port. It's also VERY Microsoft centric - for example you can't change your search engine default to Google. It's somewhat buggy even with Microsoft applications which you'd think would be the one thing they'd get right. I had to return my keyboard under warranty as one of the keys stopped working. I have considered buying one for personal use but more as a laptop not tablet though I'm not sure how well the keyboard would stay attached if not on a hard surface. I know another person whose Surface was slipping off his lap and he grabbed the keyboard which of course easily detached which resulted in a fatality for Surface. I might rather have a real laptop with a real keyboard. I use a Ipad mini for my tablet at home and I have a desktop computer for when I want a real keyboard. At some point I will want a laptop type device with a keyboard.

Thanks for response technospeak. At what wattage or level does is the line considered no longer low voltage? For example if I get a small 2 channel amp to run the speakers, it would be considered low voltage....but if its a hi current hi wattage amp....does it then change to a need for a necessary depth? or is high voltage reserved for other types of equipment for power like landscape lighting or something else? You definitely exceeded my intelligence when you wrote about the boxes and blank plates and gaskets. I will need to google what a setup as you mentioned looks like. I can visuallize pvc running under ground but I'm unsure what the other entry into ground, boxes, and plates you mention. I currently have rock speakers but I'm now contemplating speakers to be mounted on my back fence. I think I no longer want equipment on the ground taking up walking area or on grass. I was thinking of converting to landscaping and so the rock speakers seemed like a good choice, but between growth of plants or if I never plant anything, speakers off the ground might be a better option for versatility in future changes. Unless I plant a tree in front of them lol. I intend to start digging this upcoming week. I had some medical issues which has caused a postponement of some things. I have to make sure I don't accidently cut into spectrum wires or att wires while I'm digging the trench. Thanks again technospeak. If you have some customer images or example of a final product or even the install process showing the pieces you mention, the conduit, boxes, etc... that would be greatly appreciated. I'll be googling as best i can what you said before I buy some pvc or anything else.

I have Logisys SP6002CL 2.1 Clear Speaker System. I bought a set for my laptop, and a set for my father for his laptop. We are very pleased with them. Their appearance is unique, and the sound is terrific. We wanted a subwoofer because we use the laptop frequently for playing CDs--and hate the tinny sound.

Here's a link to a review of our set.
