Kerdi shower drain with ORB fixtures

Hmmmmmm, doesn't seem to be a Kerdi drain in an ORB finish? ALLLLLLL my fixtures in this bath are ORB. What to do, what to do? There is a brushed copper...would that be the best choice? I've never seen these drain finishes in person, and the two sites I've been on via the Internet do not have good photos.

I thought the same thing-- ORB should be closest to brushed copper. Yeah, and pearls are awfully close to diamonds...

Thier copper is very yellow and awfully bright, even if it is brushed.

I'd just stick to something neutral that would dissappear into the floor tile.

Odd to me that these guys don't offer a few more choices...

Drat, I just hate when this happens! I know this drain that matches nothing else will be all I see and concentrate on when I go in the bath...well, for awhile anyway. Makes me mad!

1) In a steam shower I want to do the best I can to prevent vapor from getting into the wall through the valve opening. While it depends on the valve, when Kerdi-ing I'll try to slice the Kerdi and adhere it to the valve body with Kerdi-Fix. Neatly as possible, without gunking up the valve or it's threadings, or adjustment screws, or... 2) Plaster Guard, it depends on the valve. Some valve bodies come with a plaster guard that is simply meant to protect the valve during installation. It gets removed during the finishing phase. Other valves have plaster guards that remain in place after the work is complete. Some are hybrid guards/mounting plates. If I can use the guard to my advantage, I keep it. If it's in the way, then out it goes. It all depends on the end goal, which for me in a steam shower is sealing the opening without compromising the valve. There's often not a "one size fits all" solution. Just detail things as you're able. 3) Unsealed escutcheon. I might not have been clear in my previous post, but I install the escutcheon just like the installation instructions say. In a regular shower the hole in the wall behind the escutcheon can remain open. In a steam shower I seal the opening behind the escutcheon. All the above is a "my way" type of thing. It's not the only way for sure.

Sadly, this is an excuse I don't "need" =) This bath was suppose to be at the bottom of my to-do list.....right after the refinishing the whole-house hardwood, new windows, farmhouse shed rebuild, etc etc etc. I'm concerned because the joist undernearth the bathroom is moist and I can see white residue/mold(?). I don't think it's a sudden thing. I suspect the plumbing heading the shower is leaking. There is no way to access it from the shower. The shower is an all tiled enclosure. I guess I could open up the back wall in the kitchen to get to it, but then what? The plumbing is galvanized. Fixtures solidly on there....couldn't even remove the showerhead. To add to that, it seems like the drain area is wet too. That's a big junk of the shower area right there. I was going to do everything except the shower area (wallpaper, old tile, etc) but now it looks like a complete gut job. I'm leaning with Option 4 too......as this would give me my tub in the house and fix the problem of how to route the new exhaust fan (theres none now). There is window in the pantry, so if I did it right, the tub would be right next to window. I have to watch the Money Pit again to motivate me =)

Masco is a huge, multi-national holding company. Just because they own Delta and Hansgrohe does not mean they are in any way the same company or producing similar products. Because Hansgrohe was acquired by a larger company like Masco also doesn't mean they just cut costs and now make a cheap, commodity product. You didn't exactly say that, but it seemed to be implied. So here's some of my research... ;) Hansgrohe remains a German company; three of the grandsons of company founder Klaus Grohe are executives with the company, with one the deputy chairman of Hansgrohe's Board of Directors. The company is still about one-third owned by the Grohe family, and the Board is nearly all Germans. The company is still headquartered in Germany, and has six of ten manufacturing plants in Germany. There is no sharing of employees, management, or production plants between Hansgrohe and Delta. I think calling it "just another brand" owned by "guys in green eyeshades" is truly a misrepresentation. Masco owns other plumbing companies like Newport Brass, cabinet companies like Kraftmaid, Behr paints, Ginger bath accessories -- probably close to 40 different companies in total. It's similar to Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway owning Benjamin Moore paints, Johns Mansville insulation, and Shaw floors (not to mention GEICO insurance, Fruit of the Loom underwear, Helzberg Diamonds, and a few dozen more companies). By the way, I have no connection to any of these companies beyond buying some of their products; I just wanted to respond to the comment above so readers don't come away thinking Hansgrohe is an old, high-quality name slapped on a now-mediocre product. -- Eric

Without looking up the installation instructions, one thing that jumps out at me is the way the membrane was installed. Do you see how the bottom sheets overlap the sheets above them? Best practice — and Schlüter I’d imagine (though I could be wrong) — says that it should be installed so that the upper sheets overlap the ones underneath. Have you checked the installation instructions of all the products versus how they were installed? While I do have a better than average knowledge/understanding of tile installation than the average Joe, I’m not an expert in all of the components that go into a tile job, especially subfloor deflection, tile and grout properties. And unless you can verify their credentials, they are very few posters on here whose diagnoses and corrective action advice are valid, so beware if/when people start spouting off “knowledge.” With that in mind, you’re most certainly going to get the best information straight from the manufacturers or from a certified tile pro. Good thing you took a lot of pictures! Btw, if you don’t already own it, I suggest purchasing a copy of this TCNA Handbook: Handbook for Ceramic, Glass, and Stone Tile Installation

Yow and all of your neighbors will talk about you from now on.:) They won't be coming to anymore barbecues at your house and they may even come home from the other direction to avoid the house with the odd colored shower drain.:)

Hey, you could abort Schluter and go to Noble Company and see what they have to offer. They have a similar type product (CIS). If worse comes to worst you might find the drain cover color you want at Dallas Specialities that would fit the Noble drain style.

Unfortunately the Schluter drain doesn't even come close to the ORB you are probably looking for.:) I've been looking for a long time and I have bought every color they offer to no avail.:)

Neighbors not coming over to eat barbecue? Maybe I should go with the drain that DOESN'T match. HA!

Seriously, I'm clueless here but would like an ORB drain. All I know is my tile guy is using a Schluter system and asked me to pick out a drain from their choices. I don't wanna! This Noble Compnay has an ORB drain...so that would work? Why do you have to have a special drain when using the Schluter system? What is CIS?

Thanks for the tip, Bud, and for any other answers to my questions. Lordy, I hope this will all be over soon.
