HMMMM....I guess I will never know. Craigslist purchase

So I am in the market for new dishwasher and I had narrowed it down to Asko and Miele (I have read ALL the forum post so this isn't a M vs. A situation) and I thought I would check to see if there were any posting on Craigslist. I came across a post for Miele La Perla II in Orange County for about $700 less than retail. So I called and come to find out it isn't in CA but in Nevada. So there was back and forth about how I was going to get the unit, because I was going to pick it up while I was in CA and bring it back to New Mexico. Its brand new, and in its original crate.

Then I was talking to a friend and they brought up warranty and if something goes wrong. It all seemed a little to complex because it wasn't a simple pick-up and go like I thought it was going to be.

In the meantime I found out that I will probably be bringing my Niece and Nephew back to New Mexico with me so I wouldn't have room anyway. But he was still trying to work out a way to get it back to New Mexico with me splitting the freight cost.

Feeling kinda bad I knew that the deal was getting too complicated for my comfort level I called to cancel the deal because it was going to require me picking it up from a third party who would be bringing it from NV to CA. I'm still trying to figure out why list the dishwasher in CA when it is in NV. I do feel bad because the guy has been really nice and he said that he blew off a deal so he could help me out, but it is still going to be a $1,700 cash purchase and I would rather just get a lower end Miele or Asko.

It wasn't until he seemed a little bit upset that I'm feeling that something may not have been right about the deal, but I could be wrong. I asked about the warranty and how long he had the dishwasher so I could figure out how much warranty (if any) would be left. He said that it wouldn't start until the day I installed it. It is a private party sale and that just didn't sound right.

I do feel bad though. You gotta go with gut instinct sometimes and $1,700 will still buy a whole lot of dishwasher...just not a La Perla II. I've bout several nice things from Craigslist, but only locally.

I think this was too difficult a deal from the beginning: even before the unusual travel to Orange Co. This was too risky since everyone in the deal is separated by three states on craigs list. I agree that the Nevada to Ca gives you an excuse to step away but I think you should be able to sympathize with the 'seller's' annoyance.

I hear you. But none of this would have been an issue if the seller lived where they said they did on the ad.

I should note that it isn't listed in Nevada at all. Who list something in one state when the item is in a completely different state? I buy things Phoenix, Tucson and CA when I can since they are more readily available and I'm from San Diego and I lived three years in the city where the dishwasher is listed. I made all that clear to the seller in an e-mail before he called me back.

The seller wasn't going to be the one delivering the item and I didn't feel safe giving the money to a third party in all of this.

But you are right I understand the seller's annoyance. I should have just said NO THANKS to begin with.

Lilypad, I can get a visual on it now, the fierce competition if those plants were offered for sale. And I would want to be right in the middle of it. My first exposure to a violet show was by happenstance. The Seattle AV club had a show at a local shopping mall. If the plant was for sale after the show, a colored dot was put on its card. I was apparently one of the few that asked about what the dot meant. Most of the plants were not spoken for, and I think I purchased 20-22, hard to remember. Average price was 5-6.00, and they couldn't be picked up til the show was over. Yeehaw! Barbara

Val, that's an awesome pic! I have that one. So the general consensus is that temps too cold can affect the color of (supposed to be) white or yellow blooms. That's fascinating. So one could take cuttings from a same plant, give them different conditions & end up with 2 diff flower colors? That's unusual. I can't think of any other plants, in or out, that do that (though some that vary due to PH issues come to mind.) And 'we' seem to agree some flowers just naturally have different colored buds from the inside of the flowers? So it looks like I've got a bunch of red & pink plants but no purple. That's cool, I like to have goals & now know what to seek when it's time for some trades in a few months. So who has one with purple flowers? What color are the buds - orange - LOL!? This one I got at WM a few weeks ago had a white flower on it, before this discussion so didn't realize it was potentially unusual. By the time I took its' pic, it was turning pink. By the time it shriveled, it was all very pink. Just checked, doesn't look like it's going to make new buds, the definitely white unopened ones in the pic all fell off.

Thank you so much for your kind and supportive words, everyone. It means so much to me. To address a few specific points: Moonkat99, the only time i feel embarrassed about all my naked spaces is when someone new comes by and asks if we've just moved in. :) Personally, i don't mind all the "blank canvass" areas because they give me something to aspire to. It's also kind of nice to have several places i can consider if i happen to find something i "must have." I just know you'll find the desk of your dreams eventually, or more to the point, the desk of your dreams will find you! Flyleft, those chairs are called the "Luxe" chairs from Hancock & Moore, and they're the new purchase that was saved for in 2007 & 2008. One of them has been returned because it arrived with a very noticeable defect on the arm. I'm sorry to say i've had to scratch and claw 'til my fingernails were bloody to get them to agree to replace the defective leather panel. Mind you, these two chairs were purchased this past June, and i've been jumping through hoop after hoop and negotiating excuses and delays ever since. Finally, i demanded they take both chairs back and issue a full refund. That seemed to do the trick. Hopefully, i'll get my properly repaired chair back within the next few weeks so that room can be enjoyed, albeit in it's current sparse state. Oceanna, you're absolutely right about the mockup, especially since i don't like to bring something home unless i know roughly where i'll put it and how it's likely to look. I fall easily in love with so many beautiful things, but as is the case with infatuations, falling in love with something (or someone!) doesn't mean you'll be able to live with it. Oofasis, what a wonderful list of treasures you've accumulated over time! Mine is not yet so impressive, but i intend to keep working on it. Thank you again, everyone, and happy bargain hunting!

When buying a Meile from other than a Miele dealer, BE SURE to call Miele and give them the serial # of the unit you are comtemplating.

Failure to do so, and you could end up with a DW without any warranty.

From a "Features" standpoint, I think you would be perfectly happy with the Optima, and (I believe)!!!
Antss, said it was the"Best Bang for the Buck".

Watch out for "Deals" on the latest Miele DW's (2011), according to another post on GW , one of the new ones got a rating of around 9 (On a scale of 0-100), so we need to find out if that was just a misprint or?????

Course we can "Bash" Consumer Reports, but wouldn't it be better to do some "Diggin" and find out what's really going on, ---- In the best interest of our Garden Webbers?

I'm not Anti Miele DW, I have a 2006 Optima for >5 years now and am happy with it, and it has been trouble Free.

I did see the ratings the Miele G2143SC[SS] scored the 14 and the Miele Optima G2472SCSF scored 9 both with poor for washing. The user reviews were mixed but there were only a few each. Owners of the G2472SCSF seemed to like it with a 4.3 out 5 rating (with three reviews)

But I also own a low rated vehicle that has been really good for me and have owned a second to highest rated vehicle that was a nightmare. So I only use consumer reports as a baseline.

I'm leaning Asko D5654XXLHS right now. I like the middle rack and my cafeware dishes fit and I like the 3 year parts and labor warranty. I was at a house that had three (two kitchen and upstairs gameroom) of the same Asko dishwashers and they were all up and running. But the Miele Dimension is still in the running.

designergrey, you reacted normally, in my opinion.
It is normal self-protective behavior to feel uneasy.

Nobody will ever know why that craigslist ad was placed and why it turned out that way. No point analyzing it further. (unless you want someone to chase it down right now and write about their hunch...)

chances are pretty darned good that if this was not a dealer you would not get a warranty. Period. That's the way Miele operates.

Without a receipt from a Miele authorized dealer you would be up smelly creek. Miele asks to see a receipt whenever they do warranty work. I do not think that the deal on Craigslist was enough of a savings to warrant taking the chance.
