Is MS security essentials enough?

We just got rid of Norton on the HP withVista. So far have only added MWBytes and was trying to decide on a free antivirus download. But checked out the link to security essentials and sounds like that would be enough. Is that right?

Oops, should have also asked about taking off AVG on my laptop if I download MSSE for that one also. Sounds like a good deal as it's also antivirus from the description on the MS site. Thank you for the prompt reply.

i think people that spend more money on the saw have to say they are awesome to justify it. i don't know about any of these other saws but my dad has a 311 with a 25" bar and i have a 270 with a 16" bar. have used both a lot. i cut enough wood to heat both mine and my dads house with the two. they are great saws use them all the time and always start always run great love the light weight and power of my 270 and now having owned it would never have spent the extra 120 or so that the 280 cost. and anyway why is everyone comparing the prices of the 270 and such to other saws? were are you getting your saws? i should have gone there because i payed almost msrp for my new 270. i know im poor and all but that is a pricey unit. 450 with tax.

Rita it updates whenever an update is created. My last update was 36 hours ago but as you seem concerned I did a manual check for an update and there was one there which would have installed automatically in the next few minutes. Remember, I have just woken my computer from snooze mode for a new day. You can turn the auto scan schedule off, not sure why you would want to after all the idea is to give you and automatic program leaving you one less thing to worry over. The only reason I know my scan is running is because I have a noisy hard drive, it simply runs in the background like so many other items you have installed.

Your link gives an error 404 message but I suspect it was meant to go here. Fred Langa, the author has been around giving solid advice from way back in the stone age it seems. Only you can decide on the benefits of expanding or changing your safety program. For myself I have had MSE since the day Microsoft released it and have been very comfortable with it. Just this week I felt the need to run an online scan and Malwarebytes but was advised I was 81 days out of date. I make this comment just to show I do not over use Malwarebytes yet my computer stays safe enough. As long as my MSE icon stays green I am comfortable. Of the tools mentioned in the article the only one I have never used is the MS Security Scanner.

Thanks, Zep and Raven. I had a hard time finding the free ZA download, but managed to avoid the other stuff in the end. Oh, yeah, and I can see that ZA is going to take some getting used to. Lots of things in Program Control that I don't know what to do about, though when I can find time to go through all the tutorials Raven gave a link to, I hope I will begin to understand. But meanwhile: (1) Will Firefox need to be "allowed" under "Server"? If I don't allow it, what might I miss out on? (2) Should I allow Sys32\svchost under both Access and Server? I have no idea what it was allowed previously, though presumably access was allowed. (3) Under Firewall>Advanced, I find "Disable Win Firewall," which I assume is good, now that I have ZA, but what is "Filter traffic over 1394"? No idea at all what 1394 is or what checking this box might do. Only these two boxes were already checked. I will leave them checked until I hear to the contrary by one of you. All help along this line is appreciated!

I installed Microsoft Security Essentials last September when it first came out as my only source of protection on a then new Windows 7 computer.

No problems at all, fully automatic updates, scans 2 a.m. each Sunday by default but the user can change the timeline.

Owbist "as my only source of protection"...do you mean anti virus and spy ware protections also or do you still have the other spy ware protection we talk about in here?

Vala55, yes it is the only protection I am using. It is an anti virus and anti malware combine. That along with the Windows 7 firewall

Now, this is not necessarily a recommendation for others to follow, it is just my way of seeing if the one program can/will do the job. It can and does. On my other machines I use Superantispyware, Malwarebytes, Spywareblaster and what ever anti virus I feel is the flavour of the day, currently Avast and Avira.

once you install MSE just check to make sure it is updating properly that is one of the complaints that have been seen in the forums reported.

I personally use malwarebytes on all my windows machines.
