I live in house that get very little light from the outside. The hallway would be dark if I didn't leave the bedroom doors open so that light could come through into the hallway.

I want to take down the doors that are there and replace them with french doors to give light into the hallway. I need some advice. Thanks in advance

What kind of advice are you looking for?

How about adding a light in the hall? That would be cheaper than replacing all the doors.

I don't know if I'd want a transparent door on my bedroom. Have you thought about installing a solar tube (google "tubular skylight")? It's basically a small, round skylight with reflectors in it to maximize the natural light coming in. They're not too expensive, and are supposed to be easy to install. That's what I'm doing in my dark hallway.

aargh, my response disappeared, lets's try this again. We did order the Door Saver II door stops. They work well, but my husband ran into two issues. The first is that you may not be able to adjust them the way you were hoping to. If you look at the picture I posted above, you can see how the top part fits on the bottom part. In order to do this, the zig zags have to line up. You may find that in one position the door still hits the wall, but when you move to the next position the door does not open as far as you hoped it would. This is mainly a problem if the wall next to the hinges is small and you find you cannot adjust it such that the door opens a full 90 degrees. The second problem has to do with the distance between the hinges and the door frame. You may find that the top piece will not slide over the bottom piece because it hits the door frame. My husband solved this problem by chiseling a piece out of the door frame. So, the product works, but I would suggest you first watch the video at their website so you understand how these work. You might also want to order just one and try it out in your situation before ordering a number of them.

I have three pairs of Normal height doors with this lite pattern on the back of my house. If you look at Marvin or somewhere where you can customize the lites, they may be able to do six on a taller door. Also look at Trustile. I did this pattern on the divided lite casements in my house. The large window has 4 or 5 lites, the smaller 3 or 4, (they aren't installed yet), to maintain the proportion. This is from Simpson Doors. It is exterior.

The casing looks like it was added at the end, at least from the pictures. Can you very gently lift it up at the bottom (insert a putty knife underneath it and slide it up about a foot or so) and see if it releases?

The house has a double ceiling (lowerer by previous owners).
Can I find this tubular skylight at Lowe's? I'm looking for something to add more light in the hallway. It's near time for me to retire and don't have a lot of money to invest in anything too expensive. I'll go to Lowe's website and see what they have. If you have further suggestions please let me know. Thanks so much for responding.

The double ceiling shouldn't be a problem, because you can easily adjust the length of the tube. I'm not sure if they have tubular skylights at Lowes, but they're only a couple hundred dollars on the Web - there are a wide variety of sizes and brands. In the end, it would probably be cheaper than buying several glass-paned doors.
