Show DeskTop

I have lost the "Show DeskTop" that I have had in my tool tray (the bar at the bottom of my desktop in XP). I frequently use it when I am running an application and need to access something on the desktop.

Can anyone point me at where (or how to find) it is located?

Can't remember how but if you hit the windows key (next to control key on the bottom) and the D key - it should take you to desktop

Jerry, See if this will get it back for you. It worked for me.

Restore Show Desktop Icon to Quick Launch on Taskbar
If the Show Error! Hyperlink reference not valid. icon is deleted from Quick Launch, the procedure below will recreate the file.
Open Notepad and enter the following text:

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop
Save the new file as Show Desktop.scf then drag and drop the icon on the Quick Launch bar or whatever location you want the shortcut to appear.

I have kept my Bolivian Rainbow about 4 inches below a 3' fluorescent tube, which is attached under an overhead cabinet over my desk. The light goes on with a timer, so the plant gets light also when I am not in the office. If you do not have any windows close by, get a fluorescent desk lamp, which you can put close to your plants. 6 feet is quite far from the light for peppers. You do not need any special grow lamp, normal fluorescent or energy savings lamp is OK. Do not use the regular incandescent bulbs; they do not have the right spectrum for plants. Anne, your husband and my husband will get along very well! :) My husband does the same thing. I have a spot right off the garage (a basket) for him to lay his keys and wallet and instead he walks right into the kitchen to lay it on my tiny island that is always cluttered! Those men! My office is out of the way, thankfully. I plan to increase the size to 1 foot bigger each way so it will be 6 1/2 feet by 6 1/2 feet. Kim, On the right of your task bar at the bottom you will see a small arrow going upward. Click on that. It shows the hidden icons, see if you can do anything from there. Thank you all for sharing your desks and ideas. I am going to research several options but now I know what I'm looking for. I would love to be able to sit at this desk and write a letter or two. This desk was a wedding gift to my gr-gr-grandmother and was brought by oxen cart from Nebraska to Iowa. I treasure it in every way so I will definately never paint it. Items like this, as well as mirrors, make me wonder about the person who used it and what their thoughts might have been. I'd love if others would like to continue to share their pictures but I feel I have some good ideas now as well as knowing some of the search words. Blotter, that's what I had forgotten. Also, thanks for the great links. I knew you'd all be able to help me out again.

Thanks. "scf" is unfamiliar to me, is it an executable extension? I created a file with the name and content you provided. It is now in my QLB, but clicking on it does not take the display to the DeskkTop

Thanks, I see the MS Site gives the same [shell] file set, and tells one has to create the file using Run->Notepad to create. I just used Word to create the file (not into writing "shell" so didn't do it right).

Thanks to all, I now have the ShowDeskTop in my QLB.

Must be a fairly popular snafu if microsoft has a page and an automated fix for it.

right click on a clear spot on the toolbar then click show the desktop.

right click on a clear spot on the taskbar choose properties, choose taskbar, click customize button see if you can locate it there to restore.

All, thanks, the MS fix worked.

I too was wondering how the icon "fell" off of the toolbar. But, I didn't want to ask.

I recall it disappeared once and was on the desktop, I did a click and drag to put it back. Seem to recall once it ended up in the waste basket, I restored. Then it became totally lost to me and I called for help here, and as usual I got excellent help, THANKS.

I'll try to remember to right-click the tool bar should I lose the icon again. I also saved a copy of it in my "download" folder.
