How does she do that? And I mean without an argument.

Verizon phone service? Verizon FIOS? Verizon DSL?

They probably won't argue about it much as long as she is ready and willing to pay whatever amount they say she owes, including any early termination fee if she has made a long-term agreement of some sort.

You can bet that if she's in a contract, she will pay an early termination fee. Tell her to read her contract.

I'm NOT a computer guru, but I know that many websites can find out your city from your computer's ISP address (they are assigned geographically). I don't know how this could be done through email. However, websites gather a lot of information on you unless you take steps to prevent it. If you give any website your email address they can put it together with your city (from your ISP address). A lot of websites compile databases of these known valid email addresses and SELL them. If you also give them your name they may sell that along with your email and city, too. They may also sell anything else they can get about you - physical address, what products you look at and buy, and if you fill out those forms that ask your gender, age, income, etc., it will also be included. Building and selling extremely detailed databases on individuals is a huge industry. Each website has a privacy statement that is supposed to disclose exactly what information they collect and whether they sell it. (Of course, almost no one reads those.) Some websites are unethical and collect information without disclosure. Even ethical websites that don't sell user information can have their data stolen by hackers from the outside or by an employee looking to make some extra cash. Most consumer databases are legally used by advertisers, but cyber-criminals buy/steal them, too. So, most likely this spammer is using a program to spam everyone on a list - probably thousands of people. The spammers use personalization programs which generate form emails using the correct city for each email address. This accounts for statements that include the recipient's city, such as, "The mayor of Palm Beach gardens will cause you bodily harm if you don't respond within 48 hours." A computer security expert could tell us a lot of other ways that spammers, hackers, and criminals can get creepy amounts of information on us without our knowledge. The web is a scary place.

Yes -- the one member of the group who is consistently unreliable always just brushes it off."Oh well, ha ha." Another time we saved a seat for her at the movies, telling several people the seat was taken. She never showed up! I found out why later. Three of us qualify for senior citizen tkts.I bought them on line ahead. In order to buy one more ticket at the regular price I would have to go through the whole rigamarole (cc number, etc) a second time. I said please just buy your ticket when you arrive and we will save your seat. Well, she was miffed that I had not bought her ticket so she just didn't show up! She does have a problem with anger and depression. She was divorced long ago, never met anyone else despite trying and is sad that she has no children or grandchildren, as well as being stuck in a dead end (but well-paying) job. I feel bad for her but it wasn;t my fault and there isn't a darn thing I can do about it, so don't take it out on me!

Cynic, this is for you. Consumer Reports released its annual assessment of US wireless carriers and placed AT&T in last place for the third year in a row. In its latest report, the consumer product review company ranked AT&T at the bottom of the heap among the top seven wireless carriers in the US. The only bright spot for AT&T was its 4G network, which got decent ratings. Ironically, the top wireless carrier in the US was Consumer Cellular, an MVNO that runs on AT&TÃ¯Â¿Â½s network. This placement suggests that much AT&TÃ¯Â¿Â½s low ratings stem from poor customer service and a generally low perception of its service. ItÃ¯Â¿Â½s not due to the networkÃ¯Â¿Â½s poor performance. Verizon was the top national carrier and in the middle among all carriers. Sprint landed right in the middle with average scores across the board, while T-Mobile was ranked just above AT&T. When you say the $20/mo Verizon phone service, do you mean the stand-alone POTS wired service? (POTS means Plain Old Telephone Service, e.g. the copper wire). I have two experiences with this. A few years ago, at one home, I had Verizon POTS service. It worked fairly well, I even had DLS internet. But there were many maintenance problems so when Verizon installed FIOS (their fiber optics network) on my block, they offered that to me at no additional cost. BTW, this service did NOT include television. Recently, at my other home, I was looking for internet service and Verizon has a telephone cable running through my property. I asked if I could get internet through that and they said that it's POTS and wouldn't even support DSL. So I ended up with a cable triple-play package which includes telephone (which I don't use because I have cell service not). The main, practical difference between these "land lines" supplied by the cable companies is that they require power at your home to operate. The POTS service doesn't - you have a power outage and your phone still works (assuming the phone itself doesn't need power). An old-fashioned dial phone doesn't need any power. You may say that the VOIP phones have battery backup but that battery doesn't last very long.

Just found this post. Our son has to move and has 4 months left on his Verizon contract for Fios (Triple Play). He is moving to a new apartment which already has Comcast. Does anyone know if you still have to pay termination fee if you don't live at the place anymore?

I would think a call to Verizon would give you the correct info on what happens if you move before the contract is up. Verizon has tons of forums for everything on their site with other users helping. Maybe if you explain the situation Verizon would work with you. Mary

I don't know why people sign all of these contracts. I have dealt with two cable companies and ATT, and never had to sign a contract. I would not do business with any server who wanted a contract. My neighbor has a contract with dish and her tv reception has never been any good and she finally paid out of it and signed another contract with someone else.

Because if you want the triple play deal you have to sign for a year or what ever to get it for $99 or that's what is was at one time here in the adds all the time. I have time warner cable and internet, no contract needed and don't have a home phone and even if I did take their phone no contract to sign for their triple play deal. Mary

Cox bundles here, but still no contract as far as I know, it has a cheaper monthly rate when you bundle. I went back to a land line phone and lucked out with a 2 year promotion of $9 a month for their best phone service and no contract.
