Is MS security essentials enough?

We just got rid of Norton on the HP withVista. So far have only added MWBytes and was trying to decide on a free antivirus download. But checked out the link to security essentials and sounds like that would be enough. Is that right?

Yep.. its very good, light weight & its simple too.

Oops, should have also asked about taking off AVG on my laptop if I download MSSE for that one also. Sounds like a good deal as it's also antivirus from the description on the MS site. Thank you for the prompt reply.

Rita it updates whenever an update is created. My last update was 36 hours ago but as you seem concerned I did a manual check for an update and there was one there which would have installed automatically in the next few minutes. Remember, I have just woken my computer from snooze mode for a new day. You can turn the auto scan schedule off, not sure why you would want to after all the idea is to give you and automatic program leaving you one less thing to worry over. The only reason I know my scan is running is because I have a noisy hard drive, it simply runs in the background like so many other items you have installed.

Thanks, Zep and Raven. I had a hard time finding the free ZA download, but managed to avoid the other stuff in the end. Oh, yeah, and I can see that ZA is going to take some getting used to. Lots of things in Program Control that I don't know what to do about, though when I can find time to go through all the tutorials Raven gave a link to, I hope I will begin to understand. But meanwhile: (1) Will Firefox need to be "allowed" under "Server"? If I don't allow it, what might I miss out on? (2) Should I allow Sys32\svchost under both Access and Server? I have no idea what it was allowed previously, though presumably access was allowed. (3) Under Firewall>Advanced, I find "Disable Win Firewall," which I assume is good, now that I have ZA, but what is "Filter traffic over 1394"? No idea at all what 1394 is or what checking this box might do. Only these two boxes were already checked. I will leave them checked until I hear to the contrary by one of you. All help along this line is appreciated!

With the wealth of programs for internet security it is about the same as picking Ford, GM or Chrysler as a best vehicle. There are a number of long running anti virus and malware programs that stand up very well. Normally I tend to shy away from the new guy on the block. Note above that Jane_ny uses Live Onecare and seems very happy, I have used and worked on computers that use Windows Defender. This appears to be the best of both. The firewall should not be an issue, it has been used on all Vista models and there have been no big write ups about it being defective. Note too Mikie has been using this since beta and if my memory serves me he mentioned installing this back in the spring or early summer. Like Zep I installed it on my Windows 7 computer just today so I will see what it does for me.

Been using Microsoft Essentials for perhaps a month. This is a fully automatic program, no manual updating, no manual running. I did make one huge error though, I assumed it included an anti virus. It does not! I found that just recently so have been exposed for a little while (ouch!) This is on my Windows 7 computer and there is one issue I need to address for my own satisfaction. With Win 7 the computer goes into total suspended animation after a given number of minutes, nothing runs at all and for all intents and purposes the computer is off. However pressing the on button on the tower wakes it up in 3 seconds and off we go, brilliant. Except my Essentials is set to run at 2 a.m. so it does not happen. There seems to be a need to see how long a scan lasts then adjust the time before the 'Sleep' process kicks in. Maybe Mikie will see this and comment as he has Win 7 I believe. Currently I have just MS Essentials and Avast on here for protection and all is well

I installed Microsoft Security Essentials last September when it first came out as my only source of protection on a then new Windows 7 computer.

No problems at all, fully automatic updates, scans 2 a.m. each Sunday by default but the user can change the timeline.

Owbist "as my only source of protection"...do you mean anti virus and spy ware protections also or do you still have the other spy ware protection we talk about in here?

Vala55, yes it is the only protection I am using. It is an anti virus and anti malware combine. That along with the Windows 7 firewall

Now, this is not necessarily a recommendation for others to follow, it is just my way of seeing if the one program can/will do the job. It can and does. On my other machines I use Superantispyware, Malwarebytes, Spywareblaster and what ever anti virus I feel is the flavour of the day, currently Avast and Avira.

once you install MSE just check to make sure it is updating properly that is one of the complaints that have been seen in the forums reported.

I personally use malwarebytes on all my windows machines.
